(Auburn, WA) 41 of the 42 race days going into Friday have been all fast tracks with the lone off track day was 1/3 wet fast and 2/3’s sloppy. Friday night after a day long deluge the track was sloppy to begin the night. It didn’t stay sloppy long as after the 1st race the stewards shifted the condition to wet fast which stayed for the rest of the card. Then on Saturday it was sloppy all day with addfitional rainfall.
So now officially there have been 354 races run this season with 11 races posted as sloppy and 12 as wet fast with the remaining 331 as fast. The track played pretty fair on Friday with the wet-fast condition for most of the night as there were closers, stalkers and front speed all winning and hitting the board.
Then on Saturday with the sloppy conditions for all 7 races you needed to be close to the lead to win. No winner began their race worse than 3rd place so didn’t need the lead but a close stalking position was a must.
Both days offered great chances to make money with some big favorites mixed in. In this story we will cover all 14 races from Friday and Saturday with upsets in both feature races.
Let’s get to Saturday’s card!
6th Race Final leg of the Hollywood Harbor Sprint Series
They began with 15 starters and 2 races back in July in the opening round of the inaugural Hollywood Harbor Sprint Series. The friends of Hollywood Harbor raised an additional $30,000 to add to purses of this 3 leg and ultimately 4 race challenge.
In the opening round on July 20th Run Snappy and Kevin Krigger won the 1st race with Mr. Fireball and Javier Matias winning the 2nd race of the day. Roll Dem Bones didn’t get off to a good start as he was 8th and last in the opening round.
The 2nd round on August 3rd drew 10 runners and Run Snappy who was claimed in that 1st run did not return under new owner/trainer Nick Lowe. Mr. Fireball with Krigger taking that ride took 5th and Roll Dem Bones under Juan Gutierrez showed more with a 4th place finish at 25-1. 8-1 Party Foul won the race with Karlo Lopez.
Saturday was the final round and you had to have run in the 1st rounds to be eligible for the finals. 8 went to the gate and it was Uncle Leon with Allyssa Morales that the public settled on betting Leon down to 9-5. Uncle Leon and Morales were coming off a 2nd place finish in the 2nd round losing to Party Foul by just a 1/2 length.
But the story was the track which came up sloppy and knowing you had to be close to the pace Juan Gutierrez broke well with Roll Dem Bones from the 3 hole at 9-1 and had the lead by the 2nd call in the 6 furlong sprint. Most thought this would be another scramble to the finish with the sprinters all taking their best shot but it was Bones’ day.
Setting quick fractions of 21.28 and 43.42 Roll Dem Bones and Guti were ready to rock and never slowed down pulling away to a 3 length lead turning for home and by the 1/8th pole the race was over as they extended their lead to a crushing 6 lengths for the win. Roll Dem Bones thrived in the mud stopping the clock in a blazing 1:08.16 the 2nd fastest 6 furlongs of the meet, only Neiman’s 1:07.98 has been better.
6-1 Mr. Fireball ran 2nd with Javier Matias collecting $5,850, 3rd place went to 24-1 Quiet Charm with Manuel Americano earning $3,450 and 4th place was 28-1 Summanus and Alex Cruz picking up a nice 4th place check for $1,500.
Roll Dem Bones collected $17,100 from the $30,200 purse for claimers that was ran as a starter allowance in the final leg. Bones is owned by William Jensen and trained by Joe Toye. The duo claimed Bones out of the 1st round in the race on July 20 for $8,000. Roll Dem Bones is now 7-13-5 from 47 liftime starts. The 5 year-old West Virginia bred gelding pushed his career winnings to $181,398.
Roll Dem Bones paid his believers well $21.12, $9.94 and $7.14. The 50-cent trifecta a huge $670.47 and the $1 superfecta $8340.60.
One of the fun aspects of this series was the claiming frenzy it created in the 1st and 2nd rounds. In the 1st 2 races on July 20 9 of the 15 starters were claimed all at $8,000. 4 of the 10 were red tagged in round 2 at $10,000 each. The final round again was a starters allowance with no claiming available. The grand total of claims from the series was 13 claims for a total of $112,000.
ESN talked with Friends of Hollywood Harbor spokeswoman Jody Peetze who says they were thrilled to bring this series to Emerald Downs this year and says it is evidence of just how much support there is of racing in the NW. Peetz says Emerald Downs does a great job in attracting on-track fans which is critical to the local fanbase.
Peetze says she couldn’t be more supportive of all the fun events the track’s promotional department does but she says it’s also important not to forget the meat of the meat and potatos and that’s horse racing and all of those who make it happen. This is why the friends of Hollywood Harbor put this challenge series together.
Peetze says she was very happy with the response from the horsemen and willingness to race in the series. She says all you have to do is look at the number of claims that happened in the first 3 races. This was a great series and we’re happy to have been able to raise a little bonus for those who work in this business 365 days a year. We definately hope to do it again next year.

Let’s get to Friday’s action!

The public settled on Holy Tutta Bella as the odds-on favorite with the powerful team Kevin Krigger and Justin Evans and Tutta ran a great race. But they ran into a determined Lucinda Rella at 11-1 with Carlos Montalvo up as they both began the 6 furlong sprint along the inside. Montalvo allowed Don’t Tell Hydee and Luis Reyes to take the lead from the 4 hole while Lucinda Rella was #3 and got oin behind her on the rail with #1 Tutta Bella 4th also inside and they made their way down the back stretch.
Those positions would hold going into the far turn but Krigger and Tutta eased out into the 3 and 4 path while Montalvo decided to stick to the fence hoping Don’t Tell Hydee would drifft off the inside when they turned for home. Just as they were inside the 1/4 pole holy Tutta Bella passed Rella as they waited for an opening and as Holy Tutta Bella aimed at Don’t Tell Hydee, Hydee and Reyes did drift out a path or 2 opening the door for Montalvo who pressed go on Lucinda Rella and she responded rallying along the rail to get up for the head win.
