Semifinals Monday, February 17 (Winners to State)

(Chehalis, WA) Bearcat Gymnasium in Chehalis would be the host for the District 4 2A girls semifinals to decide who would lock up a spot in the district title game as well as a spot in the state tournament. The losers of the two semifinals would move on to a win or go home game on Wednesday night in Ridgefield. A packed crowd made their way into the gym as an exciting night of basketball was about to unfold.

WF West 67, Woodland 25

First up, the defending district champions in the WF West Bearcats took their home floor to battle the Woodland Beavers. WF West took down Ridgefield in the quarterfinals while Woodland defeated Tumwater. The Bearcats and Beavers were meeting for the second time on the season as the two teams met back on December 2nd in both teams season openers where WF West earned the 63-31 win.

Things got off to a dream start for WF West as they stormed out of the gates. The trio of Julia Dalan, Dilyn Boeck, and Grace Simpson exploded on offense, leading the Bearcats to an 18-0 run out of the gates. Woodland could not get anything going on the offensive end due to the very aggressive Bearcat press. Finally, a three from Lainey Haden sparked the Beavers. Haden would hit another while Addi Christensen also knocked one down from behind the arc as the Beavers ended the quarter on an 11-1 run making it 19-11 Bearcats after a quarter.

In the 2nd, Julia Dalan took the game over. It wasn’t just the senior star’s offense that opened things up, but Dalan once again showed off her elite shot blocking skills as she was quickly up to five blocks before halftime. Kaitlyn Chloupek also knocked down a three for WF West while Amanda Bennett earned extra possessions with aggressive defense. Kennedy Bockert would get going a little bit for Woodland as she put up five points in the quarter but WF West took a 35-19 lead into halftime.

There wasn’t much offense for either side in the 3rd quarter as both defenses started locking things down. Bockert would score a couple more buckets but Dalan had to leave the floor with a bloody nose and that affected the Bearcat offense. Sophomore standouts Dilyn Boeck and Kaitlyn Chloupek did enough to keep the Bearcat lead in a good spot as they had the 44-24 advantage going into the final quarter.

With Dalan back in the game and Boeck catching fire, WF West began to run away with things in the final eight minutes. Not only were the Bearcats dominating on offense, but the defense was more impenetrable than Fort Knox. WF West only allowed six points in the second half and only one point in the 4th quarter. Dalan would finish with 30 points while Boeck added 21 as WF West rolled to a 67-25 win.

Our Thorbeckes MVP of the game was Julia Dalan for WF West. The Bearcat senior scored 30 and could have had quite a few more if she didn’t have to miss a chunk of the 3rd quarter. To go along with her scoring outburst, Dalan played lights out defense and dominated the boards making this decision a no-brainer.

With the win, WF West advances to the district championship game on Friday night in Kelso at 6pm and also clinch a spot in the state tournament. Woodland gets one last shot at earning a state bid as they will take on Mark Morris in Ridgefield on Wednesday night at 7:45pm.

Scoring

Woodland: Kennedy Bockert 9, Lainey Haden 6, Addi Christensen 3, Makynzie Guthrie 3, Liberty Christopherson 2, Emma Barrow 1, Carly Coltrin 1

WF West: Julia Dalan 30, Dilyn Boeck 21, Kaitlyn Chloupek 8, Grace Simpson 6, Rhylee Beebe 2

Boeck Seals Win With a Three

Columbia River 62, Black Hills 41

In the second semifinal matchup it would be the GSHL 2A champions in the Columbia River Rapids taking on the #2 seed from the EvCo in the Black Hills Wolves. Both teams knew that they would take on WF West with a win and that added some motivation for both teams. For Columbia River, they would want some revenge after falling to the Bearcats in the district championship last year. For the Wolves, they were looking for a third crack at WF West and hoped to earn their first state bid since 2020.

Defense stole the show in the opening eight minutes as neither side could get comfortable on offense. Natalie Buchanan would hit three free throws in the 1st quarter while Tyler Venable earned the only Black Hills field goal of the 1st. Gracie Glavin would get Columbia River going but the Rapids never looked like they found their groove in the 1st either. After just one quarter of play, it would be an 8-5 lead for Columbia River.

It was like someone flipped a switch for Columbia River in the 2nd as they all of a sudden found their groove. Everyone got involved for the Rapids as the offense exploded to life. A three from Peyton Dukes might have been the catalyst for the Rapids and everyone else was dialed in from their. Nine different Rapids would score in the first half as they opened up their lead. However, Tyler Venable would hit a late three plus she would bank in a halfcourt buzzer beater to give the Wolves some momentum going into halftime. However, Columbia River still led 29-13 thanks to a 21-point quarter.

Whatever coach Herb Guscott told his team in the locker room seemed to work. The Wolves came out firing as they cut into their deficit thanks to a balanced team effort. Tyler Venable would be the leader in the charge but everyone got involved. Ellie Johnson and Cassidy O’Reilly would be fantastic on the boards while Buchanan, Venable, and McMahon all hit some big shots. Even after Ellie Johnson got in foul trouble, Megan Dolby came in and played great minutes. Columbia River would do a good job to answer themselves but saw their lead cut to 48-35 heading into the 4th.

Momentum continue to belong to the Wolves as they trimmed the deficit down to ten in the final quarter. That would be as close as they got. Marley Myers did a phenomenal job of calming down the Rapids and settled the offense back down. Mikayla Kings, Peyton Dukes, and Marley Myers all hit huge threes in the final quarter while Avi Desjarlais dominated the glass. Columbia River would end up pulling away to get the 62-41 win.

Our Thorbeckes MVP of the game was Marley Myers for Columbia River. Myers was the calming force during the Wolves comeback bid and she settled everyone down. With a ton of pressure and things mounting against Columbia River, Myers was able to refocus her team while also hitting a crucial three to lift the Rapids down the stretch.

