3A Championship Match
(5) Seattle Prep 2 (3) Roosevelt 1 (5-4 Shootout)
Champion Seattle Prep
Seattle Prep won a wild semifinal against Mt. Spokane when an own goal in the second half by the Wildcats put them ahead. The Panthers would face a very familiar foe in the Championship match. Roosevelt won the first 2 matches and the Metro League title. The Panthers won the district title over Roosevelt so the State Title would be the ultimate tie breaker and Round 4 lived up to the hype. The keeper battle between the Rough Riders Phie Volckmann and the Panthers Vivian Russell was littered with big saves and booming drop kicks. However Seattle Prep fell behind on a corner kick just before halftime. Senior defender Hope Luebbe Davidson showcased not only her ability to cover sideline to sideline but a deft touch and placement on set pieces. Fine Vossler was a force down the wing but it was senior Mia Boltz that hit the equalizer in the 77th minute to force overtime. After 2 scoreless five minute overtimes a shootout would decide the 3A Champion. The first 4 rounds were all made with Kendyll King, Delaney Meehan, Mia Boltz, and Hope Luebbe Davidson all scoring for the Panthers. The 5th shooter for Roosevelt lost her footing and the shot was saved by Russell. All eyes fell on junior Fine Vossler who stepped up and nailed the game winning kick to earn Seattle Prep their 4th State Title in school history.
Mia Boltz was named the Thorebeckes MVP for her goal to force overtime and in the shootout. Vivian Russell was the MVP of the semifinal match.
2nd Place Roosevelt
The defending State Champions played the most minutes at this year’s tournament after a 2-1 overtime win over Bellevue and a shoot-out in the title game. The Rough Riders senior Avery O’Donell scored in the 76th minute against Bellevue then Andrea Cumming hit the game winner 3 minutes into the first overtime to set up a championship match with Metro League mate Seattle Prep. In the title match the Riders came out on fire with Alagna Proskurowski speeding down the wing and firing in crosses to O’Donnell and Cummings. Roosevelt took the lead just before halftime when Andrea Cummings’ corner kick found Malia Kelley at the top of the box. The party came to a halt in the 77th minute when the Panthers hit a late equalizer. In the shootout Roosevelt went first and after the first four rounds it was tied 4-4 the 5th shooter stepped up but her plant foot slipped and the ball rolled to the keeper. Seattle Prep hit the last shot and The Rough Riders are now 1-2 in the last 3 title games. Roosevelt does graduate 10 seniors but with junior defenders Malia Kelley, Elora Franklin, midfielder Dara Lauzen and the speedy Proskurowski coming back they will be looking to get that record back to .500.
4A Championship Match
(8) Lake Stevens 1 (2) Woodinville 0
Champion Lake Stevens
The Lake Stevens Viking knocked off 2 time defending champion Skyline in the quarters and Issaquah 2-0 in the semifinals. Natalia Adamik hit a 50 yard free kick and Noelani Tupua sealed the game in the 78th sending the Viking to the title game for the first time in school history. In the title match Junior Goalkeeper Tessa Anastasi was nothing less than spectacular with an unofficial 15 saves and a second shutout in as many days. Sophomore Noelani Taupa and her sister junior Keira Isabelle Tupua show a combo of speed and touch from the start. Noe got loose on a break away in the 19th minute to take the early lead. Woodinville had a majority of the possession for the match but the Viking defense held and again Anastasi was incredible. Lake Stevens got a scare in the 67th minute on a corner kick by Woodinville and got free in the 6 yard box but Natalia Adamik cleared the ball off the goal line to keep the lead intact. When the final whistle blew the celebration was on and for the first time in program history the Lake Stevens Viking are the 4A Girls Soccer Champions. With the Tapua sisters and Anastasi coming back next year along with defenders Judith Roehl, Mia Ingram and Amira Yaser the Viking might just be able to repeat.
Tessa Anastasi was the Thorbeckes MVP for all the saves.
