6th Race Feature Race

The field of 8 fillies and mares lined up to go 6 1/2 furlongs with the betting favorite at 2-1 in On Purpose which showed a little pace but then faded for a bit of a dull effort. Just behind the 2-1 choice were 3 4-1 shots and a 6-1. The other 3 longshots finished at the back of the pack.

Lady Cruiser w/Carlos Montalvo

Carlos Montalvo, who topped our weekly Power Rankings, remained red hot picking up his 2nd win of the night with a last to 1st run on Lady Cruiser. Montalvo and Lady Cruiser broke last from the 1 hole and allowed the front speed and the rest to get in front of her as Montalvo wanted to get off the rail.

Down the backstretch Lady and Carlos eased out into the 3 and 4 paths as they hit the far turn. 6-1 Aliceshouseofhearts with Luis Reyes had been stalking in 4th, 4-1 Smokemonthecliff with Alex Cruz got 1st run and took the lead at the top of the stretch and 4-1 Infinite Love with Manuel Americano was also in position after starting back in 7th.

Just inside the quarter pole Lady Cruiser and Montalvo were in 5th or 6th but had gotten to the outside for a wide open run and Montalvo kept the momentum rolling sustaining the long run Lady Cruiser was on. By the time they hit the 1/8th pole Lady Cruiser was 5 or 6 wide as they were all lined up and she continued to swamp the other contenders pulling out to a clear length win in a final time of 1:17.12. Aliceshouseofhearts was a clear 2nd, Infinite Love closed well for 3rd with Smokemonthecliff 4th.

Howard Belvoir for Longshot Bettors

Belvoir noted for his 3 Longacres Mile wins and 60+ year career is a big friend to longshot players this season. Of his 7 wins only one was less than 5-1 at 8-5. He’s had 2 5-1 shots win, last night Proud Lion was 9-1, a winner at 10-1, 13-1 and 16-1. The average odds for a belvoir winner in 2024 is 9-1 and an average $2 win payout of $20.25. The Golden Egg finally got his 1st win ion his 18th career start. The Golden Egg is a 4 year-old gelding and came into the race with an 0-6-5 record and had earned a decent $27,321 with no wins. Apprentice Manuel Americano got aboard The Golden Egg for the first time and that seemed to be the magic connection. This was also trainer Debi Jahns 2nd win of the meet from just 5 starts.

The win wasn’t easy as there were objections lodged by 2 other runners against The Golden Egg going into the 1st turn but the Stewards rules the interference caused to one of the runners wasn’t The Egg’s fault and the other was ruled insufficient interferfence and let The Gold Egg finally have his day.
