First Round Games Played on 11/2

Curtis 2, Stadium 0

The Curtis Viking out of the SPSL came into the district tournament as the 2 seed with a 12-1-2 record. The Stadium Tigers out of the NPSL came in as the 7 seed with a 9-3-4 record.

The Viking wanted to set the tone of the game early. Curtis controlled the possession in the first half with Kat West and Tejal Maheswaran feeding their speedy forwards lots of passes. The Tigers backline and keeper Tyler Roberts had hands full but made big plays to keep the Viking at bay. Curtis got on the board in the 35th on their second corner of the half. Olivia Lorella sent a floating kick just outside of the 6 yard box and Soph Mayne sent a hard shot past Roberts for the 1-0 lead. Stadium’s Tyler Roberts had 6 saves in the first half.

Halftime Curtis 1, Stadium 0

The game had been pretty physical in the first half but in the second half it ratcheted up a notch. In the 54th there was a collision in the Stadium penalty box that had the head official pointing at the penalty marker. Soph Mayne stepped up but sent the shot over the crossbar to the relief of the Tigers. Curtis would get close again on their 3rd corner of the match but senior defender Aly Brown held the line and swept the Viking shot away. A similar collision in the box on the other end of the field got both sides of the stands fired up with no call being made. The final goal of the game came in the 67th minute on Curtis’ 4th corner. Our ESN MVP Olivia Lorella took the corner and this time found Hoku Mose in a crowd for the 2-0 lead and her 2nd assist of the match. Stadium got several scoring opportunities late in the match with 2 free kicks just outside of the 18 yard box but both shots by Jordyn Williams went over the crossbar and Curtis held on for the 2-0 win.

With the win Curtis secures a spot in the 4A State Tournament and will play NPSL #1 Kentridge on Tuesday 11/5 in a loser to state winner to district championship game. Stadium goes into the consolation bracket and plays a familiar foe in Auburn Riverside in a loser out match also on Tuesday.
