(Kelso, WA) Things are a little bit different in the District 4 2B girls basketball tournament this year and that made Tuesday night’s semifinals even more important for the four teams involved. The district only gets four bids to the state tournament this season which is one less than they have received in year’s past. That meant half of the spots would already be taken after the two semifinal winners in Kelso locked down their spots in state. While the two losers of those games would not be out, they would be put in a win-or-go-home situation later this week.

Adna 49, Napavine 40

There was no better way to start the semifinals than with a rivalry matchup. The defending 2B state champion Napavine Tigers took the court with a chip on their shoulders against the majority favorite to win this year’s state title in the Adna Pirates. After the two teams battled in a defensive battle back on January 15th in which Adna won 32-29, both head coaches in Shane Schutz and Chris Bannish knew that this would be a different style of game with a spot at state on the line.

In the opening minutes of the 1st quarter, the tone was set by the Adna Pirates. They could not have made a better statement as Karsyn Freeman scored the first 12 points of the game as the fouls quickly piled up on the Napavine Tigers. Hannah Fay picked up two early fouls which turned into a huge defensive loss for the Tigers. Adna also played tremendous defense to slow down the Tigers leading scorer in Hayden Kaut. However, Napavine ended up getting some scoring from both Nicholle Valentine and Ava Ondong and finished the opening quarter on a 6-2 run. After a quarter of play, the Pirates still held a 14-6 lead.

Things started to balance out for Adna on the offensive end in the 2nd quarter. Danika Hallom and Gaby Guard each hit a three to make the Tigers have to defend all five Pirates instead of just focusing on Freeman. Taylen Evander would get her offensive game going for the Tigers as she scored six points in the 2nd quarter alone. However, those would be the only six points Napavine score in the quarter. Missed free throws started to pile up for Napavine as well as Adna remained perfect from the line. As the game went to halftime, it would be a 26-12 lead for Adna.

In the 3rd quarter, the Tigers began to make a move to try to get back into the game. With the Napavine defense back at full strength with Hannah Fay back on the floor, Adna struggled with some turnover problems allowing Napavine to fight back. Taylen Evander stepped up in a huge way on offense as the Tigers cut the deficit down to just nine points late in the 3rd. However, once again Adna had a response and this time it was Kendall Humphrey. She would bury a three to close out the 3rd quarter and push Adna’s lead back to 35-23 with just eight minutes left to play.

You couldn’t ask for a better game plan than what Adna had with a lead in the 4th quarter. They minimized possessions for both teams as McKenna Torrey did a tremendous job of slowing down the Adna offense and taking as much time off the clock as possible before Adna took a shot. Coupling that with the Pirates domination on the boards opened up the Adna lead. Napavine had one last charge as Hayden Kaut got her shots to start dropping but it was too late. Adna iced the game away as they locked up their spot in both the district championship and the state tournament as they took down Napavine 49-40.

Our Thorbeckes MVP of the game went to Karsyn Freeman who lit up the scoreboard with 24 points. The senior star would also tally 15 rebounds to earn her the double-double while going 8-8 from the free throw line as well. Even despite not being back to 100% quite yet, Karsyn Freeman continues to show why she is one of the best all-around players in the state.

Adna will now look to the district championship game on Saturday in Chehalis at 6pm but the Pirates know that they will have a couple more games as they have likely locked up a top seed in the 2B state tournament which means the Pirates will be headed to Spokane in a couple of weeks. It will be Adna’s first district championship appearance since 2023. Napavine will still have a shot at defending their crown as the Tigers will take on Onalaska in a winner-to-state, loser out game in Kelso on Thursday at 6pm.

Scoring

Napavine: Taylen Evander 17, Hayden Kaut 13, Jessie McCoy 5, Nicholle Valentine 3, Ava Ondong 2

Adna: Karsyn Freeman 24, Danika Hallom 7, Gaby Guard 6, Kendall Humphrey 5, Bailey Chapman 4, McKenna Torrey 3

Rainier 67, Raymond/South Bend 25

In the nightcap it would be the Pacific 2B vs. the Central 2B as the Raymond/South Bend Ravens would look to try to get back to the district championship for the first time since winning the title back in 2022 as they took on the Rainier Mountaineers who fell in the title game last season. RSB narrowly defeated Onalaska in the quarterfinals while Rainier had a comfortable win over Morton/White Pass to reach the semis.

Things went back and forth in the early portion of this one. Rainier got off to the strong start with Bryn Beckman leading the charge. However, RSB would be ready with a response after Kassie Koski dropped a deep three that got the Ravens going. Megan Kongbouakhay was all over the place for the Ravens as she made consistent plays to keep things close. However, the Mountaineers would still be leading after a quarter of play, 18-9.

Rainier would then take complete control of the game in the 2nd. Turnovers began to pile up for RSB and Rainier would make those turnovers count. The Mountaineers would score 20 points in the 2nd as Angelica Askey caught fire for Rainier and Janess Blackburn and Lexi Beckman got going in the paint as well for the Mountaineers. The offensive firepower of Rainier was just too much as they went on an 18-0 run to open up their lead to 38-15 at halftime.

Things continued to go Rainier’s way in the second half. Brooklynn Swenson joined the offensive outburst with a couple of threes while Askey and Bryn Beckman continued to light it up on offense for Rainier. Four different Mountaineers recorded double digit points as Beckman led the way with 19 while Askey added 18. Swenson and Blackburn had 12 and 10 respectively. Berklee Morley came off the bench and hit a couple of big threes for the Ravens but their offense just couldn’t keep up with Rainier. The Mountaineers would pull away in the second half secure the 67-25 win.

Our Thorbeckes MVP of the game went to Angelica Askey for Rainier who went on a wild scoring outburst for the Mountaineers. Askey also played strong defense for the Mountaineers to spark their big second quarter which led to the Rainier win.

For the second consecutive season, the Rainier Mountaineers reach the district championship game and for the fourth straight year, qualify for the state tournament. It will be a new opponent this year for Rainier as they take on Adna on Saturday at 6pm in Chehalis. Raymond/South Bend won’t have too much time to flush the loss as the Ravens will take on Mossyrock on Thursday at 7:30pm in Kelso in a winner-to-state, loser out matchup. You will be able to catch both games right here on ESN.

Scoring

Rainier: Bryn Beckman 19, Angelica Askey 18, Brooklynn Swenson 12, Janess Blackburn 10, Lexi Beckman 6, Kaysen Bravo 2
