(Seattle, WA)

Shane Wright scored a pair of goals, Joey Daccord made 36 saves, but in the end, Detroit came out of the Emerald City with their seventh win in a row with a 5-4 shootout victory. The win marks Detroit’s seventh in a row, while Seattle has dropped two straight.

The Red Wings came into the game on a six game win streak, including wins against notably; Tampa, Los Angeles, Edmonton, and Calgary. The Kraken lost at home to Calgary in a game that had Seattle nearly rally back down 3-0. The veteran Cam Talbot earned the start for the Red Wings, while Joey Daccord once again occupied the pipes for Seattle.

Detroit outplayed Seattle in the first period. The control of play tilted the Red Wings way 3:36 in when Lucas Raymond tipped in a wrist shot from Dylan Larkin to put Detroit on the board. Midway through the period, Seattle leveled the game on a goal from Matty Beniers at 9:28. The goal was generated by Kappo Kakko who wheeled around the Detroit net, before setting up Beniers for a snap shot to tie the game. Late in the period, Seattle’s Chandler Stephenson was sent to the penalty box for tripping. Off the ensuing faceoff, Moritz Seider wristed a shot past Joey Daccord at 19:30 to put the Wings up 2-1 heading into the first intermission. The Wings outshot Seattle 9-4 in the period.

Seattle sought to rally, and they called up their first round draft pick of three season ago. Shane Wright finished a three on two to tie the game at 6:29 of the second. With Vince Dunn in the box for tripping, the tie would soon be broken at the 12:07 mark when Jonatan Berggren scored off an offensive zone faceoff. The goal registered as a power play marker, the second of the game for Detroit. This marked two power play goals for Detroit scored off of offensive zone draws. The Red Wings went into the dressing room up 3-2.

Detroit went on another power play in third period when Shane Wright took a tripping call. Seattle unlike the first two tripping penalties, killed off the man advantage. But four seconds later, the puck was in the back of their net. Elmer Soderblom lifted a backhander past Joey Daccord, and Detroit led 4-2. The goal at 3:21 was not a power play goal, but it very much was a power influence goal.

Seattle hoped to rally again. On the rush, Shane Wright scored his second goal of the game off a quick release. Wright sought to dish a pass for Andre Burakovsky. But with Detroit defender Ben Chariot impeding his pass, Wright quickly shot the puck past Cam Talbot. The goal at 10:10 of the third, put Seattle right back in the game.

In the closing minutes of regulation, Chandler Stephenson received a rink wide pass from Brandon Tanev. Stephenson wheeled with the puck on the left side and wristed the tying goal by Cam Talbot. Seattle earned a valuable point in the standings by sending the game into overtime.

Bonus three on three overtime did not solve anything. The game went into the skills competition. In the shootout, it was a no-brainer for Detroit to send out Patrick Kane. The three time Stanley Cup Champion was up to his old tricks, again. His backhander shootout goal in the second round put Detroit up after two rounds of the shootout. Kane’s tally proved to be the difference maker for Detroit, to escape Seattle with a 5-4 shootout victory.

Detroit outshot Seattle 40-27, while winning the battle from the faceoff circle by 58.6%. Seattle went 2/4 on the penalty kill. One of the successful kills was followed by a Detroit goals four seconds afterward. Shane Wright expressed to the media postgame, how he was proud of Seattle’s fight in the third. “It’s obviously not a great end result, but I’m proud of the way we fought there in the third.”

With the loss, Seattle stands nine points back of Calgary for the final playoff spot in the west.

Up Next: Seattle concludes their home stand against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs have won two straight on their road trip up north. Hart Trophy Winner of two years ago, Auston Matthews leads Toronto into Seattle, a place they have never lost at. The Kraken will then head on the road for a stop in Calgary before the Four Nations Break.
