WIAA 4A Bracket

#2 Sumner 37, #3 Chiawana 31 (3 OT)

(Sumner, WA) This was an epic game that will not soon be forgotten as Sumner rallied back from a 14 point halftime deficit shutting out the Riverhawks in the 2nd half. In the final 2 minutes of regulation both teams missed game winning field goals sending it to overtime. Both teams would score 7 in the 1st OT. Both teams matched field goals in the 2nd OT. Chiawana would go 1st in the 3rd overtime and the attempted field goal would sail to the left and no good. On 2nd and goal from the 8 Sumner’s Steele Isaacs would head straight up the field to stay in good field goal position but then broke to his left and got the ball across the goal line just inside the pylon to the left side for the game clinching touchdown.

The Spartans are heading to the State Championship game for the 1st time since 1977. Sumner placed 2nd in 1974 to Shelton, won it in 1975 against West Valley (Spokane) and then beat Gonzaga Prep in 1977. Their closest return to the Title game was back-to-back semifinal appearances when they lost to Camas in 2016 and Woodinville in 2017.

Sumner will now face Camas in a 1 seed (Camas) vs 2 seed (Sumner) showdown for the State Championship. The two teams will be the final High School football game of the season next Saturday night at 7pm at Husky Stadium.

#1 Camas 28, #5 Gonzaga Prep 20

(Vancouver, WA) The #1 seeded Camas Papermakers certainly had a flair for the dramatic on Saturday when the 5th seeded Gonzaga Prep Bullpups came rolling in and after 3 quarters led 20-7 and seemingly had a great chance to finish off the top seed. The Papermakers weren’t about to call it quits and put on a 21 point 4th quarter rally to come from behind and earned their way back to the State Championship game where they will face the 2nd seeded Sumner Spartans.

After struggling offensively the Papermakers put together some big plays to play catch up in a hurry incuding a 52 yard swing pass to give them their first lead and a 69 yard catch and run to cap the comeback. This is the 1st game back to the Title game since they won it in 2019. The Papermakers also won it in 2016 and nearly had it in 2013 when Chiawana had that spectacular comeback to win it 27-26 scoring 14 points in the final 55 seconds of the game.
