11/16/2024

The 3A Post Season kicked off Friday night with round of 32. All games from now on are loser out, winner advances until the ultimate loser out game the State Championship. The 3A classification will compete in a 16-team State Tournament format after the round of 32.

The round of 32 are not State Tournament games but would be better compared to a statewide district play-in game. The seeding committee for the round of 32 is not the same as the committee that will meet on Sunday for the 1-16 seedings into the State Tournament. Sunday afternoon the seeds for the State Tourney should be released and the opening round of state is next weekend.

This post will be updated through the Post Season all the way to the crowning of the 2024 3A State Champions.

Mt. Tahoma 23, Decatur 21

The Thunderbirds end Decatur’s perfect season. Decatur came into the game with a 10-0 record and their first NPSL football title. Mt. Tahoma had a 6-4 record and on a 5 game win streak after starting the season 1-4.

Decatur won the coin toss and differed to the second half. Mt. Tahoma started on their own 35 and set the tone early with a 6 play drive that ended with a Mikkah Cordero 8 yard touchdown run after the PAT it was 7-0. Decatur went 3 and out on their first possession. The T-Birds next possession went 18 plays and ate up almost 12 minutes of the first half. However a fumble at the 5 yard line was recovered by the Golden Gators to keep it a one score game. It looked like it was gonna be another 3 and out but a high snap to the punter lead to a safety and a 9-0 Mt. Tahoma lead. Jorge Martinez picked off Cordero to end the Thunderbirds next drive. Decatur was putting together their best drive of the half but a fumble at the T-Birds 41 stopped that drive in its tracks. Mount Tahoma would end the first half with a 16-0 lead after Cordero found Elijah Durr in the back of the end zone with 5.3 seconds to play.

Halftime Mt. Tahoma 16, Decatur 0

The Golden Gators got the ball to start the 2nd half. 9 plays later Decatur got on the board with a Spencer Holloway QB keeper from 1 yard out. Eric Havili ran in the 2 point conversion to cut the lead to 16-8 with 7:05 to go in the 3rd quarter. Mt. Tahoma’s next drive ended in a punt but Quentin Hodge got an interception ended Decatur’s next drive early. A 3 and out got Decatur the ball back with 9 minutes to go in the game. An 8 play drive saw junior RB Devin Caoagdan score on a 9 yard run but the 2 point try was no good and Mt. Tahoma lead 16-14. A great Briytan Bailey kick return got the ball to the Decatur 23. Five plays later Mikkah Cordero ran in his 2nd 8 yard touchdown to push the T-Bird lead to 23-14. Decatur took little time to score after Holloway completed a 63 yard pass to Maddox Heyliger got them to the 1 yard line. Penalties on the next 2 plays by both teams put Decatur at the 6 yard line. Holloway got the ball to Heyliger in the end zone the PAT was good and the lead was cut to 23-21. A quick 3 and out by Mt. Tahoma gave Decatur 44 seconds to keep their perfect season alive. On the last play of the game Mt. Tahoma brought a rush with Felix Diaz that made Holloway get rid of the ball quickly. After a discussion by the officials it was ruled intentional grounding and the end of the game with Mt. Tahoma hanging on for the 23-21 win.

Our Elisportsnetwork.com MVP of the game was Felix Diaz for his 82 rush yards 2 sacks and the pressure on the last play of the game. Decatur finishes the season 10-1 and Mt. Tahoma is now 7-4 with a game against #2 O’Dea next week.

Eastside Catholic Comes Off The Bye And Picks Up Where They Left Off

Eastside Catholic Crusaders 49, Mountlake Terrace Hawks 20

(Sammamish, WA) The Eastside Catholic Crusaders finished in the top two of the Metro League, which gave them a week off last week to rest up and get ready for a deep playoff run. The Mountlake Terrace Hawks for the second year in a row finished 6-3 after the regular season and were looking to get a road win.

In the first quarter, Eastside Catholic forced Mountlake Terrace to punt on the first possession of the game, and the Crusaders drove down the field in six plays. Quarterback Isaac Corey had a one-yard touchdown run to make it 7-0, with Eastside Catholic leading three minutes into the quarter. Mountlake Terrace put together a 12-play drive and moved the ball down the field but were forced to punt. Eastside Catholic used six plays of 10 yards or longer to quickly get the ball into the red zone, where Jeremiah Burroughs found the end zone from six yards out to make it 14-0, Eastside Catholic leading after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Eastside Catholic forced Mountlake Terrace to punt, and on the first play of the drive, Isaac Corey aired it out deep for freshman Tytan McNeal, who leaped up for the grab to get the 35-yard touchdown and made it 21-0 with Eastside Catholic leading, early in the second quarter. After a Mountlake Terrace three and out, Eastside Catholic had an 11-play drive, capped off by Isaac Corey’s third touchdown of the half, his second rushing touchdown as he punched it in from one yard out again to make it 28-0 with 4:45 left in the first half. Mountlake Terrace was forced to punt and the Hawks defense forced Eastside Catholic to run out the clock to end the half, as Eastside Catholic held a 28-0 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Eastside Catholic would have the longest play from scrimmage on the second play of the half. Jeremiah Burroughs took a handoff, bursted up the middle, and dashed into the end zone for a 61-yard touchdown to make it 35-0, less than a minute into the second half. Mountlake Terrace drove down the field inside the Eastside Catholic 10-yard line but turned it over on downs. The Hawks defense forced a fumble before scoring their first touchdown of the evening, a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Mason Wilson to make it 35-7 with Eastside Catholic leading late in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Eastside Catholic drove down the field and Nick Jones would get an eight-yard touchdown for the Crusaders to put them up 42-7 early in the fourth. Mountlake Terrace drove down the field and Owen Boswell, after a 38-yard run, ran it in on the next play from seven yards out to make it 42-14 with eight minutes to go. Both teams turned it over on downs before Eastside Catholic would get an 18-yard touchdown run from Daniel Jones to make it 49-14. Mountlake Terrace added a late touchdown with Mason Wilson finding Cody Ekanayake for a 15-yard touchdown pass with just a few seconds left in the game to make it 49-20 with Eastside Catholic leading.

Eastside Catholic would win 49-20 and improve to 8-1 on the season. Eastside Catholic will advance to the State Playoffs and will wait to see who they will play. Mountlake Terrace finishes the season with a 6-4 record.

Our elisportsnetwork.com Game MVP went to Eastside Catholic’s senior quarterback, Isaac Corey. Corey had a good game running the ball and threw a perfect ball on the 35-yard touchdown pass and with three touchdowns, he earned Game MVP honors. Jeremiah Burroughs had a great game on the ground, as the speedster had the longest play of the game with his 61-yard touchdown run, and in a blink of an eye, has the capability to pick up the first down. The Eastside Catholic defensive line was outstanding too. The line consists of, Cody Thumlert, Jojo Matautia, Aedyn Havili, Joseph Mbock-Nlend, and Peleki Vuatalevu for the Crusaders defensive front.

Mountlake Terrace had great performances from Owen Boswell, who carried the ball the most for the Hawks and recovered a fumble on defense, Mason Wilson ran the offense nicely, Cody Ekanayake handled the kick return duties and made a nice grab in the end zone for the touchdown, and Aaron Hatfield was all over the place defensively, seemingly in on almost every tackle.
