Saturday, March 8 CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY!

State Championship Game

(1) Rainier Beach 68, (5) Edmonds-Woodway 48

After suffering a stunning loss in the Regionals the Rainier Beach Vikings were razor focused on defending the prec ious 1 seed from the get-go on Wednesday. The Viks bullied their way through 9 seed Eastside Catholic in a loser out game on Wednesday 82-45. Up next R-B nearly hit the century mark scoring an eye-popping 99 points dismissing Seattle Prep 99-75 in the quarters.

In the semifinals, the Vikings would see a very familiar foe in their Metro rival the Garfield Bulldogs. Beach would pull away from the Dogs winning in comfortable fashion 59-47 sending them to the State Title game against Edmonds-Woodway.

The Warriors from Edmonds-Woodway were very much under the radar and just tended to their business getting the job done each step of the way. The 5th seeded Warriors knocked #4 Bellevue in the Regional. In the quarterfinals E-W faced #6 Lincoln and dismantled the Abes 73-36 to cruise into Friday’s semifinal against 2 seed Mt Spokane. The Warriors defense locked down the Wildcats holding them to single digits in 3 of the 4 quarters and advanced to the Title game for the 1st time in school history.

Now the issue for the Warriors was two-fold could they slow down the high powered Vikings offense? and if not could they keep up? The answers were yes as the Vikings averaged 80 points a game through the first 3 games and they held them to 68.

The problem was the second question with the answer being no, they could not keep up with the Vikings offense. E-W put forth a valiant effort and they were in the game through 3 quarters but could never get that big run to challenge late. At the break Rainier Beach led 32-25.

The 3rd quarter saw the Vikings start to build that final cushion outscoring the Warriors 19-13 to a 51-38 lead. The 4th quarter was no different as the Vikings added to their lead on their way to their 10th State Championship.

Jaylen Petty kept up his torrid pace leading the Vikings with 26 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals and was our Thorbeckes MVP of the game. The Vkings also got 11 points each from Kaden Powers and Marques Ili-Meneese. Nyale Robinson had 9 along with 4 steals. The Vikings shot 50% from the floor and 30% from behind the 3-point line.

Rainier Beach finished the year 25-2 while picking up their 10th State Championship. The Vikings have now been to the State Tournament 28 times with 10 Championships, 6 runner-ups and a total of 24 trophies. Their State Tournament record is now 70-25 for a 74% win rate.

Edmonds-Woodway had only played 2 state tournament games in their history and broke through with this team winning their 1st ever trophy and had a shot to make it the big trophy. The Warriors were led in the title game by Cameron Hiatt with a double-double of 15 pointsd and 12 rebounds. William Alseth added 13 and 5. The Warriors shot 43% from the floor and from the 3-point line going 6-14.

E-W finished the year with a 26-3 record and took home the 2nd place trophy and 1st in program history.

The Garfield Bulldogs fresh off their disappointing loss to their rival Rainier Beach bounced back on Saturday with a solid effort using a big 20-5 1st quarter to propel them to the 3rd place trophy.

Mt Spokane came out sluggish after also falling short on Friday to Edmonds-Woodway and in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters Garfield outscored the Wildcats 47-46. It was the slow start that Mt Spokane could not recover from and ended up with the 5th place trophy as Garfield added the 3rd place trophy to their history, it was their 4th 3rd place finish.

(1) Rainier Beach 59, (3) Garfield 47

After the 1st quarter Rainier Beach coach Mike Bethea reminded his team about the Regional loss to Bellarmine and asked if they wanted to do that again or start playing hoops after Garfield ran off to a 20-10 1st quarter lead.

That was the reminder the Vikings needed as they dominated the 2nd quarter 21-4 and took a 31-24 lead. The Bulldogs Coach coountered at halftime challenging his squad and they came out in the 3rd battling hard and shaved 2 points off the deficit trailing by just 5 heading into the final 8 minutes.

Thursday, March 6 (Winner to Semifinals, Loser to Consolation)

(5) Edmonds-Woodway 73, (6) Lincoln 36

The Edmonds-Woodway Warriors continue to fly under the radar in this tournament and may be to the detriment of those who underestimate them. E-W rolled in this quarterfinal over the Lincoln Abes with consistent offense and a swarming defense.

The Warriors held the Abes to just 7 in the 2nd and 6 in the 3rd while building a commanding 55-23 lead through 3 quarters. E-W poured in 26 in the 3rd to blow open the game and cruised to the win.

The Warriors were led by a mammoth effort from Cameron Hiatt who pumped in 33 points while grabbing 14 rebounds for a double-double and had his own triple double by drawing 10 fouls from the Abes. This was clearly our Thorbeckes MVP of the game winner.

Chipping in for the Warriors was William Alseth with 15 as 7 Warriors would find the scoring column.

Lincoln just never got the offense rolling and only Trey Collier hit double figures with 11. Lincoln drops to 26-5 and hopes to rebound on Friday in a loser out consolation game against Bellarmine Prep at 12:15.

Edmonds-Woodway is now 26-2 and rolls into the semifinals on a hot streak and will take on Mt Spokane at 7:15.

(2) Mt Spokane 52, (8) Bellarmine Prep 48

Bellarmine Prep came into the tournament with a mighty big notch in their belt when they stunned top seeded Rainier Beach with a 59-57 win in regionals. So how hard would the 2 seed be? They were looking at pulling off the rare daily-double of beating the 1 seed and then defeating the 2 seed in back-to-back games.

The Lions nearly pulled it off leading 37-29 heading into the 4th quarter. B-P held the Wildcats to just 7 in tghe 2nd and 8 in the 3rd but couldn’t muster enough offense to blow open the game. This left the door open to an experienced and tough Mt Spokane team who have been a regular visitor to the Tacoma Dome under Coach Dave Wagenblast.

The Cats picked up their offense and tightened the defense to come from behind and deny Bellarmine their 2nd straight huge win. Mt Spokane outscored the Lions 17-9 and took advantage of getting to the free throw line hitting 21-28 for a 75% clip. Jaden Ghoreishi led the Cats with 19 and going 11-11 from the line. He double-doubled with 12 rebounds and was named our Thorbeckes MVP of the game.

(1) Rainier Beach 99, (7) Seattle Prep 75

174 points were scored in this crazy up and down scoring frenzy and the Rainier Beach Vikings still likely stinging from losing their regional game have put up two straight dominant wins. It’s hard to dominate a team that scores 75 in 32 minutes like Seattle Prep put up Thursday night but the Vikings are clearly focused.

The Panthers actually led after 1 19-17 but Beach kicked in their offense with 29 in the 2nd and led 46-34. Seattle Prep answered in the 3rd with 25 but still lost ground as R-B had 28 and then they just overwhelmed the 7 seed and Metro League partner with a 25-16 4th quarter run for the final massive score.
