2A Tournament

Individual competition is a Hudson’s Bay dual as teammates battle for top spot

The battle for the 2A/1A State Individual Chmpionship was a repeat from last year but just different teams but not different leagues. Last year RA Long’s Lily Mattison defeated her teammate Ava Rodman by just 2 pins in the final frame of the day. The Lumberjills swept the top 2 places and led to an easy team win as well.

The Hudson’s Bay Eagles paid full attention to that bluepeint and figured why not follow a winning plan. The Eagles would sweep the top 2 places in the individual competition which positioned them perfectly for their 1st team Title. Both teams come from the Greater St Helens League.

MJ Westmorland took the lead blowing out a 621 series for the 1st 3 games. Sanaa Tyler was within striking distance at 589 and powered that with a 245 in her 3rd game. But Westmorland would be off her mark in the 4th game and 1st after the lunch break with a 136. Tyler took full advantage with a solid 189 gaining 53 pins.

In the 5th game Westmorland bounced back with a 203 while Tyler had another solid 182. When you added the 5 games up for each player they both arrived at 960, a dead even tie with 1 game to go. Tyler had the more consistent run with all her games between 169 and 189 including her final game of 185. The big move of course was that 245 in her 3rd game.

Westmorland came into the final game topping 200 3 times with the 234, 211 and 203. But she also dropped a 136. In the end she would be close but unable to top her teammate finishing with a 176 to come up 9 pins short and claiming 2nd place.

The pair were well clear of the rest of the field and Burlington-Edison’s Kelisa Beck finished strong with a 209 to sweep into 3rd place. RA Long would finish back-to-back again this year but in 4th and 5th with Hailey Wright taking 4th and Jade Walters 5th just 1 pin separating the 2, 1041 to 1040. Just another single pin back was Madalynn Haite of Orting with 1039 to claim 6th place.

The top 6 were well in front of the other 6 medalists but Hudson’s Bay would get a 3rd medalist in Abby Schoonover who took 10th. The Eagles Siddalee Huff was 19th and Charly St Mars 32nd so their 5 rollers all placed in the top 32 with 3 in the top 10 out of 93 bowlers. This would bode well for the team competition.

Hudson’s Bay dominates to their 1st State Team Championship

Hudson’s Bay

Much like the 3A team standings there was a clear difference between the top 5 teams. Hudson’s Bay had a solid lead with a total pinfall of 5104 going into day 2 the Baker finals. RA Long did have a shot trailing by 66 pins. But the Eagles would come out firing with a 198, 180, 179, 211 and 199. After just 5 games into the 14 Baker games H-B had extended that 66 pin lead to 227 pins outscoring the Jills 966-805 in that stretch and the Championship was the Eagles.

RA Long held a more than 300 pin lead over Klahowya beginning the Baker round and extended that lead to secure 2nd place. Klahowya and WF West battling for 3rd was really the only race left and the Eagles led the Bearcats by 74 beginning the final day of bowling. The 2 teams would not get out of the 130’s for the 1st 3 games each. With that trend continuing as neither team could outscore each other to either dig into that lead or extend it until the 9th Baker game where Klahowya picked up 41 pins to shut down any thought of a Bearcat run at 3rd place. WF West would also do plenty to keep Orting in 5th place to grab the final team trophy.

For Hudson’s Bay they won their 1st team State Championship in school history after recording 3 2nd place finishes. RA Long picked up their 2nd runner-up trophy after winning their 1st title last year. They also have 3 3rds and 3 4th place finishes.

Klahowya tabbed their 3rd, 3rd place finish with 2 4th places and WF West took home their 1st 4th place finish to go with 2 State Titles and 3 3rd place trophies.
