(Sumner, WA) Cascade Christian def Sumner (25-8) (25-14) (25-13) The Sumner Spartans hosted the Cascade Christian Cougars in volleyball last night with the Cougars having not lost a regular season set since October the 9th of last year.

Cascade Christian and Puyallup both played their season openers on Monday with Sumner winning in straight sets against Decatur, Cascade Christian won their match in straight sets on the road against Rogers.

The first set saw Cascade Christian jump out to a 5-0 lead, which proved to be a sign of things to come. Jenica Walling was pivotal in the first set, her service run put the Cougars in command early. Cascade Christian would cruise in the first set, 25-8.

Set number two turned into the Layne Dent show, the Saint Mary’s commit shined with two kills in three points for Cascade Christian through the middle stretch. Sumner’s Natalie Byran, Ava Miller, and Brooke Arnardi did what they could to keep the Spartans in it. The second set, however, was claimed by Cascade Christian, 25-14.

The third set saw the Cougars combine for the highlight of the night with the Cougars 9-3. Sumner’s two sport athlete Kawehi Borden attempted a spike, Ryann Fortenberry got a piece of the spike, Layne Dent set up Sophie Janho for a desperate clearance, Sumner couldn’t return the prayer, and Cascade Christian took a 10-3 lead. Cascade Christian would have another five-point scoring run to leave no doubt thanks to fantastic work at the net from Layne Dent and Gracelynn Zetterberg, the Cougars won the third set 25-13 to seal the win.

Our Cole Health MVP of the match was Jenica Walling, her elite serving highlighted the night in the Cascade Christian win.

Sumner will host Fife on Friday night at 7:15. Cascade Christian will have their home opener against 4A powerhouse Puyallup at 6:30.
