8/4/2024

(Auburn, WA) Racing is heating up at the beginning of August with about a 1/3 of the season still to go. This weekend 3 big races, the WTBOA Lassies and Lads were run and the 2nd leg of the Hollywood Harbor Sprint series. Plus several streaks were extended, broken and begun. It was a fun week of racing and great opportunities to win big.

We will cover both Stakes races and the Hollywood Harbor sprint sereis heat #2 first and then the other Saturday and Sunday races plus news and notes, the betting window and claims report.

WTBOA Lads Stakes Sunday’s 8th Race

Sunday’s WTBOA Lads stakes saw a field of 7 contest the 6 1/2 furlong race and betting choice Si That Tiger with Silvio Amador aboard took care of business in a big way. Amador and Tiger got out of the gates in 2nd place but quickly took command along the insie down the backstretch opening up a 2 length lead while setting fairly even fractions of 22.12 and 44.54.

Si That Tiger w/Silvio Amador

No one challenged the pace with the closest stalker early on being longshot Kiss the Tiger and stablemate Vivacious Tribute. Both of them would not fire on this day and finished at the back of the pack. Picking up momentum on the turn was the son of Barkley, Impasssable with Javier Matias. Barkely of course a Longacres Mile winner and multiple stakes winner for Hall of Fame trainer Howard Belvoir is still looking for his first offspring’s win. His babies are hitting the track this season for the 1st time.

10-1 Impassable ran a great race and finished all alone in 2nd place. His great race was bested by the superior performance from Si That Tiger who just kept adding to his lead winning by 5 1/2 lengths over Impassable who was 5 1/2 in front of everyone else so Si That Tiger beat most of the field by at least 11 lengths in a final time of 1:16.33. 7-2 Big Bowie got up for 3rd and 16-1 Verdi with Carlos Montalvo closed from last to get 4th.

Si That Tiger is owned by John and Janene Maryanski and Gerald and Gail Schneider and trained by Blaine Wright who is the leading Stakes trainer this season. Si That Tiger was bred in California but bred by Washington resident Darlyne Kreig. Si That Tiger earned $27,500 and now has $41,900 in the bank running his record to 2-0-0 from 3 lifetime starts.

Si That Tiger paid $4.88, $3.22 and $2.70. Impassable returned $8.02 to place and $4.78 to show while Big Bowie paid $2.72 to show.

WTBOA Lassies Stakes Saturday’s 7th Race

The 2nd in the series for 2 year-old fillies sent 5 to the gates to battle the overwhelming 4-5 6th entry Precise Timing and Kevin Orozco. The competitors had one advantage and that was Precise timing coming out of the 1 hole where the track is playing slower could be a big difference in this run from 6 1/2 furlongs.

Precise Timing w/Kevin Orozco

The probelm was Orozco was well aware of the rail and when the gates flung over he and Precise Timing went straight to the lead to get off the lead and moved out to the 3 path. 6-1 Sapello La Fina and Allyssa Morales in the 2 hole went to the rail and pressured from the inside of Precise Timing. 6-1 Coconut Dreams with Javier Matias and 3-1 A Thousand Miles with Kevin Krigger sat in the stalking roles as they set fractions of 22.47 and 45.75.

Orozco let Precise Timing out a bit on the turn and had built a 2 length lead turning for home. Sapello La Fina got squeezed back a bit on the turn and as they hit the stretch Orozco angled toward the middle of the stretch which opened the inside for Morales and they came running but Precise Timing had the answer and won by 3/4’s of a length. A Thousand Miles would be a clear 3rd and Coconut Dreams held 4th.

Morales claimed foul against Precise Timing for the tight racing room heading into the turn but the Stewards this time did not make any changes and the final result stood. Precise Timing ran the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:19.15.

Precise Timing is owned by Blue Ribbon Racing #23 and trained by Kay Cooper. Precise Timing is a Washington bred by Dialed In out of Peaceful Nation by Nationhood and was bred by Mr and Mrs Frederick Pabst.

Precise Timing paid $3.60, $2.72 and $2.10. Precise Timing is now 2-0-0 in 2 lifetime starts and 2-0 in Stakes wins taking the Angie C in her maiden win and now the Lassies. She picked up $33,000 for her work in the Lassies to push her total bankroll to $63,250.

