Tenino 3, Chelan 1

The Tenino Beavers opened the 2024 girls soccer season against the Chelan Mountain Goats. These teams played last season in Chelan and saw the Beavers come away with a 7-0 win. This year Chelan wanted to show improvement and make this a much closer game while Tenino would like to start the season with a big win.

The Tenino offense came out firing from the start of the match and spent most of the first half on the Goats side of the field. Chelan’s back line and junior goalkeeper Avari Barker turned the Beavers away time and time again. In the 19th minute that changed when Tenino’s Holly Thoren broke free and took a hard shot at goal Barker deflected the shot wide but the Beaver’s Emily Battin was there to tap the ball in to take the lead 1-0. Tenino would keep up the offensive pace but would have to settle for the 1-0 lead at the half. Barker racked up 7 saves in the first half to just 2 saves for Tenino keeper Allison “AJ” Kalkus.

Chelan had the opening possession of the second half and came out with a different level of intensity.  Tenino’s defense withstood the opening barrage and helped swing the momentum back in their favor. Tenino would get their 2nd goal when Kyla Watson found Holly Thoren on a corner in the 58th minute. The Beavers 3rd and final goal of the game came in the 64th when Callie Mickelson dribbled her way past defenders and got a one on one with the Chelan goalie. Again Barker was in the right spot but it was just too hard of a shot by Mickelson to make the play.

The Mountain Goats didn’t make this long trip to go home with a zero on the board. Madeline Cowan took care of that in the 76th minute on a hard shot that went off the hands of the Beaver’s keeper and into the back of the net for the 3-1 final score.

The Thorbecke’s MVP went to Tenino’s Holly Thoren for her assist, goal, and hustle throughout the match. Chelan finished with 2 corners in the match and I had Avari Barker with 12 saves. Tenino had 4 corners all in the 2nd half and AJ Kalkus had 3 saves.

Tenino travels to Overlake on Monday September 9th for their next match. Chelan hosts Omak on Thursday September 12th.
