WF West 54, Tumwater 44
(Chehalis, WA) It was a classic fast start that fades and slow start that picked up momentum and never stopped. The T-Birds led by Luke Overbay’s 11 1st quarter points jumped out to a solid 16-10 lead. Overbay hit everything he put up to pace the offense and sharp shooter Jake Dillon hit a 3.
WF West began to slowly pick up their offense and stayed in the game down just 6 after the 1st 8-minutes but knew they could not allow the T-Birds to get too far in front.
In the 2nd quarter it didn’t take long for the Bearcat offense to clamp down on Overbay and in fact wouldn’t allow him to score again in the game as he finished with 11 points. Meantime, freshman Wyatt Hoffman came off the bench and hit for 5 joining Ross Kelley and Grady Westlund both with 5 as well to outscore Tumwater 15-10 and trailed by 1 at the break.
Dillon hit 2 more long balls in the 2nd and between he and Overbay scored 20 of their 26 1st half points. The Bearcat defense shut both of them out in the 2nd half but no one really emerged to replace those points and held them to just 18 2nd half points. Sahara Anthony scored 10 of the 18 but 9 in the 4th quarter after the Bearcats had stretched out their lead.
It did take WF West a while to open up on the visitors outscoring Tumwater just 8-5 in the 3rd quarter but took their 1st lead 33-31 after 3. Westlund continued to hit shots finishing with 13 but more importantly grabbed 17 rebounds for the double-double. Where some of the 1st half shooting cooled for WFW, others stepped up led by Weston Potter who scored 8 of his 11 in the 2nd half and Gage Brumfield 5 of his 7 points all from the free throw line going 5 of 6.
For his efforts, Grady Westlund was named our Thorbeckes MVP with 13 points and 17 rebounds.
WF West is now 4-2 in league play and 8-9 overall and has a huge showdown at 1st place Black Hills on Tuesday. Tumwater drops to 5-2 in league play and 11-4 overall. The T-Birds travel to Prairie on Monday night in a non-league game then will host Centralia on Tuesday.