Hollywood Harbor Sprint Series 2nd Round Saturday’s 6th Race

Party Foul w/Karlo Lopez

There were 10 of the 15 runners from the opening 2 heats to enter in round 2 of the Hollywood Harbor sprint series and Mr Fireball was the only winner to try the 2nd round. Run Snappy won the 1st heat and was claimed out of that race for $8,000 by owner/trainer Nick Lowe who did not enter him for the 2nd round of the sprint series. You had to have run in the 1st round to be eligible to run in the 2nd round and only those who ran in the 2nd can run in the Sprint Finals set for Saturday, August 24 at a distance of 6 furlongs.

The 2nd round was again set for 5 1/2 furlongs and Mr Fireball with Kevin Krigger was bet down as the 4-5 odds on choice but Mr Fireball showed some early speed but flattened out to finish 5th opening the door to a 3rd different winner in the series.

10-1 Party Foul had everything going against him. He was the 2nd entry of trainer Justin Evans, popped and stopped in the 1st round of the Sprint series back on July 20, Karlo Lopez the 3rd leading rider was in a mid-season slump and hadn’t won a race since taking the Kent Stakes back on July 14 and was rolling into day 8 of a 7 day winless streak and Party Foul hadn’t won since August 20 of 2023.

Despite all that the public knew any Justin Evans horse is one you have to respect, they knew Karlo Lopez was not going to go winless for the rest of the season and they knew Party Foul can win at Emerald in August. Those who figured that out also got a decent 8-1 as Lopez and Party Foul went straight to the lead and quickly drew off to a 2 length lead setting fractions of 21.77 and 44.26.

Mr Fireball was in the chase early with Uncle Leon and Allyssa Morales at 9-2. 6-1 Mirror Image with Isaias Enriquez and 25-1 Roll Dem Bones with Juan Gutierrez sat back further waiting to make their runs.

As they hit the quarter pole Party Foul extended his lead to 2 lengths and to 3 by the 1/8th pole. Mr Fireball had hit the wall and Uncle Leon was gearing up and began curtting into the lead. By the 16th pole it was down to 2 lengths and although Party Foul was tiring he had enough to hold off Uncle Leon and posted the 1/2 length victory. Mirror Image and Roll Dem Bones both closed well as Mirror Image was on the hip of Uncle Leon just a neck back at the line and Roll Dem Bones a clear 4th. The final time was 1:03.08.

The win gave Evans his 2nd win in the series and Lopez snapped that 7 day losing streak with a huge victory. The 6 year-old Party Foul is owned by Rakoczy Racing and Evans and is now 6-1-1 from 15 lifetime starts snapping his own 3 race losing streak. He earned $14,250 to add to his career earnings to $62,317.

Party Foul paid $18.36, $9.54 and $4.10 the $1 exacta a solid $53.33, the $1 trifecta $199.94 and the $1 superfecta $1,450.60.

In the 6th race the tote board blew up thanks to 37-1 Vhagar and Kiaman McGregor. Vhagar just behind the front speed and swung wide for the stretch run and nobody believed the longest shot on the board was gonna come running and roar past everyone to win going away by more than 2 lengths. The bigger news was owner Luanne Bean and trainer Bob Bean had both the favorite in 2-1 Square Fun with Kevin Krigger and the Vhagar. The Bean exacta paid $274.31, the 50-cent trifecta $861.27 and the $1 superfecta a monster $21,887.76. More on this race in the Betting Window below. River Dance

6 furlongs was the distance for this field of 6 and the horses were coming from behind and doing it out in the middle of the track and the rail seemed to be a bit deeper and slower. 4-1 River Dance and Carlo Montalvo broke last and moved up on the rail around the turn before swinging wide and roaring down the stretch to win by 3 lengths in a time of 1:11.37. River Dance races for Free Brook Racing and trained by Scott Freeman. 5-2 2nd choice Bumping River and Leslie Mawing ran a clear 2nd, top choice Sensible Lute at 2-1 with Alex Cruz had the early speed and held on for 3rd with 4th going to Prancing Matilda and Allyssa Morales. But a stewards inquriry would flip the result do to some negligible interference late at best for a stunning DQ call. This gave the win to Ain’t No Sissy and Reyes for owner Sil Juarez and trainer Debi Jahns. Juarez also bred Ain’t No Sissy here in Washington and the 5 year-old is by Gold Aly out of Missisissy by Harbor the Gold. 7-2 Nation of Faith ran 3rd and Theuntouchableone with Alex Cruz was 4th. 5th Race

