It was Corgi Championship day with more than 100 Corgi’s set to make their run on Sunday. Fields of 12 lined up for 5 qualifying heats after the 2nd thoroughbred race and then 4 more qualifying heats for a total of 9 were run after the 3rd race. The winners earned their way to the Championship heat with last year’s champion for a field of 10 and was run after the 5th race.
As the racing began close finishes were the theme of the day in the 2024 Corgi World Championship Races presented by Amazon benefiting The Alzheimer’s Association.
After nine qualifying heats and last year’s winner Milo Benz owned by Kaela Belen and Nick Pecache of Puyallup made for an exciting championship heat for the 10-Corgi affair.
Milo Bigglesworth owned by Amy Williams & B. J. Williams of Rice Lake, WI, raced to the lead from the get go and dashed to the wire winning by 3 lengths over Captain of Pacifica, CA. Murray of Langley, WA checked in a spirited third.
Milo Bigglesworth and his connections were presented with the World Championship Trophy which they will take back to their home in Wisconsin. ESPN was on hand for the 3rd year and will be airing the corgi races sometime in August on ESPN the Ocho. Date and time have not yet been announced.
