Friday Night’s Scores

Tumwater 3, WF West 0

(Tumwater, WA) The WF West Bearcats came in with their minds on stretching their 1 game lead going into the 2nd half of the league schedule and they came out firing fast. The Cats offensive pressure led by Nano Jaimes and Uzi Lopez Cruz set up several on-frame shots at Tumwater keeper Davyn McGilvery. But McGilvery was ready with great support from his backline and denied all 6 shots with a particularly tough save in the 22nd minute.

The Bearcats dominated time of possession and shots for the first 25 or so minutes but failed to light up the scoreboard. That is always a dangerous proposition as the T-Birds began to figure out the defense and started claiming territory and time of possession back finishing the 1st half with 6 corner kicks all coming in the final 15 minutes of the 1st half.

The 4th corner was in the 33rd when Gavin Cuoio launched a high entry pass and a T-Bird got on it only to have WF West keeper Noel Montenegro punch it over the top of the crossbar setting up the 5th corner kick of the game.

Cuoio again launched it in front of the box and after a scramble Grady Harroun got his foot on it and punched it in for the 1st score in the 34th minute. That’s how the half would end a 1-0 T-Bird lead.

In the 2nd half the T-Birds changed their keeper from McGilvery to Harroun. The change made no difference as Harroun would finish the clean sheet match which meant the defender in the 1st half scored the 1st and winning goal and then protected that lead in the 2nd half. With this unique effort, Harroun was named our Thorbeckes MVP of the game.

Meantime, Harroun got plenty of support with Dylan Stevens adding an insurance goal in the 49th off an assist from Dylan Salupu. The T-Birds maintained the momentum they picked up late in the 1st half and never let up while the Bearcats could not find that early match spark they began with.

Tumwater closed out the scoring in stoppage time when Malachi Vuong ripped a deep shot with a laser into the back of the net with an eye-catching shot to end it 3-0.

With Aberdeen’s win over Centralia Tuesday night the top of the league standings find a 3-way tie with Tumwater and WF West all at 4-1 with the Bearcats beating Aberdeen, the Bobcats knocking off the T-Birds and Tumwater’s Friday night win. This sets up a thrilling 2nd half of the EVCO 2A league schedule with 5 matches left to play.

Tumwater travels to Shelton on Tuesday while WF West will host Aberdeen in a huge match to give one of those teams the early advantage over the other. Both matches kick-off at 7pm.