Mary Walker

The bias was against front speed but Mary Walker and Carlos Montalvo proved it wasn’t a bias you couldn’t overcome as they went straight to the lead in this 6 furlong sprint with 5 breaking from the gate. Mary and Carlos set all the fractions of 22.36 and 44.92 and the odds on top pick had enough to hold off 3-1 Charmant E and Kiaman McGregor in a final time of 1:10.22. 6-2 Rodeo Rose and Alex Cruz was 3rd with 7-1 Tiz a Tuger and Allyssa Morales 4th. News and Notes

Krigger and Evans

Justin Evans

Kevin Krigger and Justin Evans are on an amazing run this season and it’s only getting more historic. Combined they have had 62 starts and rung up a record of 27-14-7-5 for a crazy 44% win rate, 66% exacta finish, 77% in the trifecta and 85% in the superfecta. They’ve had 1 3 win day, 7 double wins with a streak of 6 days in a row with 2 wins and 10 days with at least 1 win. Their streak for at least 1 win is now at 11 days.

The numbers get stupider when you include only the days they have had a starter Of the 37 race days they have had starters on 26 days. Out of those 26 days they have had 18 days with a win or a crazy 69% and they have been in the top 4 25 of 26 days or a 96% placing rate.

Krigger and Evans have just 1 start set for this coming Friday to try and extend their win streak.

Isaias and Lucarelli

Isaias Enriquez is having a very good season and he is the 1st call for the Frank Lucarelli barn. Enriquez and Lucarelli put a nice little streak together of 4 consecutive days with a win which ended last Friday.

Carlos Montalvo

Carlos Montalvo is on quite a run this season and picked up another 4 wins this past week and they happened to be his 1st 4 mounts of the week. Montalvo nearly made 5 in a row on Saturday in the final race but couldn’t get Reservoir to hold on in the final race. Montalvo is currently 3rd in the win standings, 3rd in the earnings standings and one of 4 with a win percent above 20% at 22%.

Karlo Lopez

Karlo Lopez

It was quite a mid-season dry spell for Karlo Lopez when he busted out of it winning the 2nd round of the Hollywood Harbor Sprint Series on Saturday. Lopez was sitting high after his 1st Emerald Stakes win in the Kent Stakes on Julky 14 with Arctic Breeze. Lopez then went winless for 7 straight race days and fell from #2 in the standings to #4.

Lopez wasn’t done coming back on Sunday to double with wins in the 7th and 9th races to record a triple for the week. Lopez keeps himself in the mix as he leads all riders with 2nd place finishes with 51.

Kiaman McGregor and Bob Bean

Kiaman McGregor had one of his best weeks at Emerald Downs but more importantly he and trainer Bob Bean blew up the tote board on Sunday when McGregor came rolling late with 37-1 Vhagar. Bean also saddled the 2nd place finisher in Square Fun who was the favorite in the race. Bean told Joe Withee that was his 1st exacta finish in his long career. Vhagar set several new season high pay-outs and are listed below in the betting window.

Amador/Wright and Orozco/Cooper/Blue Ribbon #23

Silvio Amador has been overlooked quite a bit this season not getting as many chances as he did in his first year last season but he remains one to watch in the big races as he won his 3rd stakes race on Si That Tiger in the Lads to lead all riders. He is 3-0-1 from 6 Stakes mounts for a 50% win rate and also leads in Stakes earnings with nearly $90,000.

Si That Tiger’s trainer Blaine Wright has been the leading stakes trainer multiple times and takes the lead with his 4th win, 1 more than Tom Wenzel with 3. Wright and Wenzel are tied for 2nd all-time at emerald downs with 59 each. Wright has now collected $124,075 in stakes earnings.

