Featured Game Story
Black Hills 13 20 40 54
Shelton 8 24 34 15
(Tumwater, WA) The first time these 2 teams met in early December the Shelton Highclimbers rolled over an overmatched Black Hills Wolves squad by 18. That was fresh off a loss to 1A Tenino who played with just 2 starters. Black Hills would then rack up losses to WF West, Bremerton and 1A Montesano with 1 win in between against 2B North Beach. It was not looking like a very good season was coming together for the Wolves.
But then the team with 2 Senior starters a couple of sophomores and a freshman it took time for each to learn their roles and where everyone fits working together. The switch then flipped and they reeled off 6 straight wins coming into Thursday night’s game.
The Highclimbers have traveled a similar path opoening the season 0-5 then winning 7 of 8 including 6 in a row coming into the re-match at Black Hills. Shelton has had a couple of games that had to be re-scheduled and is stacking up some games over the next few weeks which really meant a win and a sweep over Black Hills would have been huge.
Shelton began the game with the 1st bucket but Black Hills ran off 9 unanswered and finished with a 13-8 lead after the 1st quarter. Shelton reversed course in the 2nd putting up their best offensive quarter of the gme with 16 and taking a 24-20 lead into the break holding Black Hils to just 7 points. Dante Cruz led the 2nd quarter scoring burst with 6 of the 16 for Shelton.
The Wolves came out with pressure defense in the 2nd half which caught the Highclimbers a bit off guard as Black Hills reeled off 6 quick points to re-take the lead. Leading the charge was Jack Ellison who had a career night knocking down 12 of his 30 points for the game. The Wolves doubled their halftime score in the 3rd going from 20 to 40 and held Shelton to 10 leading 40-34 after 3.
In the 4th quarter the Wolves kept up the pressure and Ellison kept hitting inside with a ton of assists coming from Simon Nysted who would drive the lane and dish to Ellison time and again. The Wolves would build a double digit lead with less than 3 minutes to play when the Highclimbers made one last run with Weetly Cordova scoring 11 of his 23 points in the 2nd half including a pair of 3’s late. But time was not on their side and their comeback ended 5 short and the Wolves racked up their 7th straight win.
Black Hills is now 6-2 in EVCO 2A league play and 10-6 overall and will host WF West next Wednesday. Shelton drops to 4-2 in league play and 7-7 on the season. The Highclimbers now have a tough home and home series next Monday and Tuesday, hosting Tumwater on Monday and at the T-Birds on Tuesday making up one of their canceled games. They will wrap up their week with a game against Rochester next Friday.
The Thorbeckes MVP of the game was Jack Ellison with 30 points.
