8/11/2024

(Auburn, WA) Championship Sunday is biggest celebration of the heart and soul of horse racing in the Pacific NW. This day is 100% focused on the sport itself, the horses, the jockeys, trainers, owners and bettors. For the purists and experienced horse player this is their Super Bowl and boy did they turn out and did they put their money through the betting windows. Sunday was the largest handle day of the year by a long way as fans bet $2,352,057 on the 11 race card.

The large crowd was enthusiastic, they were loud and they stayed the entire day. For that committment they were treated to a truly great day of racing with yet another unbelievable finish in the jewel of NW Racing the Longacres Mile.

4 big stakes races on the card one after another from the 6th through the 9th race and of course culminates with the Longacres Mile. This was the 89th version of the race that began in 1935. Five Star General was seeking to become only the 4th horse ever to win back-to-back Miles and the 5th to ever win 2 Longacres Miles. The 8 year-old 5-2 morning line favorite Five Star General is the only horse in Longacres Mile history to place in the top 3 4 times and aimed to extend that streak on Sunday.

Below is our coverage of the 4 Stakes races  beginnig with the $150,000 Longacres Mile. Our re-caps of the other 7 races on the 11 race card will be next with a limited news and notes and the claim report. A quick note we are now linking the full equibase chart to each race which gives you all the pay-offs and additional information.

9th Race The 89th Longacres Mile $150,000  1-Mile

A late scratch of #1 Neiman reduced the field to 11 running the historic flat mile and all eyes were on #9 Five Star General trying to extend and add to the history and mystique of the race. When the gates flew open the likely front runner 6-1 Clovisconnection with William Antongeorgi did on fact quickly gain control of the pace. 45-1 Deshambeau was quick out 2nd with 32-1 Phantom Ride settling into 3rd.

The question going into this race without much pressure on Clovisconnection how would 1-1 and defending Champion Five Star General handle it and how far would local favorite and 2023 Mile winner Slew’s Tiz Whiz drop back waiting to make his big run?

The first question was answered by jockey Joe Bravo when we talked with him after the race (full interview below). Bravo and trainer Grant Forster had changed their minds on how the track was playing on Sunday and felt they would need to be closer to Clovis who they thought would be on the lead than originally anticipated. Bravo says they went to plan B.

However, plans can change as quickly as the gates open and as they tried to hustle out of the gate the short run to the turn from the 9 hole hung them out and a wall of horse did not allow them to get over. Bravo says when he saw that he knew he had to change plans quickly and get in as best position down the backstretch as possible saying, “I knew then I needed to stay out of trouble to give him his best shot at running down Clovisconnection”.

Meantime, Antongeorgi and Clovisconnection had cleared the field down the backstretch and controlled the pace setting early fractions of 23.14 and 46.05. Slew’s Tiz Whiz at 7-1 got over to the rail and dropped back as 10th place but Jose Zunino his regular rider wasn’t going to panic and give up position.

As the field hit the 1/4 pole Clovisconnection led by 3 and 10-1 Arma d’Oro with Kevin Krigger had moved up and looked like may make a run but he flattened out and would finish 5th. Five Star General had begun to move and quickly went from 6th to 3rd and loomed up to the outside of Clovisconnection. 6-1 Prince Abu Dhabi and Alexander Chavez was also making a move on the outside and on the rail after waiting for a hole to open Slew’s Tiz Whiz was getting a bit of a late start but had a huge opening.

Inside the 1/8th pole it became a 2 horse race with Clovisconnection trying to finish what he started and Five Star General digging in and closing the gap. Slew’s Tiz Whiz was also hitting his best stride but was about 4 lengths back. Inside the 16th pole it looked like Five Star General would take 2nd and Clovisconnection would hold on when he found another gear and as the finish line approached the two hit wire heads apart in a bobbing finish. After the photo sign was taken down the #9 was posted 1st and Five Star General added to his history in the Longacres Mile as just the 4th to win back-to-back Mile Championships and 5th ever to win two. The final time was 1:34.98.

