(St. Louis, MO)
The Seattle Kraken concluded a four game road trip with a 7-2 drubbing courtesy of the St. Louis Blues. The blowout loss darkens playoff aspirations for Seattle.
Seattle was concluding a four game road trip sandwiched in between the NHL’s Four Nations Break. Seattle went into the hiatus off a comeback overtime win over the Calgary Flames. The road trip continued in the Sunshine State with an upset road win of the defending Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers. After a third period unraveling against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Kraken set foot into the Gateway of the West with hopes of finishing the road trip well. Joey Daccord earned the start for Seattle, going up against Jordan Binnington.
The Blues got on the board first when Jordan Kyrou toe dragged by Jamie Oleksiak, snapping a shot past Joey Daccord at 8:04 of the first. Moments later 12:48, St. Louis used textbook passing from an attacking zone that ended with Oskar Sundqvst scoring from the slot to give the Blues a 2-0 lead. St. Louis outshot the Kraken 14-4 in the opening period.
Period number two did not get any better for the Kraken. Although they outshot St. Louis 9-0 to open the period, at the 5:10 mark, Robert Thomas tipped in a batted puck from midair past Joey Daccord. St. Louis led 3-0. St. Louis was at it again at the 8:23 when Zack Bolduc scored on his birthday to put the Blues up by four. Cam Fowler added another goal at 9:43 to make it 5-0. Jake Neighbors capped off a four goal second period by St. Louis with his 14th of the season at 11:55. The Blues led 6-0 into the intermission.
After giving up six goals in the first two periods, Head Coach Dan Bylsma made the decision to pull Joey Daccord for recent AHL call up Nikke Kokko. The rookie was welcomed into the NHL by Blues birthday boy Zack Bolduc, scoring 20 seconds into the period. The Blues led 7-0. Seattle broke the shutout bid by Joey Daccord with goals from former Blues Vince Dunn and Jaden Schwartz. In the end, the Kraken suffered a humiliating 7-2 defeat.
Defenseman Brandon Montour said postgame that St. Louis, “wanted it more” while Jared McCann called the performance “embarrassing”. The seven goals allowed are the second most the Kraken have allowed all season in a game.
Up Next: Seattle returns home on Saturday night against the Vancouver Canucks on Hockey Night in Canada, puck drop is scheduled a little after 7pm.
