(Sumner, WA)

Carson Schmidt shined scoring a game high 16 points. Jalen Hyppa played a full court game, in the end, Sumner defeated Graham Kapowsin 58-36. Both teams gauge their focus towards next week’s district tournament.

This was a matchup of the third placed teams in the SPSL in their respective divisions. This was a rematch of a prior meeting won by Sumner 62-61. Sumner was coming off a victory against Emerald Ridge, the team that edged them for the 2nd spot in the SPSL North due to a tiebreaker.

Sumner wasted no time marking their home gym. Carson Schmidt started the game with a dunk that seemed to be a sign of things to come. Sumner jumped to a 14-9 after one quarter of play. The second quarter was the Jalen Hyppa Show. Hyppa notably generated a steal after GK came up with a defensive board. Hyppa would feature an encore showing in the second half. Sumner outscored GK 18-4 in the second quarter to stretch their lead. The Spartans led after two quarters of play 31-13. The second half featured more of the same, Sumner putting the petal to the metal all the way to the end.

Sumner set the stage for the District playoffs with a 58-36 win over Graham Kapowsin. Carson Schmidt and Jalen Hyppa stood out for Sumner offensively, while Joseph Holt led the offense for GK. Both teams will await for the schedule release on Sunday to see where and when they will start the journey in Districts. First round matchups are scheduled for next Wednesday the 12th.