2nd Place Woodinville
The Woodinville Falcons lost the championship match to Skyline last season but got back to the 4A title game after a 2-1 win over Curtis in the semifinals. Seniors Abbie Mai and Darby Rogers scored against the Curtis Vikings. In this year’s title game against Lake Stevens the Falcons hogged the time of possession and had the ball in the Vikings defensive third seemingly all game. However in the 19th minute a counter by Lake Stevens had Woodinville down 1-0. The Falcons took 8 corners in the match but ran into a brick wall named Anastasi. In the end the early goal was the game winner and Woodinville would have to settle for back to back 2nd place trophies. While seniors Olivia Danks, Darby Rogers, Ally Laccinole and Abbie Mai graduating, the cupboard won’t be bare next year. Goalkeeper Jordin Jones, versatile defenders Lucy Wimsatt and Zoey Lavezzi along with center back Madison Deal are all back. Add in promising freshman Lucinda Richards, Evie Chow and Caitlin Chapko the Falcons will look to get to their third title game in a row just with a different outcome.
3A 3rd/4th Place Match
(8) Mt. Spokane 0 (2) Bellevue 2
3rd place Bellevue
Bellevue fell in overtime to Roosevelt in the semifinal but came into the 3rd place match fired up. The Wolverines had 6 corner kicks in the first half with sophomore Saleen Koszorus putting on a dribbling clinic in the midfield. It was the rock solid Bellevue backline with seniors Kaitlyn Cody and Emily Duke and a trio of freshmen in Lola Paget, Paris Baker and goalkeeper Katelyn Moore that held the Wildcats at bay. The Wolverines got on the board in the first half stoppage time when Koszorus sent a pass across the goal box a Mount Spokane defender put a foot out to clear the ball and unfortunately for the 2nd time in the State Tournament an own goal put the Wildcats behind. The corners would slow in the 2nd half and the wolverines would finish with 8 in the match. In the 78th Kendall Gillem found Koszorus for the 2-0 win securing the 2nd 3rd place trophy in program history.
Saleen Koszorus was named our Thorbeckes game MVP for her overall hustle and game sealing goal.
4th place Mount Spokane
The Wildcats of Mt. Spokane took home the first trophy in program history but they should also get the unlucky award as well. An own goal in the 69th minute against Seattle Prep in the semis led to a 1-0 loss. Another own goal in stoppage time against Bellevue in the 3rd place match put the further behind the 8 ball. I say they were unlucky because they played every team tight and got outstanding play from a core group of players that are mostly returning next year. The Wildcats only allowed one goal by another team in the 2 games and one of those was against the eventual Champion Seattle Prep. Freshman Grace Hughes impressed the crowd with her speed and touch while junior Reece Peterson locked down the backline in the trophy match. With only 3 seniors on the roster in Hadley Teed, Dakota Hansen, and Taviann Walker the future is bright for the Wildcats.
4A 3rd/4th Place Match
(13) Issaquah 0 (6) Curtis 1
3rd Place Curtis
The Curtis Vikings shook off a 2-1 loss to Woodinville in the semis and took home their first trophy in girls soccer in 26 years. They got the lone goal of the 3rd place match on a free kick taken by McKenna Gapol. The senior defender took the freekick from outside the box the Issaquah keeper looked to make the catch but it slipped through her arms and Amiyah Bodine was there to tap it home just before the halftime whistle. The Viking then relied on their stout defense of seniors Gapol and Ivy Korbal with junior Hoku Mose sophomore Olivia Lorella and freshman goalkeeper Nora Bell. Curtis’ speedy forward Shelby Duah gave the Issaquah defense fits and Soph Mayne and Kat West helped shut down the powerful Eagles offense.
The Thorebeckes MVP went to McKenna Gapol for her defensive play and assist on what turned out to be the game winning goal.
4th Place Issaquah
The Eagles have made the final 4 for the fourth year in a row. They played a very physical rainy match against Lake Stevens in a 2-0 semifinal loss. Defender Ella Benders had a really good couple of games but held her own against the power of Lake Stevens and the speed of Curtis. The speed of senior Sawyer Frye was impressive as was the unending motor of Izzy Hammer. Issaquah had several chances but the crossbar seemed to be an extra defender against them. The Eagles are going home with 4th place but have several players coming back including their freshman goalie Ebba Bjorklund who started the second half and made some spectacular saves to keep the game tight.
