Boys Soccer: WF West stays unbeaten on huge Keeper effort

(Chehalis, WA) The Shelton Highclimbers came in at 1-5 in EVCO league play and WF West was undefeated. However, the first time these two teams met the Highclimbers gave the Bearcats all they wanted losing 3-2. The second time around was no different.

The Bearcats did strike first on what looked like a pretty routine play but playing on natural grass sometimes gives you offs bounces and ricochets that you don’t expect and in the 5th minute the Cats sent a shot right at Highclimber keeper Jose Morales Sanchez and at the last moment it hopped to his right, over his shoulder and dribbled in for the score.

Morales Sanchez responded with a huge save in the 35th and finished 5 saves in the 1st half and 8 for the game. If Shelton had made a run and come back to win our Pacific NW Takin’ it to the House play of the game would have been that save to keep the score 1-0 going into halftime as Morales Sanchez blnked the Cats in the 2nd half.

WF West’s offense seemed to be a bit off on this night but their defense more than made up for it with a strong backline with Gabe Burger, Colin Bradley and Devin Canfield ande keeper Josh Madrigal in the 1st half. But it was 2nd half keeper Cayden Page that put on a literal clinic in goal keeping that saved and won the game for the Bearcats. Highlighted with a one-on-one showdown with Shelton’s Luis Olivas and Page kicked saved it like a hockey goalie in a spectacular play to preserve the 1-0 win.

Page went from having the play of the game to being named our Thorbeckes MVP. The Better Homes and Garden Realty, Summit Funding and Country Insurance play of the game went to Moi Sanchez-Hernandez for the lone score of the match.

WF West remains undefeated in league play at 7-0 and are 8-1 overall. The Bearcats played their last league home game of the season and begin a challenging road schedule on at Aberdeen on Friday against the Bobcats that took them to a shoot-out in their first match-up. Shelton drops to 1-6 in league play and 2-6-1 overall and will play next Tuesday when they host Centralia.
