(Auburn, WA) It was Premio Esmeralda weekend and big crowds with great racing was the order of a cooler weekend, weatherwise at Emerald Downs. No stakes races on the schedule this weekend but special quarter horse qualifying heats on Sunday.

The Premio Esmeralda celebration focuses on the large hispanic workforce in racing from riders to grooms to trainers and owners. The day featured colorful dance and the famous dancing horses. Check out our pictures and video at the bottom of the story plus our racing photo gallery.

We will cover both Saturday and Sunday races in this re-cap but will begin with weekend news and notes, take a quick look at the betting window and the list of claims.

Weekend News and Notes

Krigger and Evans

Krigger and Evans frequent the Winners Circle on a regular basis

The story of the meet is the incredible run jockey Kevin Krigger and trainer Justin Evans were on and are on. The duo had teamed to win 2 races over 5 racing days on Friday night. The duo had a pair of runners on Saturday and Krigger came through on both rides including the feature race by a nose to push that streak 6. Through Saturday they were 23 for 49 with a blistering 46% win rate.

On Sunday the 2 win streak came to an end as the pair got 1 win but finished with a pair of 2nds. It looked like Krigger may keep it alive in the feature race with odds on favorite Coastal Jazz but Executive Chef and Juan Gutierrez came flying late to get up for the win. So the 2 wins in a day streak was snapped after 6 in a row. They still have another streak goling though and that’s at least 1 win a day now at 8 days in a row. These are days they have a starter and began on July 12. They did not have a starter on July 13 but have reeled off this incredible streak to push it to 8.

We compiled all the Krigger/Evans stats and you can see how dominant they have become especially in July.

Multiple Winners

There were several multiple winners from jockeys to trainers and owners. Of course Kevin Krigger and Justin Evans led the way but Krigger also won for other and finished the week with 6 wins and 4 2nds from just 11 starts. Alex Cruz continues to lead the jockey standings and scored 4 wins this week but Krigger did gain 2 on him to pull within 13 down 44-31.

Luis Reyes

Luis Reyes also had 4 wins and actually 5 wins but his win on Sunday in the mixed breed 870 yard sprint does not count in the thoroughbred standings. Reyes now has 23 wins on the year. Carlos Montalvo and Isaias Enriquez both tripled while Jose Zunino, Juan Gutierrez and Kiaman McGregor all got a win.

A couple of other notes, Karlo Lopez has hit a tough stretch and although contiues to hit the board regularly has not won since taking the Kent Stakes on Artic Breeze on July 14. He has been blanked out of the winners circle for 6 straight days. No doubt he is about to burst, it makes no sense that Karlo doesn’t come alive here in short order.

Also a heck of an effort from apprentice Manuel Americano who had a season high 9 mounts and even though he didn’t get a win he was 0-2-4-2 or 8 of 9 in the top 4.  Also consider the lowest odds horse he was on was 4-1 in a 5 horse field and his mounts average just short of 16-1. The apprentice has only 2 wins on the season and in his career but he is becoming a must play in superfectas and trifectas at long odds, seems like more wins are coming.

One other name from the past was back this week, Jake Samuels. Samuels rode in the 2nd quarterhorse heat where he finished 5th and took longshot Romanian in the mixed breed but finished last and had 1 thoroughbred mount aboard Withee in the 8th race and placed 6th. Samuels does work a lot of horses during the mornings we shall see if he intends to keep picking up mounts on race days.

Miguel Hernandez

Other trainers had solid weeks as well starting with Frank Lucarelli with a triple and a 2nd from 6 starters. Blaine Wright added 2 wins this week and Miguel Hernandez recorded a pair of wins from just 3 starts. Other trainers with wins included Shawna Christian, Vince Gibson, James Gilmour, Michael Morris, Hilario Perez, Sergio Perez, Jose Gutierrez, Carl Seymore, Joe Toye, Scott Tubbs and Tom Wenzel. Justin Evans leads the standings adding 5 wins to his total now at 39 which is 14 better than 2nd place Blaine Wright.

A couple of owners had double wins this week. Rakoczy Racing and Justin Evans had a pair of wins along with Miguel H Racing which is Miguel Hernandez. Rakoczy Racing and Justin Evans extended their wins lead over John Parker to 3 up 10-7 and Miguel Hernandez pulls into a tie for 2nd with Parker with 7 wins.

Let’s get to the races from Saturday and Sunday!

