(Auburn, WA) A new added bonus sprint series begins on Saturday, July 20 that boosts the purses for those entering these special races. A few years ago there was a sponsored marathon series but there just isn’t enough horses that go long at Emerald Downs so the organizers behind this effort switched to a sprint series which there are plenty eligible to run in.
The group named the series the “Hollywood Harbor” sprint series in honor of the Hollywood Harbor a Washington bred who stormed into his career in 2009 for the One Horse Will Do Corporation and Chris Stenslie who was part owner and trainer. Hollywood Harbor was bred by the Bar C Ranch and is by Harbor the Gold out of Miss Slewette by Slewdledo.
Hollywood Harbor ran 2nd at 23-1 in his debut as a 2-year-old. Harbor would then start in the NW Stallion Stakes and win then added the Premio Esmeralda Stakes and capped it with the WTBA Lads Stakes. Hollywood Harbor would be named Emerald Downs 2 year-old male of the year for 2009.
In his 13 lifetime starts all but 1 were run at Emerald Downs with the lone exception a run in the Harry Hensen Stakes at Hollywood Park on the turf which was the one time Hollywood Harbor ran out of the money in his lifetime. His Emerald Downs record was 12 starts 7-3-2 and career earnings of $137,202.
Jose Zunino rode Hollywood Harbor in 11 of his 12 starts and the only time did not ride was in the Lads Stakes where Debbie Hoonan filled in and very capably won. Zunino had been caught out of town and couldn’t get back in time to ride him the Lads.
Zunino was aboard Hollywood on April 22, 2012 when they set a new North American and World record for 5 1/2 furlongs at Emerald Downs with a time of 1:00.87. A record that still stands today as the top North American time.
The friends of Hollywood Harbor have raised more than $15,000 to add to the purses and had pledged more if entries raise to a level of having to run multiple heats. That has indeed occurred with the 1st round set for Saturday and there will be 2 heats of 8 runners competing at 5 1/2 furlongs and a final purse is now at $22,000 for each heat.
Owners had to pay a $100 entry fee that all goes to the purse pool of the final leg. The 1st round is for $8,000 claimers. Only horses entered this week can advance to round 2 set for Saturday, August 3. The purse for the 2nd leg is estimated to be $25,000 and the claiming price goes to $10,000.
The final heat is set for Saturday, August 24 and will be limited to only those who have competed in the 1st two rounds and will be a starter allowance. The Championship heat will be run at 6 furlongs and the purse is estimated to be near $26,000.
A bonus of $250 will be paid to Washington breds who win in the 1st two rounds and $500 in the final. Horses claimed in the 1st leg remain eligible to run in the 2nd round under the new connections and the same is true for runners tagged in the 2nd round to run in the finale.
Here are the 16 entries for round 1, 2 races and 8 starters in each race.