Kevin Orozco led the riders in Stakes wins a few years ago and is back in the mix getting his 2nd Stakes win taking the Lassies with Precise Timing. This is the 2nd win aboard Precise Timing for veteran trainer Kay Cooper. Cooper is now 2-1-0 from 3 Stakes starts banking $73,250.

Trainer Notes

Trainer Luciano Gabriel tripled this week with 2 wins on Friday and taking the 9th and final race on Sunday. Gabriel was a perfect 3 for 3.  Scott Freeman got his 1st win of the season on Saturday with River Dance in the 3rd, Debbie Jahns got her 1st win since coming back with Ain’t No Sissy  in the 4th on Saturday. She did have to come ouot on the right end of an Inquiry but in this game a win is a win. Preston Boyd, Logan Harshman and Adriana Zarate all made their 1st starts of 2024 at Emerald Downs this weekend.

Hollywood Harbor Sprint Series Eye-Popping Claims record

The claims report from the Hollywood Harbor Sprint series have put serious dollars back into the game. On July 20 with the firwt two heats a total of 15 ran in those races and 9 of the 15 were claimed by new owners. Many others dropped claims something like 17 or more. Then this past Saturday with 9 runners there were 9 claims put in for 4 of the horses so 4 got new owners.

The requirement to run in the series to advance to the 2nd and final rounds triggered the flurry of claims from would be owners to get in on the expanded purse thanks to the Friend of Hollywood Harbor group led by Jody Peetz.

Adding up the claiming impact in the opening round 9 horses were claimed for $8,000 for a total of $72,000. In round 2, 4 horses were taken for $10,000 totaling $40,000. The 9 horses still eligible to run in the final on August 24 cannot be claimed as the race will be a starters allowance.

The 4 taken on Saturday only had 2 that were claimed the 1st weekend and the winner Party Foul was not taken and remains with his current owners and trainer.

So the final claiming sales for those 3 races and 15 horses was a total of 13 claims for an astounding $112,000.

The Betting Window

New Season Highs

Sunday that blast you heard from the infield was not another Fireworks show but the tote board blowing up when 37-1 Vhagar and Kiaman McGregor won the 6th race. Vhagar was 37-1, Square Fun was the favorite at 2-1, 8-1 Parker’s Fifteen was 3rd and 4th place went to 2-1 2nd choice Northern Linchpin.

Vhagar did not set a new season high for the $2 win that still belongs to 41-1 Sporty Nugget from July 13 paying $83.80. Vhagar paid $77.02. But Vhagar’s $2 place of $39.62 was $9 more than Sproston’s pay on July 6th. Vhagar also set a new for the $2 show of $14.36 replacing the $13.74 of Smoken Shadow.

Vhagar also led the charge in a new high 50-cent trifecta of $861.27 over the $781.99 from June 7th. The 10-cent superfecta was obliterated with Vhagar in front paying $2,188.76 more than doubling the the $1,090.67 set on June 21. The Vhagar exacta combined with the favorite Square Fun, both horses owned by Luanne Bean and trained by Bob Bean paid $274.31 just about $10 short of the season high $284.17.

The $1 daily double of Vhagar to Creme de Menthe paid a new season high of $704.87 far more than the old mark of $396.94. The 50-cent pick 3 just missed the new high pay falling short by $30. The season high is $2,130.80 and the 2-1 Stay Sissy in the 6th to Vhagar in the 7th to 9-2 Creme de Menthe in the 8th paid $2,100.43. The 3 pick 3’s Vhagar was part of paid $799.99, $2,100.43 and $1,707.50.

The 2 pick 4’s with Vhagar the first paid just $117.19 but you only needed 3 of 4 winners as no one had all 4. Can you imagine if you had Vhagar on your ticket but missed one of the 1st 3, hoping everyone had the 1st 3 and all missed on Vhagar. The final pick 4 was not close to a record as following Vhagar the winners were 9-2, 7-5 and 3-5.

The pick 5 paid a big $8,511.37 but not close to the $25,371.01.  Going into the final though only the 3-5 favorite Sport Coat and 3-1 Westerberg had winning tickets alive and if anyone else wins would have created a big carry-over. Reservoir at 8-1 nearly got it done losing by a half length to Sport Coat in the final 25 yards.
