Tenino 5, Onalaska 0
(Tenino, WA) For the third time already this season, the Onalaska Loggers took on a team out of the Evergreen 1A conference when they took on the Tenino Beavers on the Blacktop on Tuesday night. After defeating Hoquiam in their first match against the league, Onalaska played to a 1-1 draw against Rochester on Monday night. With their second match in as many nights, the Loggers had their hands full against a Tenino squad that has started strong in 2024 and entered the match coming off of a win against Aberdeen.
The opening ten minutes were controlled by Tenino before Onalaska started to earn possession time themselves. Paisley Garcia would set-up the Tenino offense for the most part as they tried to get leading scorer Callie Mickelson an opportunity to get a shot on goal. Onalaska goalie Emily Hicks played strong as the freshman denied everything that came her way early. Onalaska tried to get some counters with Kiyah Sandridge and Leighton Underhill leading the way offensively. Then, in the 33rd minute the Beavers broke through. Kyla Watson made a great cutback to open some space and fired a beautiful shot into the top left section of the net. The breakthrough changed the vibes at halftime as Tenino had a 1-0 lead at the break.
Early in the second half, the Beavers opened up the floodgates. With Onalaska only subbing once in the entire match, the second match in as many days seemed to wear down the Loggers. In the 45th minute, Kyla Watson delivered a perfect corner kick that was just headed in by Callie Mickelson to make it 2-0. Two minutes later, Holly Thoren fought hard for a possession and won it before delivering a great pass to Mickelson who made it 3-0.
Onalaska’s defense did not just roll over though as they continued to play hard and not give Tenino anything easily. Kiley Talley, Jaelyn Auman, and Sylvie Little all did a nice job of limiting the looks for Tenino. Nothing came easy but Tenino found ways to add on the hard way. In the 62nd minute, Maria Summers dribbled through some traffic before finding Callie Mickelson for her third goal of the game with all three goals being assisted by different Tenino Beavers. Paisley Garcia put the finishing touches on the strong home win with one last late goal on a phenomenal shot to make it 5-0 Tenino over Onalaska.
Our Thorbeckes MVP of the match went to Kyla Watson for Tenino. Watson would get the scoring started by setting herself up late in the first half and delivering a beautiful shot. She would then show pinpoint precision on a corner early in the second half on the assist to Mickelson. Watson was extremely accurate and effective everywhere on the field and put together a very strong 80 minutes.
Tenino’s win moves the Beavers to 3-1-1 and they will be back in action on Thursday when they host WF West at 7pm in a match you can see right here on ESN. Onalaska drops to 2-3-1 and will get the rest of the week off before hosting Forks on Monday at 6pm.
