11/5/24

Two contestants dominated in week 9 of Professor DW’s Football Pick ’em Challenger and we almost had another exact point total for the second consecutive week. Lee Stockwell and Mark Westley rolled through the week as they agreed on every single pick this week. The only game that the duo missed was Carolina’s upset win over New Orleans. For the second consecutive week it came down to who could get closer to the point total.

Heading into Monday night’s game between Tampa Bay and Kansas City, 630 points were scored with just two teams on a bye. Both contestants guesses were over the total after Sunday’s games as Mark had 647 while Lee had 683. Things looked good for Mark as Kansas City’s strong defense looked to slow down a banged up Tampa Bay offense. With the game tied at 24-24, Mark just needed a field goal to earn a win as a touchdown would take the point total to 684, just above Lee’s guess. Kansas City marched down the field and Kareem Hunt scored on a short touchdown run to walk it off and send the point total to 684. The walk-off touchdown kept the Chiefs undefeated and gave Lee a last-second win.

After Alicia Clark became the first contestant ever to win and nail the point total, Lee just missed making it two weeks in a row but still earned his first win of the season. Lee did already qualify for the postseason tournament with a second-place finish in week 1 so he blocks a contestant from qualifying. Mark becomes the 15th qualifier for the postseason tournament with 18 more opportunities for other contestants to qualify. The winner of the postseason tournament will earn a nice prize package including a 55″ smart TV, a kegorator, a theater Popcorn machine and a neon sign of your favorite football team.

It was another so-so week for the Professor who correctly picked just nine games. Some panic picks really hurt DW this week and the losing streak just continues to grow. Honestly, we don’t know what happened to the Professor in week 8 where he actually did a good job because for the rest of the season the Professor has been as mediocre as the Seattle Seahawks.

In week 9 there were a couple of surprising upsets. However, 13 people selected the Jets to upset the Texans on Halloween which was a pretty big surprise. The least picked upset of the week was the game that our two winners missed in Carolina earning their second win of the season by defeating New Orleans. Just six entrants correctly picked that battle between the bottom of the barrel teams in the NFC South.

Week 10’s contest is up and make sure you get your entry in before 4pm on Thursday. Congratulations Lee and Mark and best of luck to everyone this week.
