(Seattle, WA)
The Seattle Kraken faced the Calgary Flames Saturday evening in front of 17,151 at Climate Pledge Arena, with hopes to continue their winning ways after their 6-4 win against the Philadelphia Flyers Thursday night.
It would require extra time, but it was the Captain Jordan Eberle who won the game for Seattle 48 seconds into overtime to give the Kraken a 2-1 win.
The Leadup
The goaltender matchup featured Seattle’s Joey Daccord (2-0-0) against Calgary’s Dan Vladar (2-0-0).
The Flames came into the game with a (4-0-0) record with an undefeated record (6-0-0) at Climate Pledge Arena in their team history.
The Kraken would be without their star defenseman Vince Dunn who was deemed out due to a mid body injury.
Calgary Late First Period Tally
Seattle saw several opportunities in the first period, but Calgary netminder Dan Vladar survived several Kraken scoring chances to keep a clean sheet through twenty minutes of play.
The first period saw Calgary lead in shots on goal 8-5, with Seattle seeing more of the quality chances, but it was in the closing seconds of the first when Calgary broke the ice.
At 19:51 of the first period, Calgary’s Blake Coleman cranked a slap shot from the left point past Joey Daccord to put the Flames in front 1-0. Makael Backlund earned credit for the assist.
The First of Many for Chandler
The Kraken made two big splashes in the offseason.
The first move was adding Florida Panthers Stanley Cup Champion Brandon Montour.
The second was adding two-time Cup Champion Chandler Stephenson.
Brandon Montour scored his first goal as a Kraken on Thursday; it was only fitting that Stephenson’s time would come.
With Calgary down on a two-man advantage, Chandler Stephenson went top shelf to tie the game at 12:25 of the period. Jaden Schwartz and Jared McCann earned credit for the assists.
Calgary outshot Seattle 7-5 in the second period.
The teams went into the dressing room even at 1-1.
Stalemate
The third period began with Seattle outshooting Calgary 10-1 in the first fifteen minutes of the period.
Joey Daccord withstood a flurry of Calgary shot attempts late in the period, yet neither goaltender was beaten in the third.
To 3 on 3 overtime they went at Climate Pledge Arena.
Captain To The Rescue
Overtime began with Seattle bringing out the two newcomers Montour and Stephenson with captain Jordan Eberle.
Stephenson won the opening faceoff of overtime to hand Seattle possession. Brandon Montour drove the puck behind the goal line before he was cancelled by Rasmus Anderson of Calgary.
The Calgary defenseman dished a pass for his teammate Nazem Kadri, who lost the puck to a trailing Brandon Montour.
Montour turned and shot the puck immediately, but Vladar made the initial stop.
The rebound popped right back to Montour.
The newly acquired acquisition fed a pass to a streaking Eberle who roofed in the game winning overtime goal 48 seconds into overtime.
Eberle recalled the overtime goal saying said he, “closed my eyes and shot”. The captain went on to say that the game felt more acquainted to a playoff style type of game. Eberle pointed out how the game had a lot of defense with limited offensive chances, which made earning the win even sweeter.
Head Coach Dan Bylsma referred to the game as a “slog game”, with neither team willing to give an inch.
Aftermath
With the win, Seattle handed the Flames their first loss of the season.
The Kraken are off to the best start in franchise history (4-2-0).
Joey Daccord recorded the win with 21 saves on 22 Calgary shots on goal. Calgary’s Dan Vladar saved 20 of 22 Kraken shots.
