Recaps
#14 Decatur Golden Gators 13/17/12/7 – 49
#2 White River Hornets 16/11/22/13 – 62
The Decatur Golden Gators came into the game on a 3-game win streak, and with 10 wins on the season. They’ve won 20% of their games in the District Tournament to secure a spot in the State Tournament. The White River Hornets came into the Semifinal with a 15-game win streak and the #3 team in the WIAA’s final RPI Ranking of the season. White River defeated Decatur twice in the regular season, but the stakes were at it’s greatest for the third matchup between the two sides.
The first half was a balanced one, as neither side took firm control of the game. White River was led by their sensational sophomore, Maggee Schmitz, who had 10 points in the first two quarters to lead White River. Decatur was led by Jayda Thomas, who had 10 points in the first half as Decatur held a 30-27 lead at the halftime break.
White River controlled the second half, as their defense stopped Decatur when they needed it most, and added a 22-point third quarter to take the lead and never gave it back. Maggee Schmitz and Vivian Kingston were spectacular on both ends of the floor for White River to help the Hornets pull away towards the end of the game. Decatur had a great performance from Iyanna Waltar, who had 15 points for the Golden Gators. White River would get the victory, 62-49 to advance to Saturday night’s District Championship Game.
Our Thorbeckes Game MVP went to Maggee Schmitz, as she was outstanding on both ends of the floor, led everyone in scoring with 26 points, and she made play after play for the Hornets to lead them to victory.
White River’s Vivian Kingston had 22 points and an all-around great night as well. Dakota Sprouse and Malia Froemke each had six points, and Gracie Banks had two points.
Decatur was led by Iyanna Waltar who had 15 points, Jeralynn Sevaaetasi had 14 points, Jayda Thomas had 13 points, JDynn Cox-Mika had five points, and Lela Milo had three points.
#5 River Ridge Hawks 6/13/20/12 – 51
#1 North Thurston Rams 16/23/25/25 – 89
In the second District Semifinal, the River Ridge Hawks and North Thurston Rams, both of the PSL-Nisqually division, battled to see who would play White River on Saturday. North Thurston won both games between the two sides in the regular season and was looking for their third straight appearance in the District Title Game while River Ridge was looking for their first win over North Thurston this season.
In the first half, North Thurston’s smothering defense set the tone in the opening quarter. The Rams held River Ridge to just six points in the first, while putting up 16 themselves, which would be the least amount of points they’d score in a quarter in the game. North Thurston had a 23-point second quarter, as Shayla Cordis had 13 points in the quarter, and Soraya Ogaldez had 10 first-half points. River Ridge was led by Brandi Stanford, who despite being in foul trouble, scored eight points for the Hawks to lead the way.
North Thurston scored 50 points in the second half, splitting the points right down the middle with 25 points in the third and fourth quarters. River Ridge had a fantastic third quarter offensively, with 20 points in the quarter but North Thurston’s energetic defense and persistent offense proved to be the difference as the Rams picked up an 89-51 win to advance to the District Championship Game against White River.
The Thorbeckes Game MVP went to Shayla Cordis, who had a scintillating 37 points, four threes, and also made large contributions defensively and was active rebounding for North Thurston.
North Thurston’s Grace Lee had 15 points, Sierra Cordis had 14 points, Soraya Ogaldez finished with 12 points, Patricia Hope Egrubay had five points, and Kaylin Henderson had one point.
River Ridge’s Brandi Stanford had 25 points points, 17 in the second half, Mya Armstrong had nine points, Makiah Wilbourn had eight points, Kailana Paresa had four points, Jayla Cavalier had three points and Jada Flynn had two points.
