(Puyallup, WA)

In a battle of Vikings; Zack Robertson’s goal and three assists proved to be more than enough for Puyallup to upend Curtis 4-1.

Curtis came into the evening 6-4-1 overall and 3-3-1 in SPSL play. The Vikings from University Place won their last match on Tuesday with a 3-1 win against South Kitsap. Puyallup came into the night as the #1 RPI rated team in 4A. The top 4A team in the state, fell to the #4 team in 2A Columbia River last Saturday, but rebounded with a 4-1 win over GK.

The last five matches between the two teams were all decided by one goal. Each matchup last season lived up to the hype. Puyallup won both regular season counters with goals in stoppage time. Curran Caufield headed in the winning goal for Puyallup in the first regular season meeting. The second tilt saw Puyallup score two goals in the final 10 minutes to stun Curtis. However, Curtis got the last laugh in the playoffs. In the district semifinals, an eventual winning goal from Andrew George, sent Curtis to the district title.

With SPSL realignment taking effect this year, the only regular season matchup between the two foes would take place Thursday night from Sparks Stadium.

Puyallup got on it early when Zack Robertson set up Curran Caufield who stashed a loose rebound by Tanner Coleman to give Puyallup a 1-0 lead in the third minute. The combination of Robertson and Caufield connected again in the 23rd minute. Robertson’s cross off a corner found Caufield who tucked in his second goal of the game. The scoring on slot continued when Robertson fed Coleman Farmer on a return feed to put Puyallup up 3-0 in the 29th minutes. Puyallup led 3-0 at the half.

Ethan Bell scored off a volley in the 45th minute for Curtis, to seemingly give the visitors some life. But in the end, Zack Robertson headed in extra insurance in the 61st minute. Puyallup went on to defeat Curtis 4-1.

Zack Robertson’s involvement of all four goals won him Thorbeckes MVP honors with a goal and three assists. Peyton Lewis, who played the first half recorded the win for Puyallup. Alexis Cruz played the second half to close out the game for the home side.

Up Next: Puyallup returns to league play next Tuesday at Yelm at 7pm. At the same time, Curtis welcomes Graham Kapowsin in their home finale.
