2/6/25
Graham-Kapowsin Eagles 4/7/11/11 – 33
Puyallup Vikings 9/11/8/19 – 47
(Puyallup, WA) Puyallup and Graham-Kapowsin faced off on Wednesday in a loser-out, winner to Districts game as part of the SPSL Tournament. With Puyallup being the fourth seed from the SPSL North, the Vikings hosted the Eagles as G-K was the fifth team out of the SPSL.
In the first quarter, the defenses reigned supreme, as both sides were forcing the offenses into tough shots. There were only 13 total points scored in the quarter, as Laney Weaver had five for Puyallup. All four of Graham-Kapowsin’s points were scored by Caylee Noyes as Puyallup led 9-4 after one.
In the second quarter, the teams got their offenses into a better rhythm, but defenses still controlled the game. Puyallup got five more points from Laney Weaver as she was in double figures at 10 points in the quarter. The Vikings took a 20-11 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, Graham-Kapowsin’s offense got rolling, with Sydney Doepke scoring seven points in the quarter for the Eagles. G-K was able to trim the Puyallup lead. Still, toward the end of the quarter, the Vikings had a few big baskets, and Mia Stallcop, who had a layup at the end of the second quarter before the buzzer, did it again in the third to give Puyallup a 28-22 lead going into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, Puyallup had the best quarter of the night, scoring 19 points to pull away and pick up the home victory 47-33.
Puyallup has clinched a spot in the District Tournament and improves to 8-13 on the season. Puyallup will face either Spanaway Lake or South Kitsap in another SPSL Tournament game before the District Tournament next week.
Graham-Kapowsin’s season comes to an end at 6-15, which is quite the feat since last year, G-K didn’t win a single game, and with three new schools in the league, the Eagles did a great job improving and getting into the SPSL Tournament.
Our Thorbeckes Game MVP went to Puyallup’s Lola Woodburn, as she had a game-high 20 points for the Vikings to help lead them into the District Tournament.
Puyallup was also led by Laney Weaver who had 18 points, Mia Stallcop had five points, Adrianna Adams and Hannah Hite each had two points.
Graham-Kapowsin was led by Emma Gatoloai with 13 points, Brooklynn Chang had nine points, Sydney Doepke had seven points, Caylee Noyes had four points, and Aiva Borja had one point.
