Saturday, March 8 CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY!

State Championship Game

(2) Bellevue Christian 55, (4) King’s 37

By Sandy Ringer

Kiana Skogstad felt it.

So did coach Mark DeJonge.

This was going to be the year Bellevue Christian broke through for its first state girls basketball championship.

And they were right.

With a balanced offense and blistering defense, the second-seeded Vikings pulled away from No. 4 King’s in the fourth quarter to claim a 55-35 victory in the Class 1A state title game Saturday at the Yakima SunDome.

“It feels so good,” Skogstad said after delivering a game-high 15 points to earn the game MVP honor.

Especially after the disappointment of first round losses in the previous two seasons.

“We just kept the faith,” Skogstad said, noting that she and her coach thought this would be their breakthrough year.

It’s the program’s first trophy since 2019, when the team took fourth.

If this one looked easy, it wasn’t.

King’s (20-8), which upset top-seeded Lynden Christian in Friday’s semifinals, actually led 34-33 late in the third quarter on a basket by Eleanor Gaydos.

But Rocklyn Osborn scored inside to put the Vikings back in front and the dominated the final eight minutes, 20-3. King’s went without a field goal until Kaleo Anderson finally got a shot to drop with 31 seconds to play.

“We just ran out of gas today,” coach Dan Taylor said. “It took everything we had to beat LC yesterday.”

Anderson, a 6-foot junior, scored 13 points and was voted the tournament’s most valuable player.

“I’m really proud of how far we’ve come,” she said after the loss.

Skogstad and teammate Olivia Reynolds were both first-team selections.

Reynolds scored 11 points against King’s and Rocklyn Osborn added 11 more, plus 12 rebounds. Lili Meisner had 11.

Coach DeJonge was all smiles when he was asked about his team’s defense.

“We’re blessed to have a lot of length, and quickness,” he said. “We take a lot of pride at that end of the court.”

Consolation Games

8am  4th/6th Place Game
 (3) Zillah  64, (8) Naches Valley 53

Naches Valley had a comeback in mind.

Makenna Klitzke had other ideas.

The crafty sophomore scored 18 of her 26 points in the second half to make sure the Leopards went out with a victory. It’s their best finish since 1991, when they were third, and first trophy since 2018.

Klitzke collected 17 rebounds as well to earn the game MVP.

Zillah (23-5) scored 15 of their 31 first-half points off turnovers.

Naches Valley (22-8) used a late rally to get within seven, but ran out of time.

Bella Valadez helped the Leopards’ cause with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Angela Buck chipped in 10 points.

The Rangers made the most of their first state appearance since 2007, when they finished seventh. Senior Mandy Jewett closed out her career with another double-double (13 points, 11 boards) while notching four blocks and three steals. Fellow senior Denali St. Martin was next in line with 10 points.

11:15am  3rd/5th Place Game
(5) Annie Wright vs (1) Lynden Christian

One look at freshman Tyra Dykstra and you know Lynden Christian’s future is bright.

The freshman guard dazzled with four three-pointers in the first half to account for all 12 of her points and spark the Lyncs to a 29-15 halftime lead.

But it was senior Allison Shumate with her usual steady performance as she dropped in 14 points with and snatched four rebounds to garner the MVP award.

Junior Ella Fritz stepped up with 11 points and seven boards to help the cause as Lynden Christian bounced back from Friday’s semifinal loss to King’s.

The Lyncs (23-4) matched last year’s finish. They had came up short against Deer Park in the semis and rebounded to take third after taking second to Nooksack Valley in 2023.

Annie Wright (21-8), which fell to Bellevue Christian Friday, took home a trophy for only the second time in program history. The Gators placed fourth in 2020.

They had a freshman star of their own Saturday as Jasmine Andrisek showed off with 12 of her game-high 16 points in the second half. She made it a double-double with 11 rebounds.

Annie Wright loses just two seniors and expects to make another strong run next season.

Friday, March 7 Semifinal Friday

Consoltion Round (Loser Out)
(3) Zillah 61, (7) Cashmere 39

It took the Leopards awhile to wake up in the day’s 9 a.m. opener. But once they did, it was lights out for Cashmere.

Zillah (22-5) fell behind 13-6, then outscored the Bulldogs 25-7 in the second period to seize control. MVP Makenne Klitzke dropped in 33 points and just missed the double-double with nine rebounds. Bella Valadez was close as well with 17 points and nine boards.