The win sends Columbia River to the state tournament for the third consecutive season and puts the Rapids in their second consecutive district championship game on Friday in Kelso at 6pm. Black Hills will travel to Ridgefield to take on the Spudders on Wednesday at 6pm in a winner-to-state, loser-out game.

Scoring

Black Hills: Tyler Venable 18, Natalie Buchanan 11, Kiley McMahon 4, Ellie Johnson 4, Cassidy O’Reilly 2, Megan Dolby 2

Columbia River: Gracie Glavin 11, Marley Myers 10, Mikayla King 10, Peyton Dukes 10, Avi Desjarlais 7, Camy Drake 6, Braidee Goodwin 4, Charmayne Castro 3, Olivia Carroll 1

Ridgefield 57, Tumwater 50

This game was a tale of 2 halves as the Ridgefield Spudders got off to a fast start pushing their 1st half lead to as many as 17 up 31-14. Ridgefield was led in the 1st quarter by Madison Ingham’s 10 points to put them up by 7.

Tumwater looked like they were going to toss in the towel early as nothing was falling for the T-Birds and they fell behind big. Then in the final minutes of the half, senior Sydney Sumrok heated up scoring 10 and closing the gap to a 9 point difference trailing 31-22 at the break.

Sumrok never cooled off and early in the 4th quarter would take their 1st lead over Ridgefield completely wiping out the large early deficit. All the momentum was on Tumwater’s side especially Sumrok who scored another 10 in the 3rd quarter and finsihed with 27 points to lead all scorers. Sumrok hit four 3’s and continually drove the lane to find openings to drop buckets and it appeared the T-Birds were going to complete the comeback.

Except there was another equally stubborn player on the Spudders side in Sava Chanda a junior who hardly played in the 1st half after picking up a 2nd foul early in the 1st quarter. Chanda had 9 points heading into the final 8 minutes when she exploded for 13 hitting three big 3-balls and the Spudders came roaring back. Sophomore Josie Hicks hit the 1st bucket of the game a 3 and she hit 2 more 3’s including a back-to-back with Chanda to extend their lead quickly to 6 late in the game.

Ridgefield would not let Tumwater even get back to a 1 possession game and held on for the win. Ridgefield advances to another consolation game on Wednesday with a chance to go to State when they face Black Hills at Ridgefield at 6pm. Winner to state, loser out.

Sava Chanda’s effort earned her our Thorbeckes MVP award in an easy choice. She finished with 22 points and led her team in rebounds with 7. Had Tumwater pulled off the comeback the choice was easy on that side as well with Sumrok. Sumrok had 27 and no other T-Bird had more than 5. Tumwater’s season has come to an end.

Scoring
Ridgefield: Sava Chanda 22, Madison Ingham 13, Josie Hicks 11, Abigial Vance 4, Allie Doman 4, Nora Martin 3
Tumwater: Sydney Sumrok 27, Anden Demaris 5, Reece Brewer 5, Raygen Cooper 5, Kamryn Wilson 4, Dakota Cahill 4

Black Hills 51, Mark Morris 34

(Tumwater, WA) The Mark Morris Monarchs would score first in each quarter but could never retain that momentum. The Black Hills Wolves would pick up momentum in each quarter and lead 17-9 after 1 and 26-19 at the break. Tyler Venable led the Wolves attack with 13 in the 1st half.

The big swing was in the 3rd where the Wolves scored 15 including a pair of big 3 balls from Kiley McMahon and Natalie Buchanan, the  only 3 pointers in the game for Black Hills. The Wolf defense also limited the Monarchs tgo just 5 points and took a 41-24 lead into the final 8 minutes and it was simply too big of a hole to dig out of.

M-M didn’t help their cause as they just couldn’t get shots to fall either in close or from behind the arc. Paisley Fraidenburg did lead the Monarchs with 10 points off the bench. The Monarchs also had a tough time at the free throw line going just 2-13. The Wolves tpook full advantage at the charity stripe going 17-21.

With the win the Wolves move onto the district semifinals and will face the winner of the Washougal at Columbia River which was moved to Saturday on Monday at WF West. Mark Morris takes on the loser of the Panthers vs the Rapids on Monday at a location TBD.

Our Thorbeckes MVP went to the Wolves Tyler Venable who led all scorers with 20 points. Also considered was Nat Buchanan who finished with 14 points and 6 rebounds and Ellie Johnson with 8 points while grabbing 15 rebounds.

Tumwater 54, RA Long 32

(Tumwater, WA) The T-birds came out red hot in this one outscoring the Lumberjills 24-2 in the 1st quarter. The offense was led by Cadynce Lee off the bench where she sunk 3 from behind the arc in the 1st quarter including one just before the buzzer. Lee went on to score 23 points to lead all scorers.

Tumwater’s hot shooting from the outside was not limited to Lee as they reigned down 9 long balls including 5 in the 1st quarter. The T-Birds big lead was too much for RA Long to dig out from and they advanced to the District tournament. The overeall offense was well spread out with 8 players getting in the scorebook.

The Lumberjills did bounce back and played Tumwater to a 30-30 tie for the final 3 quarters. Alauna Brown would find her range and put in 13 with Briana Garwood also hitting double figures with 10.

Our Thorbeckes MVP was clear as Cadynce Lee ran away with the honor. Tumwater advances to the opening round of districts at Woodland on Friday night at 6pm. RA Long had their season come to an end.

Scoring
Tumwater: Cadynce Lee 23, Sydney Sumrok 7, Raygen Cooper 6, Dakota Cahill 5, Clair Buono 4, Kamryn Wilson 4, Anden Demaris 3, Measyn Williams 2
