Spanaway Lake runs away from Stanwood in 47-42 thriller
Spanaway, WA ~ There were points galore Thursday where D’Aryhian Clemons shined with three all purpose touchdowns in Spanaway Lake’s season opening win against Stanwood.
The Sentinels struck first when Laron Paige scored from 34 yards out to put Spanaway Lake in front 8-0 after a two-point conversion originated from a botched extra point attempt.
On the ensuing kickoff, Spanaway Lake recovered a botched return, and nine seconds later, Clemons caught a nine-yard score from QB Chase Best to put the Spanaway Lake up 14-0 after a blocked extra point.
Stanwood responded on a masterful thirteen-minute drive with Eben Bland scoring on a four-yard plunge to cut the deficit in half, 14-7.
On the ensuing kickoff, D’Aryhian Clemons ran back the kickoff to restore a two-score lead for Spanaway Lake.
The Spartans of Stanwood answered with a Silas Turpin touchdown in the closing minutes of the half to again trim the deficit to a one score game.
It was only a matter of time when Malik Burns burned the Stanwood secondary with a late touchdown to put the Sentinels up 28-14.
Stanwood showed great fight, answering the Spanaway Lake score with a touchdown run from Alex Maldonado with no time left in the half.
Spanaway Lake led at the break 28-21.
The Sentinels were given a short field on multiples occasions that put them in command in the second half with three rushing touchdowns, while Stanwood rallied, but ran out of time at game’s end.
D’Aryhian Clemons came away with our Cole Health MVP Honors with the three all-purpose touchdowns.
