(Tukwila, WA) The 4A State girls Championships were rolled off this past weekend at Bowlero lanes in Tukwila. 4A Tournament

Individual competition goes down to the final game

The 4A individual competition was made even more difficult with the addition of last year’s 3A State Champion and 3A’s 3rd place finisher. No they did not transfer schools but last year’s 3A Champ Tamia Yeager from Spanaway Lake and Bonney Lake’s Jayden Thayer both moved up to 4A because their schools were re-classified from 3A to 4A.

In the opening game there were many chances with 9 200+ games bowled in the 4A competition. Chelsea Ravenell of Emerald Ridge led after the 1st game with a 226. Teagyn McMillen from Puyallup was right behind with a 225 and Bellingham’s Diva Marsh had a 222. Yeager and Thayer were in the mix with a 205 and a 204 respectively.

Thayer then fired a 225 to take the lead while Yeager tossed a 201 and March fell off with a 176. Emerald Ridge’s Mariah Brown fired her 2nd 200 as well and followed up her 205 with a 220. So after 2 games Thayer led with a 429, Brown was 2nd at 425, Yeager was 406 and Marsh dropped to 4th at 398.

Thayer, Marsh and Brown all slowed up with a 176, 178 and 161 while Yeager tossed her 3rd 200 in a row with a 226 to take the lead with a 3 game series of 632. Thayer was 2nd at 605, Brown 3rd with a 586, Marsh 4th with a 576 and Ravenell just behind at 574 as they went into the lunch break.

In game 4, right after the break Marsh blew out the 2nd highest game of all 3 tournaments with a 245, just a pin behind Samyia Gildon’s 246 who was the 3A Individual Champion from Thomas Jefferson.  Thayer also answered with her 3rd 200 game a 213 while Yeager just missed with a 195. It was at this time those 3 separated themselves from the rest of the pack and it was a 3 horse race.

All 3 would miss the 200 mark in the 5th game with Thayer putting up a 192, Marsh a 180 and Yeager a 181. Only 9 pins would separate the 3 going into the final game with Thayer leading with a total of 1010. Yeager was right behind at 1008 and Marsh at 1001. The teams only had 5 bowlers on each lane while the individuals had 6. So Yeager finished first and did not bowl the game she wanted with her second lowest total of 185 for an 1193 6 game total.

Both Thayer and Marsh could easily know what their target was and were bowling next to each other as well as they came down to the finish. Marsh who was the one that was more up and down than the other 2 was up again and fired a 208 to top 1200 at 1209 to for a series average of 604.5 and a game average of 201.5.

However, Thayer a sophomore dug in deep and knocked down 222 to win going away with a 1232 total. Her 1st 3 game series was 605 and she came back to blast a 627 for the win. Thayer averaged 205.3 for the day. Thayer and Marsh were the only ones to average a 200+ game for all 3 tournaments.

Yeager, a senior, averaged 199 but was well below what she rolled last year when she knocked down 1256 which would have won this year’s tournament but settled for 3rd place.

Big props for 4th place finisher Ravenna Foley of Mount Rainier who rolled a total of 1108 but was so consistent. She had 2 200’s a 206 and 209 in the 3rd and 4th games but then never lower than a 163 up to a 182. Brianna Hust of Skyview took 5th with an 1100 series. The Storm has 2 others in the top 12 who medaled in the individual competition with Kaydree Rowland taking 7th and Addysen Case 10th. Case began the day with a 149 and a 141 and then heated up finishing with a 208 and 201.

McMillen ended up 6th, Emm Johnson of Battle Ground 8th, Ravenell 9th, Jillian Castle of Eastmont 11th and the final medal went to Eisenhower’s Naikeeley Tabayoyon.

Skyview Storm’s to a State Team Championship

Consistency is what wins bowling tournaments more than the one off big games. Skyview didn’t have anyone battling for the individual title but they had 3 bowlers who medaled finishing in the top 12 while one finished 24th and the other 40th out of 93 entries. This consistency won the Storm their 2nd State Championship in school history after winning it all in the 2022-23 season.

Skyview getting their Big Trophy

After day 1 and the individual awards were handed out the Storm had a handy lead over last year’s defending Champs Kamiakin with a 5205 to 5049 margin. The 5 that bowled on Friday included seniors Addysen Case, Kaydree Rowland and Avery Henderson along with junior Abby Pine and sophomore Brianna Hust. Hust led the team on day 1 with an 1100 6 game series taking 5th in the individual awards.

Kamiakin’s Alyssa Martinez was their top individual placer taking 15th. The other 4 were Grace Lynn Hubbert, Samantha Martinez, Clara Demarest and Lilliana Martinez. As a group they battled well to defend their title with all 5 finishing between 15th and 32nd place.

As the Baker games began the Braves knew they would have to pick up pins on Skyview every game to make a run at the Storm. After 2 games they had gained just 4 pins and needed a big swing for a shot. Instead Skyview sealed it in the 3rd game when they rolled a 181 and Kamiakin got racked with several splits and ended with a 130 losing 51 pins and it was over.

The Braves were well in front of the race for 3rd place as Emerald Ridge would hold Eastmont at bay and collect their 1st ever 3rd place trophy. The Jaguars have 4 State Championships and 2 runner-ups and now a 3rd and a 4th place finish.

Only 4 teams take home a trophy and so there was also a bit of a race for 4th place with Spanaway Lake getting right into the race with the highest Baker score in all 3 tournaments of a 235 in game 1. The Sentinels made a lot of headway with a 156, 165, 184 and another 200 at 207 to look like they were going to get into the top 4. But then they hit wall with 5 games 151 and below and 3 in the 130’s and would settle for 5th.

Eastmont was sitting in 3rd place after day 1 with a 5010 pin count, Emerald Ridge was 4th at 4939 and Spanaway Lake 4758. In the end only the Jaguars were able to change their position moving from 4th to 3rd.
