(Auburn, WA) After 10,000 fans last Sunday for the Corgi races, this week was all about what Emerald Downs was built for, thoroughbred racing. The inaugural Hollywood Harbor Sprint Series was on Saturday with 2 heats and 15 runners and then on Sunday the Washington Legislative Stakes was followed by the Governor’s Stakes for our 1st double header of Stakes races of the year.

There were 19 other races as well from those 4 and the Diaper Derby was held after being postponed earlier this season due to the extreme heat. Sunday was a perfct day for the babies! Little Rosie Perez dominated the baby race as she was the only one to finish. The other all failed to start and were not happy about it.

We will begin with the Stakes races then follow that with the Sprint series coverage with race replays, photos and our coverage. Below that will be the shortened recaps of the other 19 races this week along with a heavy dose of the claims report thanks to the Sprint series and Photo Gallery. Let’s get to it!

Governor Stakes Race 7 $50,000

The Governor’s Stakes is the final local prep race for the Longacres Mile set Sunday, August 11. 9 runners were lined up and it was a well matched field as the bettors could not settle on one favorite and in the end the race itself could not determine a sole favorite as only the 3rd deadheat for a Stakes win in Emerald Downs history was declared in the end.

Arma d’Oro and Slew’s Tiz Whiz

There were 3 at 5-2 a 4-1 shot and the rest were 14-1 to 42-1. Papa’s Golden Boy and Alex Cruz were the 4-1 shot and went straight to the lead with 5-2 Neiman and Karlo Lopez right behind. 5-2 Arma d’Oro and Kevin Krigger stalked from the 3rd position and the other 5-2 Slew’s Tiz Whiz and Jose Zunino were 7th. Bettors were a little hesitant with Slew because the track was playing all day to the front speed and the inside part of the track so a closer with a big sweeping wide move would have to run against the bias of the track and likely was why he was at 5-2.

The pace set fractions of 22.13 and 44.20 and these times were doing the closers no favors. Turning for home Arma d’Oro stuck his head in front Neiman was 2nd and Papa’s Golden Boy 3rd. Papa was the 1st to throw in the towel and lugged out in the stretch to finish a tiring 7th. Neiman who was coming off a big win in the Budweiser did not have the kick he showed in that one and flattened oout to run 3rd.

It looked like Arma d’Oro and Krigger had clear sailing but Krigger knew he had to be ready for “that guy”. Zunino and Slew had worked their way from the 10 hole to the rail and turning for home it opened up wide and Slew kicked it into gear. Krigger told ESN, “I wasn’t sure where he was b ut felt he was going to come up the inside and all of a sudden out of the corner of my eye close to the finish line I could see someone coming and knew it was Slew.” Krigger said he just asked everything of Arma d’Oro and hoped he got there in time.

Well he did have enough to get there in time, sort of as he had to share the win with Slew’s Tiz Whiz as they hit the wire together for only the 3rd deadheat in Emerald Downs history and in a final time for the 6 1/2 furlongs of a blazing 1:14.91.

Zunino knew the race would be tough and knew he had to be near the rail and hope an opening was there. Zunino said, “when I saw the rail I thought I had a chance but at the end I did think Kevin and his horse got us. I didn’t realize how close it was and happy to share the win.

It was a double Winner’s Circle ceremony with #9 Arma d’Oro going first and finishing with #10 Slew’s Tiz Whiz. Arma d’Oro is owned by Rakoczy Racing and trained by Justin Evans. Evans also trains Neiman. Arma d’Oro has run in only 2 Stakes races finishing 4th in last year’s Longacres Mile and now winning his 2nd ever Stakes start. Arma d’Oro is now 7-4-6 from 32 lifetime starts. The owners recently claimed Arma in his 1st start of the season for $25,000. Arma d’Oro earned $18,750 to push his career earnings to $151,370.

Slew’s Tiz Whiz has now won the Governor Stakes 3 years in a row second only to Handy N Bold’s 4 straight wins from 1999-2003. Slew’s Tiz Whiz looks to be coming into the Milke that he won in 2022 at the top of his game and getting to go 1 mile is only going to help him. He’s expected to battle with last year’s Champion Five Star General in the 89th running of the classic.

Slew’s Tiz Whiz is owned by Slew’s Crew Racing and trained by Tom Wenzel. Slew’s Tiz Whiz is now 9-4-3 from 22 starts and also collected $18,750 to push his career earnings to just short of 300k at $298,457.

Neiman held oin for 3rd and Deshambeau with Isaias Enriquez up ran a legitimate 4th. The rest of the runners in order were Mongolian Memory, Muncey, Papa’s Golden Boy, Coastal Kid and Firewalker.