The Leopards face an even earlier tip Saturday when they play No. 8 Naches Valley (22-7) at 8 a.m. to decide fourth and sixth places. It will be the program’s first trophy since placing sixth in 2018.

Cashmere, which shot just 14.8 percent from the field in the second half, finishes the season 18-10. Senior guard Allie McKenna finished her career in style with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Addie Talley just missed the double-double with eight points, 12 boards.

(8) Naches Valley 64, (6) Seton Catholic 59

Maddy Jewett refused to lose and the Rangers showed their resiliency as they rallied from 14 points down in the final quarter to earn one more game and a state trophy.

Jewett, a 5-10 senior, poured in 21 of her 34 points in the second half and delivered game-clinching three throws with nine seconds to play, giving her team a 64-59 lead. The game MVP also delivered 10 steals, nine rebounds and six assists.

Ellie Bost buried a pair of key three-pointers in the fourth quarter to help fuel the comeback, including one to give Naches Valley a 60-59 lead with 37.5 seconds to go. She finished with eight points along with Denali St. Martin.

The Rangers (22-7) will collect their first trophy since 2007 as they play No. 3 Zillah (22-5) Saturday at 8 a.m. in a game for fourth and sixth places.

Seton Catholic (19-8), which was up by 18 in the third, had seemed destined for the first trophy in program history. Junior Remy Jenniges led the effort with 21 points, including five three-pointers (three in the first quarter). The Cougars got 15 points from Riley Seymer and 14 from Madison Lee, two more juniors who help make the future bright. Hailey Hammerstrom was their lone senior starter.

Semifinals (Winner to Championship, Loser to 3rd place game)
(4) King’s 45, (1) Lynden Christian 44

Kaleo Anderson’s three-pointer at the buzzer ended a drama-filled semifinal and sent the Knights (20-7) to the championship game for the fourth time in five seasons.

They play No. 2 Bellevue Christian (24-2) Saturday at 3 p.m. in pursuit of their first title since 2020. King’s placed second in 2022 and ’23.

Danya Dykstra appeared destined for heroism after dropping in a three-pointer that put Lynden Christian up 44-42.

But Anderson had other ideas. She had 14 of her 20 points in the second half and added eight rebounds. Kaitlin Cramer chipped in a dozen points and three blocks.

Lynden Christian led 21-17 at halftime, despite a stagnant second quarter that saw both teams go scoreless for six minutes.

The Knights heated up in the third period to take a 36-31 advantage, but LC surged back.

The Lyncs (22-4), who had not lost to a 1A team this season got 10 points apiece from Allison Shumate and Elia Fritts and nine from Danya Dykstra. Shumate was saddled with three first-half fouls.

Lynden Christian lost to Annie Wright in last year’s semis and bounced back to take third. Those two teams clash again Saturday at 1:15 p.m. in a consolation game for third and fifth places.

The Lyncs swept back-to-back crowns in 2020 and ’22 (2021 was the COVID season) and was second to Nooksack Valley in 2023.

Thursday, March 6 (Winner to Semifinals, Loser to Consolation)

(4) King’s 78, (3) Zillah 68

Kaleo Anderson and Cat Ellard combined for 45 points and the Knights held off Zillah’s comeback bid in the final quarter.

King’s netted 11 of 20 three-pointers – including a key one by Anderson that helped dash the Leopards’ rally and cemented her MVP status. She pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds to go with her 25 points and rounded out the all-around effort with seven assists, three steals and three blocks.

Ellard had 20 points, while Eleanor Gaydos (11 points) and Molly Kyler (10) were factors as well.

The Knights (19-7) square off with No. 1 Lynden Christian (22-3) in Friday’s 3:45 p.m. semifinal.

Zillah, which plays No. 7 Cashmere Friday at 9 a.m. in a loser-out situation, was nearly perfect at the free-throw line (23-24), but it wasn’t enough. Makenna Klitzke backed 24 points with 12 boards, while Bella Valadez logged 22 points and Angelina Buck 13.

(1) Lynden Christian 45, (7) Cashmere 32

After pitching a 15-0 shutout in the second quarter to open up a 29-9 advantage, the Lyncs survived a ragged second half to book their spot in the semifinals for the seventh straight season (minus the 2021 COVID year).

LC lost to Deer Park at that stage in 2024 and wound up third, ending a strong of five title-game appearances. The Lyncs (22-3) tangle with No. 4 King’s (19-7) Friday at 3:45 p.m.

Senior Allison Shumate was the game MVP Thursday with 15 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Tyra Dykstra swished a trio of three-pointers (in six tries) to account for most of her 11 points.

