(Tumwater, WA) The Tumwater T-Birds hosted the Fife Trojans on Tuesday night and had the benefit of 2 matches already under their belt. It was Fife’s opening match of the season. The T-Birds had a decided advantage with the game experience and they took advantage of jumping out to a quick lead taking the 1st set 25-13. 

Tove Hugus got things going from the service line hitting for 4 points expanding their early lead from 5-3 to 9-3. Hugus got some help from the front line of Brooklyn Bonfield, Paige Henderson and Bailey Broeker. Broeker would finish off the set scoring the final 3 points with an ace.

In the 2nd set Tumwater rolling quickly with an ace and 3 points from Broeker. A few servers later Lalie Betschart added a triple of her own. McKayla Clary had a couple of big hits for the T-birds during this run to help extend to an 8-2 lead. Bryn Miller sparked some Fife offense with a pair of points with an ace to cut the lead to 11-9 and the Trojans were in this approaching the mid-set mark.

The T-Birds then took control when Broeker came back to the line with a 13-11 lead and fired off 4 straight points with her 2nd and 3rd ace of the set. Betschart then fnished it off with 4 straight points for the 25-13 win powered by a kill shot from Hugus.

Despite dropping both sets by 12, the Trojans began to find a bit of a groove in that 2nd set and began the crucial 3rd set battling back and forth to a 5-5 tie. Tumwater’s Hugus then exploded and gave the T-Birds a huge lead firing off 8 straight points with a pair of aces and 14-5 lead. Fife did not give in and battled back with a 3 point run from Makayla Carlson and great net play from Ugonna Anusiem and Patrice Robinson.

Jean Manzano then hit 4 straight points for the Trojans with an ace to pull into a 17-17 tie and it was a new match and race to 8 points with a couple of great blocks from Talula Lenoir. The teams traded points to get to 19-19 when just a slight run gave Tumwater the final advantage when Hugus stepped up again hitting 2 points and pushed the lead to 22-19. Fife could not recover as they traded points and Tumwater finished the set with with a 25-22 win taking the match 3-0.

The T-Birds improved to 3-0 on the season and will host R A Long Wednesday night. Fife begins 0-1 and are back in action on Thursday at Sumner. Our Thorbeckes MVP of the match came down to Tove Hugus and Bailey Broeker with Hugus getting the nod with here 10 service points in the final set as the slight difference.
