Johnny Gaudreau, brother, struck and killed in accident
Columbus Blue Jacket and former Calgary Flame, Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew were struck and killed while riding their bikes in Salem County, New Jersey. Johnny Gaudreau was 31, Matthew was 29.
Police arrested a driver and charged them on two counts of driving under the influence and death by auto.
Gaudreau rose to prominence in the USHL with the Dubuque Fighting Saints leading them to a Clark Cup Championship in 2011. Gaudreau would move on to Boston College, where he helped the Eagles win a national championship while also winning the Hobey Baker Award for best college hockey player in 2014.
Johnny Hockey made his NHL debut with the Calgary Flames scoring his first NHL goal on his first shot on goal against the Vancouver Canucks on April 13, 2014.
The rookie campaign for Gaudreau saw him finish third in Calder Trophy voting, finishing with 24 goals and 40 assists in what was an all-star campaign.
Gaudreau would make the NHL All Star Game seven of eleven times during his career, he won the Lady Byng Trophy for most gentlemanly conduct in 2017.
The standout moment of his career comes in the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs in Game 7 double overtime against the Dallas Stars where Gaudreau sneaked in the series winner past Dallas’s Jake Oettinger to win the game and the series.
Gaudreau would be traded the next offseason to Columbus where he played his final two seasons with the Blue Jackets.
Johnny Hockey leaves behind a wife and two children.
