(Kelso, WA) Kelso was once again the center of the universe for District 4 2B basketball on Wednesday night but this time it was the boys turn to take the floor. In the semifinals of the district tournament, two teams would lock in their spot in the state tournament while two teams would drop down into the consolation bracket and be one loss away from their season coming to an end. However, none of the four schools were thinking about Friday or Saturday as all the focus was on semifinal Wednesday,
Toledo 55, Napavine 42
In the first semifinal of the night, the defending district champions, the Napavine Tigers, looked to defend their crown. To get back to the title game, they would have to knock off the Toledo Riverhawks for the third time this season. After just narrowly missing state last season, the now healthy Riverhawks were looking to send a message that they could hang with anyone in the state despite being very young.
After Hudson Chambers knocked down the first bucket of the game from behind the arc, Napavine went cold right after. Toledo’s defense gave the Tigers all sorts of problems as the Riverhawks slowly found their footing on offense. Toledo attacked the paint relentlessly and dominated the boards to limit Napavine’s second chance opportunities. While Toledo wasn’t getting the three ball to drop yet, they made the adjustments to take a 14-5 lead after a quarter of play.
In the 2nd, things began to really go Toledo’s way as they found their groove. A monstrous dunk by junior Cooper Fallon fired up everybody on the Toledo side of the court and his immediate block on the other end just fueled the flames. All of a sudden Toledo could not miss and Napavine’s offense couldn’t get a shot off as the Riverhawks forced turnover after turnover. Despite some foul trouble for Toledo’s Eli Weeks, the offense continued to pick up steam behind great bench minutes from the returning Trevin Gale. Not a single Tiger made multiple field goals in the first half while four Riverhawks did. At halftime, Toledo held a 29-15 lead.
Of course Napavine was not going to go down without a fight. Cal Bullock and Beckett Landram began to get going on offense in the 3rd, but so did Adam Kruger for Toledo. Both teams dealt with foul trouble as Eli Weeks and Jack Nelson each picked up their fourth in the quarter. Turnovers just continued to plague the Tigers and Toledo continued to build momentum to answer every Napavine run. With just one quarter to go, Toledo held a 43-26 advantage.
It was only a matter of time before Karsen Denault picked things up for Napavine. The senior star saw a three finally dropped and that gave the Tigers their best offensive quarter of the game. However, Jack Nelson would foul out and that gave Toledo a big advantage on the boards with Cooper Fallon. Napavine’s free throw shooting did not help as they went 8-15 from the line while Toledo went 12-21 from the line. Tyce Vigre would ice things away as he hit three big free throws down the stretch to lift Toledo to the 55-42 upset victory.
Our Thorbeckes MVP of the game went to Tyce Vigre for Toledo. Vigre had a game-high 16 points with eight coming in each half. He would also go 3-4 from the line while playing strong defense and didn’t force any shots in what was a balanced, team win.
With the win, Toledo locks up their first state berth since 2019 and also advances to their first district title game since that same year. They will play Adna in Chehalis on Saturday at 8pm. Napavine will look to bounce back quickly in a winner-to-state, loser out game on Friday at 6pm in Chehalis when they battle Forks.
Scoring
Toledo: Tyce Vigre 16, Adam Kruger 11, Trevin Gale 10, Eli Weeks 7, Cooper Fallon 7, Conner Hill 4
Napavine: Beckett Landram 13, Karsen Denault 11, Cal Bullock 7, Jack Nelson 6, Hudson Chambers 5

Adna 67, Rainier 47
In game #2 of the night the Rainier Mountaineers and Adna Pirates met on the same floor for the third time this season. After dropping the first two games to the Pirates, Rainier would hope that like Toledo the third time would be the charm to take down their league rivals.
Rainier began the game with a couple of threes as both Josh and James Meldrum got off to a hot start. It didn’t take too long for Grayson Humphrey to jumpstart the Adna offense with a three of his own for the hot shooting Pirates. Other guys would then get involved for both teams to open up the game as Peyton Sheaffer joined the offensive attack for Rainier while Trevin Salme got going for Adna. After the first quarter of play, Adna would hold a slight 16-14 lead.
That would be win Trevin Salme would start to take the game over for Adna. Salme started to hit three after three after three at a pace no team could keep up with. Adna dominated the boards as well as Rainier cooled just a bit on the offensive end. Peyton Sheaffer would put together a nice 2nd quarter for Rainier but the Salme-Humphrey duo was too much to keep up with. Adna would hold a 34-25 lead at the midway point of this semifinal.
In the 3rd quarter the game would really end up being decided. Trevin Salme did not cool down one bit but Jackson Knittle would heat up for Adna. The big Adna post would tally nine points in the 3rd quarter alone while Salme continued to light it up. While it was a dream quarter for those two, it was a nightmare for Rainier. The Mountaineers mustered just four points in the 3rd while Adna put up 20 themselves. The 16-point edge in the 3rd alone blew things open as Adna extended their lead to 54-29.
Their would be no comeback for the Mountaineers in this one. Adna continued to pour it on courtesy of Salme. The duo of Gavan Muller and Beau Miller continued to pick up the rebounds for the Pirates. Peyton Sheaffer would once again have a very nice quarter but it was too little, too late for the Mountaineers. Both coaches emptied their benches late before the final buzzer. When the dust settled, it was Adna picking up the impressive 67-47 victory.
Our Thorbeckes MVP of the game was Trevin Salme for Adna. Despite our producer getting his math wrong, Salme dropped 30 for the Pirates, including five threes and a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. He would be lights out in the final three quarters for the Pirates and could be relied upon on every possession to get points down the stretch.
Adna reaches the district championship for the second consecutive season and clinch their own state tournament berth. The Pirates will hope for a better result in Chehalis this year when they battle Toledo at 8pm on Saturday night. Rainier will attempt to make it to the state tournament in a winner-to-state, loser out game in Chehalis at 7:30pm on Friday against Onalaska.
Scoring
Adna: Trevin Salme 30, Grayson Humphrey 14, Jackson Knittle 13, Gavan Muller 6, Beau Miller 2, Treven Willis 2
Rainier: Peyton Sheaffer 18, James Meldrum 12, Josh Meldrum 10, Hunter Howell 5, Kaden Goodman 2