Cashmere (18-9) got 16 points from senior Alie McKenna. The Bulldogs face elimination against No. 3 Zillah (21-5) Friday at 9 a.m.

(5) Annie Wright 48, (6) Seton Catholic

Camille Bates’ fourth triple of the game with 1:10 left helped pave the Gators’ way to the semifinals for the first time in school history.

Annie Wright (21-6) takes on No. 2 Bellevue Christian (23-2) Friday at 5:30 p.m. and is already assured of what will be only the program’s second trophy. The Gators, who are 0-3 against the Vikings this season, placed fourth in 2020.

Bates, a 5-4 freshman, finished with a game-high 19 points, despite having to go to the bench briefly with what appeared to be a leg or foot injury, and was tabbed MVP. Junior Aaliyeh Martin matched 10 points with 10 rebounds, while freshman Jasmine Andrisek yanked down 12 rebounds and scored six points.

The Gators, who beat Seton Catholic 42-40 in mid-December, have just two seniors on their young roster.

The Cougars (19-7) are loaded with underclassmen as well. Riley Seymer, a 6-1 junior, stood out Thursday with 16 points and 14 rebounds (10 offensive). Junior guard Madison Lee scored all 10 of her points in the first half, which ended with Annie Wright leading 30-22.

Seton Catholic, a first-time state qualifiers, had a 17-game win-streak snapped, but can stay in the trophy chase with a win over No. 8 Naches Valley Friday at 10:30 a.m.

(2) Bellevue Christian 45, (8) Naches Valley 25

Junior Lili Meissner connected on four three-pointers and tallied a game-high 20 points as the Vikings (23-2) won their 17th straight game and moved into the semifinals.

They face a familiar opponent – No. 5 Annie Wright (21-6) – Friday at 5:30 p.m., and are hungry for a possible first state crown. Bellevue Christian’s came close in 2006, but lost in the final to Colfax, which was in the midst of what wound up being four straight championships.

Meissner scored eight of her team’s 13 points in the second quarter, which ended with a 24-11 advantage.

Olivia Reynolds just missed a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.

Senior Maddy Jewett was the Rangers’ top scorer with nine points. Naches Valley (21-7), which shot just 17 percent from the field, is here for the first time since 2007 and goes up against No. 6 Seton Catholic (19-7) in a loser-out game Friday at 10:30 a.m.

Junior Caleb Greenland and senior Quinton Steen paced Lakewood with 19 and 17 points, respectively.

The River Rapids (20-5) play No. 5 Selah (20-4) Thursday at 9 a.m. Lakewood finishes the season 18-8.

10:30a  (7) Cashmere 35, (10) Montesano 28

Defense was the story, with Cashmere holding Montesano scoreless for the first 7:30 of the game, but led just 7-2. It was 19-6 at halftime, when senior Leah Kunz had 10 of her 12 points. Sophomore Addie Talley took the MVP tag with eight points, 15 rebounds and six assists.

Cashmere (18-8) now faces No. 1 Lynden Christian (21-3) Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Montesano, which saw sophomore Tieander Olson supply 16 points, finishes at 18-8).

(5) Annie Wright 71, (13) Lakeside 57

Junior guard Aaliyeh Martin combined 22 points, six rebounds and four assists to spark the Gators (20-6) and get the MVP nod. But she had plenty of help as freshman Jasmine Andrisek notched a double-double (13 points, 18 rebounds – plus four steals, two assists and two blockes) and senior J’Lyn Doodigan provided 16 points.

Next up is No. 6 Seton Catholic (19-6).

Lakeside (14-9) got strong efforts from Blakleigh White (15 points), Jillian Owen (15 points), Sienna Wienberger (eight points, 11 rebounds) and Bella Tobeck (five points, 10 rebounds).

(8) Naches Valley 41, (9) Nooksack Valley 37

There will be no three-peat for the Pioneers (17-9), who were longshots this season with a revamped roster that included only one senior.

Instead, Naches Valley (21-6) has a chance to make history in their first appearance since 2007, facing No. 2 Bellevue Christian (22-2) in Thursday’s quarterfinals at 2 p.m.

MVP Maddy Jewett did a little of everything (13 points, eight rebounds, three assists, five steals) and drew the fifth foul on Nooksack star Grace De Hoog with three minutes to play to limit the Pioneers’ chances.

De Hoog, a 6-1 junior, left with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Teammate Payton Bartl wound up with a game-high 16 points. The Rangers forced 24 turnovers.