Washington Legislature Stakes Race 5 $50,000

After an even effort in the Hastings Stakes and Aloha Breeze’s 2024 debut finishing 4th the public did not lose confidence in the 4 year-old speedster in Sunday’s Washington Legislature Stakes as she went off as the odds-on 4-5 betting choice. In her debut she lost to Blazingbellablu who was the 2-1 morning line favorite and Aloha Breeze 5-2. But Bella was a late scratch on Sunday leaving the field at 6.

Aloha Breeze smiles for the camera

Whether Bella would have been able to change the outcome is impossible to know but we do know she would have had to had one of her best ever performances and jockey Carlos Montalvo quickly went to the lead building a 3 length advantage down the back stretch and surprisingly set a rather soft 22.22 quarter time in the 6 1/2 furlong run. Montalvo was dead still on Aloha who ran the half in 44.34 and had a 5 length lead and if the others didn’t know the race was for 2nd at this point they quickly learned as Aloha Breeze was let loose and she expanded the win to the largest win margin in stakes history to 6 3/4 lengths in a final time of 1:15.06.

Former stakes winner Daffodil Sweet making her 2nd start for the One Horse Will Do corporation ran a great race as well and 12-1 surged to take 2nd under Isaias Enriquez by 3/4’s of a length. 11-1 Our Lyla Grace with Leslie Mawing also ran hard to 3rd by a neck over 14-1 Jamies Inheritance and Allyssa Morales. Young Life Laura ran 5th in a bit of a dull effort after a couple of sharp runs and 2nd favorite 2-1 Tizzy Twister never challenged to take last.

Aloha Breeze is owned by George Todaro and trained by Tom Wenzel. Aloha Breeze is now 6-2-0 from 10 lifetime starts and picked up the $27,500 winner’s share of the purse to expand her bank account to $167,510.

Run Snappy w/ Kevin Krigger

There were 16 entered with 8 in each heat but a late scratch of Midnight Fury on Saturday reduced the 1st field to 7. The odds-on choice for the 1st heat was Run Snappy and Kevin Krigger up. After Run Snappy the betting public was not really sold on a single 2nd favorite with 4 horses between 4-1 and 7-1 and two 17-1 shots.

When the gates opened at 5 1/2-furongs for this group of $8,000 claimers 7-1 Party Foul popped out in 1st but Run Snappy was right there and Krigger wasted little time taking the lead and putting a 2 length margin on the rest of the pack as they entered the stretch running the 1/4 in 21.60 and the half 44.27. Those times have been too fast for this track lately an d 6-1 Mirror Image with Silvio Amador began making his move after stalking the pace.

Inside the 16th pole Mirror Image was picking up ground but ran out of distance a 1/2 length short and Run Snappy got the win in a time of 1:03.19. 3rd place Summanus and Carlos Montalvo at 17-1 also made a good run about 2 lengths behind but 6 in front of the rest of the field. 4-1 Torpedo Away and Karlo Lopez ended up 4th. Party Foul finished 5th followed by Blaze of Dreams and I’m Corfu.

Run Snappy runs for Bryon Seymore and trained by Justin Evans and earned $12,540 for winning heat 1. Run Snappy is now 4-1-2 from 13 starts and pushed his career bankroll to $79,725.

Heat 2, Race 7

Mr Fireball w/ Javier Matias

The field of 8 stayed intact for the 2nd heat of the inaugural Hollywood Harbor Sprint Series and this one also well matched with Taino House and Luis Reyes getting bet down as the 3-2 favorite. Mr Fireball was the 2nd choice at just a hair under 3-1 with Javier Matias. Matias and Mr Fireball broke well and settled in 4th early in the 5 1/2 furlongs while 8-1 Boss of Themoss went to the lead with 5-1 Uncle Leon 2nd and 24-1 Quiet Charm 3rd. Taino House and March On Linch  at 16-1 with Neptali Ortiz were midpack.

Times were quick of 21.71 and 44.69 and took it’s toll on Boss of Themoss and Quiet Charm who both faded leaving the door open and 1st run to Uncle Leon with Allyssa Morales and Mr Fireball. Those 2 would go toe-to-toe for the length of the stretch and Mr Fireball squeezed out the neck win in a final time of 1:03.05. The duo were clear a length to 3rd place Taino House and 4 lengths back March On Linch got up for 4th by a neck over the tiring Quiet Charm.

Mr Fireball runs for John Coonan and trained by Rosie Simkins and is a Washington bred by Peppered Cat out of Sheen Falls by Officer and was bred by the owner John Coonan. Mr Fireball is now 5-1-3 from 16 lifetime starts and collected  the $12,540 winner’s check to push his earnings to $63,471.
