Camas 33, Lincoln (Tacoma) 14

(Tacoma, WA) The Lincoln Abes and the Camas Papermakers have alternated wins in the last four meetings between the two schools. Lincoln was coming off a 13-point loss to Yelm last week, while Camas got off to a 2-0 start heading into this game.

Camas started the game with the ball and wasted no time as Jake Davidson found Jack Macdonald for a 40-yard touchdown to give the Papermakers a 7-0 lead just a few minutes into the game. After a Camas interception and a Lincoln fumble, Camas would go on a 12-play, 64-yard drive, capped off with a touchdown pass from Jake Davidson to Chase McGee to give Camas a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Jake Davidson again would find Jack Macdonald, as the two connected again for a touchdown, this time a 26-yarder, as the Papermakers held a 20-0 lead. Lincoln responded with an 18-play drive, which saw the Abes march the ball all the way down to the 2-yard line, but the Camas defense held Lincoln out of the end zone as Beau Harlan got a ricochet interception off of a pop pass on fourth and goal from the three. Lincoln forced Camas to punt, and Ramon Jones had an excellent punt return to set up Lincoln at the 29-yard line with half a minute to go in the half. The Abes’ sensational sophomore quarterback, Sione Kaho brought Lincoln down to the 13-yard line with three seconds left in the half, and on the last play of the half, Kaho rolled out of the pocket, directed traffic as he went towards the near corner of the end zone, but was knocked down less than a yard from the goal line as time expired which saw Camas hold a 20-0 lead at the half.

Camas started the third quarter well as they forced Lincoln to punt after Kaho had a 27-yard first down run. The Papermakers would put together the drive of the game, a 13-play, 86-yard drive, which ended with Davidson finding Nikko Speer on an 8-yard screen. Speer dodged defenders on his way for the touchdown, and Camas went up 27-0. Lincoln was forced to punt, but Camas fumbled on their next possession. Lincoln couldn’t do much with that drive as the Abes attempted a pass over the middle that took a deflection, and the ball went high into the air, falling right into the hands of Nikko Speer, who charged in to make the interception.

Camas turned it over on downs and the Abes would capitalize early in the fourth quarter, which was highlighted by Kaho tossing a 39-yard pass to Kasey Williams who almost scored but was ruled out of bounds a yard short of the end zone. Kaho would plunge forward for the Abes to put Lincoln on the scoreboard and make it 27-7 with Camas still on top. Jake Davidson and the Papermakers offense wasted no time getting their fifth touchdown of the game, as on third down, Camas set up a screen for Titan Brody who did the rest, going 51 yards to give Camas a 33-7 lead. Lincoln drove down the field on a 12-play, 80-yard drive where Jadeon Scranton made his way into the end zone for the touchdown. The Camas lead was 33-14 and on the final drive of the game, the Papermakers defense forced another turnover, with Nikko Speer ripping the ball out of the intended receiver’s hands and coming up with his second interception of the half.

Camas would take the road victory 33-14 and improve to 3-0 on the year. The Papermakers will take on Oregon City next week. Lincoln drops to 1-2 on the season and will play Gig Harbor next week.

Our Cole Health Game MVP was a tough choice as it could’ve gone to a handful of players, but ultimately, Nikko Speer, with two interceptions and using some fancy footwork for his third-quarter touchdown, was enough to get the MVP honors.
