Another returning player from last season’s Professor DW Football Pick ’em Challenge returned to the winners circle in week 3 as Cliff Nichols took home the win in an upset filled week of football. Cliff correctly picked 12 of the 16 games including a couple of notable upsets. Cliff was in the minority of participants to pick Minnesota over Houston as well as Carolina picking up their first win over Las Vegas. With just a one-point lead going into the Monday Night Football doubleheader, it all came down to Jacksonville and Buffalo where Cliff correctly picked the Bills who blew out the Jaguars in a laugher of a primetime game.

In second place for the second consecutive week we had to use the tiebreaker. Wes Swick went into Monday night with 10, which was one more than Skip Smith, Jennifer Kickner, Lee Stockwell, and Katie King. Jennifer picked the same as Wes for both games which eliminated her and everyone still alive for the top two spots picked Cincinnati so it all game down to the Jags and Bills. Wes would go 0-2, allowing Skip, Jennifer, Lee, and Katie to all tie him for second. The Monday night games raised the point total quite a bit with 128 total points scored on Monday night alone. That raised the total for week 3 to 664. Both Skip and Lee shot over with 685 and 695 respectively which knocked them out. Katie went low with 378 but Wes had a pretty nice guess of 583 which helped erase the 0-2 on Monday night and earn him second place.

It was not a good week for the professor…again. DW got eight right which was an improvement from last week but still could not end the losing streak which is now up to 20 consecutive weeks. We will be taking applications to hire his replacement.

Cliff earns the $25 cash plus an ESN T-Shirt or Polo as well as entry into the exclusive postseason tournament. Wes will also earn an entry into the postseason challenge as well. The winner of the postseason tournament will earn a nice prize package including a 55″ smart TV, a kegorator, a theater Popcorn machine and a neon sign of your favorite football team.

Now remember, winners can keep winning, you don’t get another post season tournament entry but you do prevent someone from getting in increasing your chances to win. So even if you win you want to keep playing to try and limit the number of finalists.

The rarest upset of the week went to Ricky Wally who was the only entrant to correctly pick Washington to beat Cincinnati on Monday night. This surprised many who expected other upsets like Minnesota over Houston, Denver over Tampa Bay, or Carolina over Vegas to be the largest upset of the week.

Next week’s contest is up and make sure you get your entry in before 4pm on Thursday. Congrats Cliff and Wes and best of luck to everyone this week.
