Sumner 5, Rogers 0

(Sumner, WA) Sitting at the top of the SPSL 4A standings, the Rogers Rams and Sumner Spartans went into their Tuesday night meeting with dreams of a league title starting to come to life. With identical league records of 7-0-1, the Rams and Spartans controlled their own destiny as if either would be able to win out, they would claim a league championship and have loads of momentum on their side heading into the district tournament.

First Half

It didn’t take too long for Sumner to break the ice as they scored the first goal against Rogers since October 8th when Bethel got one against the Rams. While there was an early feeling out process by both teams in their attacking thirds, Sumner would explode for the first goal of the match. A nice pass would be threaded through the defense and into the 18-yard box. Right there was Sara Zehnder who fired the shot into the back of the net  for the 5th minute goal, giving Sumner a 1-0 lead.

In the 11th minute, a cross went off of a Rogers defender and into the net for an own goal to make it 2-0 Spartans still pretty early in the match. Despite getting multiple corners, Sumner could not cash in on any of their set pieces to extend the lead. Alyce Chappelle and Kiara Scheidt would both fire some shots from far out for Rogers but none could get by Sumner keeper Devon Bankers. A free kick inside the corner and on the endline would give Sumner another first half goal. Taylor Mentink lofted a perfect ball that would be cleaned up by Mattie Gillaspy. That last goal before the half would open Sumner’s lead up to 3-0 at halftime.

Second Half

Both teams made goalie changes at halftime with Kennedy Jackson taking over for Sumner and Korinne Mensonides in for Rogers. Sumner’s defense led by Khloe Mahaffey, Taylor Mentink, and Mattie Gillaspy was just too strong for Rogers to breakthrough. In the 60th minute on another corner, Mahaffey would add to her fantastic match with an Olimpico, scoring a goal directly on a corner to make it 4-0. Another Spartan goal would come off of a shot that deflected off of a Rogers defender and in for the final blow. After 80 minutes, Sumner had made a strong statement with a 5-0 win over Rogers.

Our Elisportsnetwork.com MVP of the match went to Khloe Mahaffey who led the Sumner Spartans on defense while adding her own highlight reel goal off of a corner in the second half.

With the win, Sumner moves to 10-2-2 overall and a league best 8-0-1 in SPSL 4A play with just two matches to go. The Spartans return to action on Thursday when they visit Olympia at 7pm. Rogers drops to 8-5-1 overall and 7-1-1 in league play and to third place in the standings. The Rams look to right the ship on Thursday when they host South Kitsap at 7:30pm.