The Clovisconnection connections were stunned no doubt believing they had this one as late as the final strides. The Slew’s Tiz Whiz crew is wondering if he hadn’t been held up on the turn waiting for that opening could the local fav had pulled off his 2nd Mile win as Slew and Zunino ended up just 1 1/2 behind the top 2 and was closing with every stride. Prince Abu Dhabi and Arma d’Oro both ran hard and finished 4th and 5th.

The Five Star General supporters were frenzied with the win. One of the reasons is was this Five Star General’s last career race. Ken Alhadeff the leader of Elttaes Stable has publicly stated that he will consider quite seriouosly of retiring Five Star General after this race. No doubt winning it in this fashion makes it a lot easier to make that decision and retire him in a John Elwayesque move stepping away after winning the Mile twice in a row and placing in the top 3 in all 5 starts in 5 consecutive years.

The one benchmark that really is left is hitting the $1 million earnings mark as he is just short after Sunday’s win. Five Star General picked up the $82,500 winners share and now has a career bankroll of $902,202. His career record is now 13-6-9 from 39 career starts. This is a 33% career win precent and 72% top 3 finish rate. Of his 13 wins 15% of them came from the Longacres Mile and 18% of his top 3 finishes were from the Mile.

Clovisconnection and their owner William Hedrick and trainer Blaine Wright no doubt are trying to figure out how Clovisconnection didn’t get the win and no doubt disappointed in the finish but did pick up $30,000 for running 2nd. Wright is also the all-time 3rd winningest Stakes Trainer in Emerald history and was tied with Tom Wenzel coming into the day. Wright was trying to get one of those back in the mile and he is 7 behind the all-time leader Doris Harwood.

Wright also sent out Prince Abu Dhabi who took 4th so he hit the board with both entries and picked up $9,000 for 4th for a $39,000 take on the race. Tom Wenzel trains Slew’s Tiz Whiz and was trying to sweep a Stakes pick 3 but settled for 3rd and picking up $18,000 for the run.

Five Star General’s winners circle picture had to be moved to out on the track because the group was simply too many to fit in the winners circle. Five Star General paid $4.00, $3.04 and $2.42. The special 50-cent all-stakes pick 4 paid $74.81.

Alhadeff says they are going to give Five Star General some time to relax and a final answer will be coming soon. Alhadeff says he has earned the right to step up to his next career and will do some research on where Five Star will move to the breeding barn. Alhadeff says he can’t wait to see the proginy of this magnificent animal hit tracks.

His final Longacres Mile stat line is:
5 starts 2 wins, 1 place and 2 shows earning a total of $215.000

Year, placing, money earned and jockey:
2020 2nd place lost to Anothertwistafate $20,000 (Mario Gutierrez)
2021 3rd place lost to Background and Windribbon $12,000 (Mario Gutierrez)
2022 3rd place lost to Slew’s Tiz Whiz and Papa’s Golden Boy $18,000 (Leslie Mawing)
2023 1st place $82,500 (Joe Bravo)

8th Race The 45th Washington Oaks $50,000 1 1/16-Miles

The late scratch of 3-1 favorite Arctic Breeze left 10 to run the 1 1/16 mile Washington Oaks Stakes for 3 year-old fillies. This left #1 Chai as the 7-2 morning line favorite and was fresh off a tight 2nd place finish in the Kent Stakes losing by a neck to Arctic Breeze. Chai would go off as the 6-5 favorite.

11-1 Special Diva and Rocco Bowen would go to the lead and set an aggresive pace leading by 2 lengths with times of 22.90 and 46.80. 17-1 I’m Telling Mom with Alex Cruz sat just behind in 2nd then came 2nd favorite LaPush and Carlos Montalvo and 3rd choice 7-2 Paynt Ya Later with Juan Gutierrez.

