(Sumner, WA) Cascade Christian’s Tayven Collins ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead Cascade Christian to a 49-7 victory against the Kingston Buccaneers.
Cascade Christian saw all three phases shine on the night. The offense accounted for 474 yards with 242 on the ground. The Cougars’ defense forced three turnovers and held Kingston to 144 total yards. And the special teams shined with two kickoff recoveries and a successful fake punt.
Kingston saw their defense come up with three takeaways, with the offense snapping the shutout with 13 seconds to play.
The win ups the Cougars’ record to 3-1 while Kingston drops to 0-4, with the two teams meeting again next week to complete a rare home and home series next week in Kingston.
The game began with Cascade Christian set to punt on their second drive. With the Cougars facing fourth and twelve, Kingston was penalized with too many men on the field. On the ensuing play, punter Maddox Miller ran off right tackle and picked up the first down for the Cougars.
Cascade Christian finished the drive with a touchdown run from Casper Appleman eight minutes into the game.
The Cougars would be in the end zone again 3:35 later with Tayven Collins punching in a five-yard carry to put Cascade Christian up 14-0.
Late in the half saw a wild sequence where Kingston and Cascade Christian traded interceptions four straight drives. The Cougars got the ball back with 26 seconds left in the half. It took two plays for Cascade Christian to find the end zone.
Tayven Collins on an end around pass found Maddox Miller for a 45-yard play. The ensuing play saw Miller on the receiving end of a 35-yard touchdown from Grant Johnson. After a missed extra point, the Cougars led 20-0 at halftime.
The second half quickly saw an exhibition of Cascade Christian’s special team’s unit. Caleb Donahue recovered the ensuing kickoff of the second half, Donahue would cap the drive with a touchdown catch and run. The following kickoff saw a pouch kick that the Cougars were able to pounce on, Casper Appleman capped the drive with a touchdown run to put the Cougars up 35-0.
A Cascade Christian game would not be complete without heroics from receiver Tayven Collins. Collins late in the 3rd quarter scored on a 69-yard touchdown run to put Cascade Christian up 42-0, but Collins would save his best for last.
Early in the fourth quarter, Collins took over quarterback duties for Grant Johnson. The Cougars had the ball at the 50, when a high snap sailed over the head of Collins. Collins ran back to pick up the loose football and hurled a deep prayer that was answered when Benny Dewey tipped the pass into the awaiting arms of Chace Jenkins who ran into the end zone for the astonishing touchdown.
Kingston would score with 13 seconds remaining when Weston Casey found Zane Smith for a 58 yard touchdown.
Tayven Collins for his efforts with 108 yards and two touchdowns on the ground and 95 yards passing including the miraculous touchdown was named our Elisportsnetwork.com MVP of the game.
The two teams will meet again next Friday at 6pm at Kingston.
