HS Basketball: Sumner Advances to SPSL Title Game; Defeats Bonney Lake

The Sumner Spartans thanks to 33 combined points from the cousin tandem of Olivia Collins and Kawehi Borden defeated Bonney Lake 61-37 to advance to the SPSL Championship Game. The win gives Sumner a chance to win their fourth league title in a row. They face Olympia, a team they previously beat this season 69-28.

Bonney Lake came into the SPSL Semifinal with a three game win streak. With a win against Olympia to their resume, Bonney Lake sought to make a statement against their foes from the valley.

The first quarter began with Kessa Nohr and Kawehi carring Sumner in the opening minutes. Nohr’s perimeter shooting and Borden scoring on all three levels helped Sumner jump out to an early 14-9 lead. While Sumner found ways to score, Bonney Lake got into foul trouble. Izzy Meki and Azy Jackson both reached three fouls in the first half. This made the road treacherous for the Panthers. Against the foul trouble, Bonney Lake was able to keep pace with Sumner, trailing 22-17 at the half.

The second half turned into a scoring fest for Sumner. Olivia Collins scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half. Kawehi Borden also shined, scoring double figures in the second half to finish with 17.

In the end, Sumner cruised in the second half to a 61-37 win over Bonney Lake.

Olivia Collins with her 13 point output in the second half was named our Thorbeckes MVP of the game.

The Spartans will face Olympia in the SPSL Title Game Saturday at 6pm from Tacoma Community College. Bonney Lake with the loss faces Emerald Ridge at 2p on Saturday from Bethel High School.