Heading into the far turn Special Diva led and LaPush moved up the rail to take 2nd and Chai with Isaias Enriquez began to move up the inside on the rail as well while I’m Telling Mom and Paynt Ya later looked like they may be flattening out. Halfway around the turn is when Montalvo had waited long enough and cruised up to the outside of Special Diva to quickly take a length lead. Chai was moving well on the rail and 16-1 Rocky Bay Rae with Kevin Orozco began to stir moving into 4th place. I’m Telling Mom was going a bit wide at this point while Paynt Ya Later was done.

At the top of the stretch LaPush had stretched her lead to 2 lengths but went wide and Montalvo went to work on keeping her straight, Chia looked like she was going to make a big run while coming from far back was Signora Vittoria with Kevin Krigger at 23-1. Just inside the 1/8th pole Montalvo and LaPush had straightened out and began adding to her lead to nearly 3 lengths. That moved seemed to kill any momentum Chai had built up and she would finish 5th.

Signora Vittoria began a big run down the far outside and I’m Telling Mom re-emerged just to her inside as both were trying to run down LaPush. But Montalvo had this one measured and won the 45th Oaks  by a length over Signora Vittoria  who had a clear 2 length lead over I’m Telling Mom who ran a big final furlong after dropping to 6th and looking like she was done to coming back and hitting the board. Rocky Bay Rae who flattened out a bit in the final 16th to grab 4th from Chai.

LaPush is owned by James Carlin and trained by Tom Wenzel as Wenzel doubles in the statkes races to push his Stakes victory count to 62 now just 5 behind Harwood for the Emerald all-time mark. LaPush earned $27,500 and won her 1st career stakes race. She is now 4-0-0 from 6 lifetime starts and has now earned $73,960. The final time was 1:45.06.

LaPush paid $8.84, $5.22 and $3.86. The $1 exacta was $84.02, the 50-cent trifecta $654.75 and the 10-cent superfecta $640.56.

7th Race The 29th Emerald Distaff $50,000  1 1/16-Miles

The 29th running of the Distaff for 3 year-old fillies and mares and up had a field of 9 step into the Emerald Downs gates and 5-2 morning line favorite Aloha Breeze would be the one to catch. The multiple stakes winning sprinter though had 2 turns to deal with and last year in the Oaks ended up 7th so the question was could Aloha Breeze get the distance?

The public didn’t lose faith, the ownership group didn’t lose faith, trainer Tom Wenzel kept the dream alive and Carlos Montalvo said there is no way she can’t go 2 turns and win this and Montalvo’s confidence was well founded. Aloha Breeze went off as the 1-1 favorite and quickly took command. No one really went with her early to push her and hit the 1st quarter mile in 23.14. She stepped it up while extending to a 7 or 8 length lead down the backstretch in 45.70 and the 3/4’s mile in 1:09.41.

On the far turn Montalvo was cruising and once she hit the top of the stretch and switched leads she shut down any thought she was going to slow down and rolled to an 11 length geared down victory in a final time of 1:42.27. Track Announcer Tom Harris nailed the call when he said Aloha Breeze is running them right off their feet just inside the 1/8th pole with a dazzling turn of foot.

The rest of the field quickly figured out they were in a race for the minor awards and Owner Richard Rennie got not 1 but 2 of the minors with Jamies Inheritance and Allyssa Morales at 9-1 closing to be 2nd ahead of 5-2 Tizzy Twister with Kevin Krigger and Rennie’s 46-1 Ropers N Wranglers with Alex Cruz grabbed 4th place.

Aloha Breeze races for George Todaro and trained by Tom Wenzel. The win moved Wenzel to 2nd in career Stakes wins with 61 and just 6 behind all-time leader Doris Harwood. Aloha Breeze picked up the $27,500 winners share and pushes her career earnings to $195,010 and has a career mark of 7-2-0 from 11 lifetime starts.

6th Race The 87th Muckleshoot Derby $50,000 1 1/16-Miles

The late scratch of 15-1 Veritas Aequitas reduced the starters to 7 and the well balanced field was not upset with the scratch of one of the 2 longshots. The lukewarm morning line favorite Tougherthantherest at 3-1 with Silvio Amador is coming off a 3rd place finish in the Auburn Stakes and a win in the Irish Day Stakes on July 13.

