The Emerald Ridge Jaguars and Union Titans battled to get one step closer to the State Tournament. Making the District Semifinals guarantees a spot in State.
In the first half, Emerald Ridge couldn’t miss from three-point land. In one of the most sensational halves of shooting, the Jaguars nailed 10 threes, five in each quarter, to roar out to, at one point, a 25-point lead. Emerald Ridge used the three-point barrage to take a 42-19 lead at the break. Union came out of the half on a 13-0 run, led by Nick Burchett, making it a 42-33 game, but Brennan Aoki drained a three for Emerald Ridge to stop the run and Emerald Ridge held a 51-37 lead after the third quarter, despite Union doubling up ER in the quarter, 18-9.
Emerald Ridge finished with another 20-point quarter and a whopping 16 threes to get a 71-54 victory to advance to the District Quarterfinals, where they will play Puallup. It’ll be the fourth time this season they will face Puyallup, and the second time in six days, as the teams squared off in the SPSL Championship Game on Saturday.
Our Thorbeckes Game MVP went to Emerald Ridge’s Brennan Aoki, who came off the bench and had a career night. Aoki had five threes, a career-high, and 15 points, also a career-high. Aoki had two third-quarter threes that were crucial in ending Union’s attempted comeback and was pivotal in getting Emerald Ridge the win.
