(Renton, WA) The WIAA recently announced their winners of the 13th annual Smart Choices Scholarship awards. The top two awards are $5,000 scholarships each and the program is sponsored by the Washington Dairy Farmers and GESA Credit Union. Additionally, another eight runners-up receive a $1,000 scholarship.

“Each year, we continue to be inspired by the remarkable students who are recognized through the Smart Choices Scholarship,” said WIAA Executive Director Mick Hoffman. “This year’s recipients exemplify what it means to lead with integrity, resilience, and a heart for service—both in competition and in their communities. We are proud to support their continued success as they take the next step in their academic and personal journeys.”

The two winners of the top awards were Macy Osborn of West Valley (Spokane) High School and Rahwa Tesfamichael of Auburn High School. The eight indiv iduals who earned the $1,000 scholarships included:

Below are the top award winners and a brief summary of why they were selected as the top two winners. Followed by pictures of the eight $1,000 winners.

Macy Osborn, West Valley (Spokane)

From the court and the track to the classroom and beyond, Macy Osborn has left an enduring legacy at West Valley High School in Spokane. A three-sport athlete, Macy earned 10 varsity letters in volleyball, basketball, and track & field while maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA and completing 11 AP/Honors courses.

Macy’s leadership and grit helped guide her teams to league and District honors, multiple State appearances, and earned her numerous All-League distinctions. Off the court, her determination shone through as she self-taught AP Biology through independent study—waking up at 4 a.m. to balance school, sports, and service—earning both a top exam score and college credit.

A tireless leader, Macy has served in ASB, National Honor Society, but is most proud of her work through Hillyard Senior Center in Spokane. With over 300 hours of community service, she has built meaningful connections across generations. Macy plans to attend Tulane University to study Cell and Molecular Biology on a pre-medicine track, with goals of becoming a surgeon.

Rahwa Tesfamichael, Auburn

Since arriving in the U.S. from Ethiopia at age 11, Rahwa Tesfamichael has become a powerhouse of perseverance, leadership, and service at Auburn High School. A multi-sport athlete with six varsity letters in cross country, tennis, wrestling, and track & field, Rahwa has inspired teammates and coaches alike through her resilience and drive.

As a senior, she captained the cross country team and helped lead Auburn to its first Girls’ Wrestling NPSL 4A League Championship in school history—an especially proud moment in her first year in the sport. Known by teammates as a mentor and motivator, Rahwa has earned awards for her spirit and inspiration while advocating for greater inclusion in girls’ athletics.

A 3.97 GPA student, Rahwa has completed seven AP/Honors classes and served as a class treasurer, freshman mentor, and National Honor Society member. With over 250 hours of community service, she teaches language and culture at her church and volunteers across her community. Rahwa plans to pursue nursing and eventually become a nurse anesthetist, combining her compassion and strength to serve others in healthcare.