When the gates opened Tougherthantherest was indeed the betting choice at 5-2 but a slight choice as Whiskey Jack with Carlos Mlontalvo and Meeking with Joe Bravo were both 3-1, Dynamic Secret and Juan Gutierrez were 7-2 and invader Goodbye Dal with Luis Jimenez Aburto at 9-2.

Tougherthantherest went to the lead with Meeking right off his flank, Dynamic Secret settled in 3rd on the rail and Whiskey Jack stalked in 4th. This grouping would stay this way all the way to the very top of the stretch when Dynamic Secret got rolling on a wide open rail as Touogherthantherest drifted to the middle of the track and Meeking had to go wider and Whiskey Jack dropped to the inside as well.

Dynamic Secret pulled away to a 3 length win while Tougherthantherest dug in valiantly to hold 2nd by 2 over Whiskey Jack with a length to spare to 4th place Meeking. The final time was

Dynamic Secret races for the Friendship Stable, Q Stable and Craig Frederickson and trained by Bonnie Jenne. Dynamic Secret is a Washington bred by Dynamic Impact out of Bay Street Beauty by Harbor the Gold and was bred by Bar C Racing stables.

The win was the 1st Derby win for Jenne who has been training since 1976. Jenne set her goal to win the Derby and thought early on that Dynamic Secret cou.ld be the one. Coming up to the race the one question was could he get the distance of 1 1/16 miles. Jenne said she was concerned about the distance but said Juan Gutierrez was confident after working Dynamic several times. Gutierrez proved to be right on the mark.

Dynamic Secret earned $27,500 for the Derby win and is now 2-5-0 from 9 lifetime starts and has pushed his bankroll to $66,486. Dynamic Secret paid $9.78, $4.70 and $2.80. For all the pay-offs click on the Chart link for complete pay-outs.

The rest of Sunday’s races

1st Race
A field of 6 went 6 1/2 furlongs and closer Napoletano got up to win with Allyssa Morales kicking off Championship Sunday with a nice return at 6-1. Napoletano caught front speed Corn Pop and Juan Gutierrez at 5-2 while 6-5 top choice Overly Fast with Kevin Krigger did show and 9-2 Winter Falcon with Luis Negron coming back to ride in the Stakes races took 4th. Napoletano races for owner/trainer Miguel Hernandez and ran the 6 1/2 furlongs in a quick 1:15.84.

Napoletano scores again!

2nd Race
Elder Mack with visiting jockey Alexander Chaves were the odds on 3-5 choices and went straight to the lead but Chavez allowed the frisky Mack to settle in and was pressured by 14-1 Knockout Guy with Alex Cruz. The 2 squared off all the way to the quarter pole when Chavez began to let Elder Mack out and took full control to win by 2 lengths in 1:37.64. Knockout Guy ran a big race for Cruz and held off 4-1 Kliknkerback and Allyssa Morales for 2nd while 21-1 Dekudylan and Javier Matias got up to complete the superfecta. Elder Mack races for Chappell Alpine Farms and trained by Blaine Wright. The 1st $1 daily double of the day paid $16.92.

3rd Race

Cruz and Paid in Full had total command of the pace and won by 3 lengths in a fast time of 1:35.57. Paid in Full races for Rod Parkinson and trained by Debbie Peery. 7-2 Ko Samui with Jose Zunino was a clear 2nd best, 7-1 Move Over and Carlos Montalvo ran 3rd and 2-1 Creative Bid and Rocco Bowen completed the superfecta. 4th Race
11 maiden 2-year-olds went 5 1/2 furlongs in the 4th race with 5 1st time starters breaking from the Mark Gibson starting gates. The betting public was split in this one with no ovwhelming favorite and they finally settled on Da Smoke at 5-2. Da Smoke would go to the lead with West Coast Bull at 7-2. 9-1 He’s not Talking would slip up the rail with Javier Matias to stalk and 19-1 Checkered Flag and Kevin Orozco would roll up on the outside as they turned for home. West Coast Bull would fade and He’s Not Talking took the lead with Da Smoke and Checkered Flag still with a shot.

