(Seattle, WA)

A second period Seattle Kraken scoring barrage catapulted Seattle to a 6-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers. The win snaps a nine game losing streak against the Oilers. Jaden Schwartz shined amongst many Kraken stars, scoring a pair of goals nearly two minutes apart to set the tone, and three goals in the span of 1:51 in the second stanza put the outcome out of doubt.

The Kraken returned home to Climate Pledge Arena after losing the last three games of their four game road trip. Edmonton was playing on the second leg of a back to back losing the previous night against Dallas 4-3. Edmonton historically owned Seattle’s number. The Oilers won the last nine meetings against Seattle. The Kraken with an extra day of rest compared to Edmonton, open the door for a golden opportunity for a good night.

Seattle was without Chandler Stephenson who was missing his third straight game due to an injury. The same could be said for Edmonton’s two former League MVPs; Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, missing their last two games. Edmonton was also without defenseman Mattias Eckholm and the services of goaltender Stuart Skinner. The Oilers started former Seattle Thunderbird Calvin Pickard while the Kraken started Joey Daccord.

The first period saw both teams recording 12 shots on goal apiece, with none going in. The second period was a significantly different story.

Edmonton’s Mattias Janmark 39 seconds into the second period took a hooking penalty to put Seattle on the power play. On the man advantage, Jaden Schwartz tipped in an Andre Burakovsky shot at 1:18 of the period to give Seattle a 1-0 lead. The goal was Schwartz’s 22nd of the season. The 2019 Stanley Cup Champion with St. Louis was far from done. At 3:24, Schwartz capitalized off an Oilers turnover and scored his second goal of the game. For Jaden Schwartz the goals came 2:06 apart. Schwartz in three games against the Oilers scored four goals. Little did anyone know, the party was just getting started.

Rookie Jani Nyman tipped in an Adam Larsson blast to give the Kraken three goals in the period. The goal coming at 10:50, which was Nyman’s third goal of the season. 16 seconds later, Matty Beniers snapped a shot by Calvin Pickard to make it 4-0. Andre Burakovsky slipped in a fifth Kraken goal of the period at 12:41. Seattle responded after being goalless through one period, lighting the lamp five times to put Seattle in the driver’s seat. The five goals in the period were the third time the Kraken replicated such a feat.

In the third period, Oilvier Domingue replaced Calvin Pickard, who allowed six goals on 29 Kraken shots. Edmonton broke the ice when Zach Hyman scored 4:59 into the final stanza. Jared McCann volleyed a backhander out of midair at 9:53 to make it six goals on the night for Seattle.

Joey Daccord stopped 36 of 37 shots in the win. Daccord’s 24th win of the season. Seattle ended a nine game losing streak against the Oilers in resounding fashion. Edmonton goalies made 31 saves on 37 Seattle shots in the loss.

Jared Schwartz said after the game that the team played with great energy. Schwartz credited Joey and the fans of Seattle into making the night special.

The win for the Kraken mathematically keep them alive for the playoffs, but their elimination number dropped to two with a St. Louis Blues win in Nashville.