In the 1st race a field of 7 was topped by 1-2 shot Secretarysbestcard with Jose Guerrero aboard. Code Charlie went to the lead and set all the fractions while Capital Expense started last and rallied wide down the stretch but just ran out of ground to settle for 2nd. 11-1 High On Cuervo with Allyssa Morales was 3rd and finishing off the superfecta was 15-1 Heart on the Run with Karlo Lopez.

9th Race the Premio Esmeralda Feature Race

The Feature race of the day had a field of 6 going 6 1/2 furlongs with all eyes on the 1-2 favorite Coastal Jazz with Kevin Krigger as he tried to keep the streak of 2 wins in a day alive with him and trainer Justin Evans. Evans had another entry in the race Cool Papa G at 5-1 with Alex Cruz and the duo actually battled each other on the front end setting down some blazing fractions of 21.82 and 44.24.

If someone was going to come running late the table got set for them as they turned for home with a 2 1/2 length lead and Coastal Jazz beginning to edge away from Cool Papa G. There was one runner that was not ready to hand over the race and they began their attack swinging out 4 wide with a wide open stretch to do their damage.

Executive Chef the 4-1 2nd choice and Juan Gutierrez got their momentum flowing on the turn and with ears pinned back came roaring down the lane to pass a fading Cool Papa G and their sights set on Coastal Jazz and would get to the winner just inside the 16th pole and finished 3/4’s of a length in front in a stunning sprint to close out the race. Coastal Kid at 10-1 with Luis Reyes took 4th.

Executive Chef kis owned by John and Janene Maryanski and Gerald and Gail Schneider and trained by Blaine Wright. Executive Chef earned $14,535 to add to his bankroll now at $143,023. The Betting Window

Odds-on favorites were almost a lock bet this weekend. There were a total of 12 odds-on favorites and 9 won at a massive 75% rate. The other 3 all placed 2nd for a 100% exacta finish. Overall, there was a total of 14 favorites winning this weekend with 6 on Sunday, 3 on Saturday and 5 on Friday night. There was a total of 26 races and the favorites won at a big 54% rate.

Sunday
Some good chances to make money on Sunday but more favorites winning with 6 winning out of 10 races. There were 6 odds on runners on Sunday including both quarterhorse races and 3 of them won and the other 3 were 2nd. But there were some big numbers that ran into the minor awards pushing up the exotic pays.

The largest $2 win of the weekend was on Sunday in the 8th race with 16-1 Anna’s Iron Man paying $35.14. Coupled with the odds-on favorite 2nd and then a 39-1 3rd place and 14-1 4th paid $32.51 in the $1 exacta, the 50-cent trifecta returned $$181.25 and the 10-cent superfecta paid $169.28 or $1,692.80 for the $1 bet. The pick 3 paid $126.50.

There were a couple of big traditional $2 w-p-s bets that paid. In the 4th race 19-1 She’s Got the Power ran 2nd and paid $16.18 on the $2 place but well short of the $30.24 pay on July 6 with Sproston. We had another $13+ show pay this weekend one on Saturday and one on Sunday but both fell short of the high pay for the season. 39-1 Tapit at Midnight ran 3rd in the 8th and paid $13.40, the 3rd highest show pay of the season.

After the 10th race with a mix of winners that went from the 5th race on of 3-5, 5-1, 3-5, 16-1, 4-1 and 1-1 led to a missed pick 6 with 5 of 6 paying $47.20 and a carryover of $1,652. The pick 5 paid out $1,936.57 the pick 4 was good for $189.56 and the final pick 3 $148.14.

Saturday
A lot better chance to make money on Saturday than Friday night where favorites dominated winning 5 of the 7 races. On Saturday only 3 favorites won all day and all 3 were odds-on but the average win return was 5-1. In the $2 traditional bets the top $2 win was in the 9th with Wednesday at Shady paying $24.56 and Gypsy Gun in the 7th also reach $20 paying $21.86.

2 place bets topped $10 Distinctive Deb in the 2nd paying $10.36 and Wednesdat at Shady returning $10.68. We almost had a new $2 high season show pay by Klinkerbrick was just short at $13.66, 8 cents short of the $13.74 mark paid on June 21 to Smoken Shadow.

After the final race several big pays on the night starting with the 50-cent pick 5 of $1,839.15, the final pick 4 paid $401.49, the last pick 3 $110.01 and the pick 6 paid all 6 winners $872.62.