However, 13-1 #7 Candy Caballo with Leslie Mawing got hammered out of the gate pinched by both the 6 and 8 horses and dropped to last. Mawing did not give in and got to the rail and then began picking off the other 10 horses one by one and in deep stretch squeezed through a hole on the rail and got up in the final stride to spring the upset with a spectacular run by a nose. It was a tough beat for He’s Not Talking who looked like the winner while Da Smoke ran another credible race in 3rd and Checkered Flag ended up 4th. Candy Caballo races for George Todaro and is trained by Tom Wenzel and ran the 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:04.24. There were huge pay-outs with a 13-1 over 9-1 over 5-2 over 19-1 click on the Chart link below for all the prices.

News and Notes

Jockeys
Carlos Montalvo had a huge day with 5 mounts and 3 in stakes races. Montalvo finished with 2 wins and a 3rd in the Stakes races and somehow was left out of the Longacres Mile. Montalvo is the leading Stakes rider at Emerald Downs now with 4 wins, 3 shows and a 4th from 10 starts for a 40% win rates in the big races.

Montalvo has now banked $136,250 in stakes earnings along as he added $61,000 on Sunday. He finished the week with a 3-1-3-0 record from 10 starts. We caught up with Montalvo after his final race of the day to talk with him on his 2 Stakes wins with Aloha Breeze in the Distaff and LaPush in the Oaks.

Montalvo ran 3rd on Whiskyjack in the Derby. The only other rider to have 2 wins was Luis Reyes who took the 5th and 10th races. Allyssa Morales had a nice day winning the opener and finishing 2nd in the Muckleshoot Derby aboard Jamie’s Inheritance. Juan Gutierrez got a nice win in the Derby, apprentice Manuel Americano got another win taking the 11th and last race of the week for his 2nd win of the week.

Leading rider Alex Cruz had a win in the 3rd and then placed 4th in the Distaff on 46-1 Ropers N Wranglers and took 3rd in the Oaks on 17-1 I’m Telling Mom. And Leslie Mawing came away with an impressive win in the 2 year-old race when he got pinched at the gate and shuffled back to last before a crazy run up the rail to win on 13-1 Candy Caballo.

There were 6 riders shipping in from out of state but only 2 got wins and only 1 stake. Joe Bravo of course won the Mile but also placed 4th on Meeking in the Derby. Alexander Chaves rode 3 won the 2nd race and placed 4th on Prince Abu Dhabi in the Mile. William Antongeorgi rode 3 and missed the board on 2 before just missing with Clovisconnection in the Longacres Mile settling for 2nd.

Luis Jimenez Aburto rode 2, Rocco Bowen had 4 rides and got 1 4th and Luis Negron also had 4 mounts with just a 4th place finish. Negron had ridden at Emerald Downs last season where he was the leading rider for a good portion of the year before Alex Cruz was able to run him for his 4th consecutive riding Championship. Negron finished 2nd with 55 wins before leaving early last season. He is now riding regularly at Mountaineer Park in West Virginia and we had a chance to catch up with negron on his return to the Northwest.

The Betting Window

The betting window will be highlighting tops pays of the day and other unique results. For the full list of pay-outs you can click on the Equibase Charts link under each race re-cap.

Sunday the large crowd wagered more than 2.3-million dollars. Of that more than $650,000 was wagered on or included the Longacres Mile.

Overall the pays were ok with a few big one but not too many really small ones either. The biggest disappointment was the All-Stakes special 50-cent Pick 4. It was disappointing because we couldn’t get a longshot or even a medium shot to get in the winner’s picture and the 7-2 to 1-1 to 3-1 to 1-1 pay-off was just shy of $75. I mean for those odds the pay-off was actually not bad.

However, if Clovisconnection had held on as the 6-1 2nd favorite, that’s how much Five Star General was favored the pay-off would have been more than $187. And if 7-1 Slew’s Tiz Whiz had won it would have paid $250.
