Let’s take a look at the 1B standing at the halfway point of the season. Last year Liberty Bell had a Cinderella season coming into the playoffs as the 5-seed and coming away with the Championship for the first time in school history. Liberty Bell Beat Neah Bay 50-12 in the title game with Liberty Christian and Odessa rounding out last seasons final 4.
Let’s take a look at the likely contenders at this point of the season. We take a look at the current standings and the RPI but remember the RPI is very early and is meant to be a full season measurement. We also have listed every league and their current standings below. Many leagues also crossover with each other to share their allocations to the state tournament and allow more schools to have a chance to qualify. We do not know how each league is set up so we are looking at all leagues with a general overview. Let’s get started!
We will start with the Central Washington 1B League. Moses Lake Christian-Covenant Christian leads the league with a 5-0 overall record and 4-0 in league play and ranked 11 in the early RPI. Last year Entiat won the league but didn’t make it to the round of 12. Waterville-Mansfield is the only other team in the top 20 in the RPI currently sitting in 18th.
Up next is the Costal 1B lead by the 4-0 Lake Quinault who are currently ranked 15th in the RPI. The Elks are looking to get back to the playoffs for the first time since the 2009 football season.
The Columbia Valley League is up next and they have two contenders to make deep runs at a state title in Naselle (5-0) and Mossyrock (3-1). Last year the Comets lost a heart breaker 76-74 to number 1 ranked Odessa while the Viking lost to eventual champions Liberty Bell. Both of those loses came in the quarterfinals. Mossyrock and Naselle have a big regular season matchup coming up on October 13th.
Northeast 1B Division A is next and this league is stacked in the early RPI with #3 Wellpinit, #4 Wilbur-Creston-Keller, #14 Almira-Coulee-Hartline and #10 Odessa. Last year ACH lost in the opening round to Naselle, Wellpinit lost to Neah Bay in the quarters, and Odessa was the number 1 team all season before being upset by Liberty Bell in the Semis. This year Wellpinit is 4-0 with a big win over Odessa. Wilbur-Creston-Keller is 5-0 also has a big win over Odessa but closes the season with Wellpinit and ACH. Almira-Coulee-Hartline is 4-1 on the year losing to defending champ Liberty Bell 64-34 already and having the other 3 teams in the league left to play, the Warriors destiny is in their own hands. Odessa is 3-2 with losses to W-C-K and Wellpinit they have to hope that someone stumbles down the stretch to have a shot at post season play.
Northeast 1B Division B has 3 teams in the RPI top 20 with #6 Curlew #12 Republic and #19 Cusick. The Curlew Cougars are 4-0 on the year and have a big win over Republic. Republic is 4-1 with their lone loss to Curlew the Tigers are poised to stay on top of the standings. Cusick has some work to do with losses to Odessa and Republic on the year it might be a little too late for the Panthers to make a late run at the playoffs.
The SeaTac League is having a down year with Quilcene and Evergreen Lutheran the only teams to notch a win this season. the league is looking to regroup and make a strong push next year. (See more below)
The Southeast 1B has the current RPI #1 in Liberty Christian and #12 DeSales. These 2 met in the quarters last year with Liberty Christian coming away with the 84-50 win before the fell to Neah Bay 82-24 in their next game. The Patriots are looking to take that #1 ranking all the way to their 3rd title game in school history where they are 1-1 winning it all in 2012 and runner up in 2014.
In the North Olympic league regular play-off staple Neah Bay had another strong run to the Championship game but were overwhelmed by Liberty Bell in the title tilt. Neah Bay is currently 3-2 on the season and has clicked in as the #17 RPI. Don’t sleep on N-B they know how to get to the end.
We know there are some schools not included in the standings much of the Sea-Tac league is not listed at this time but for example according to the RPI’s NW Christian (Lacey) is 4-0 and the RPI #5. So we can’t give a full look at a few of these leagues without seeing where everyone is at this time.
Also remember there is always a lot of hoot and hollerin’ about the RPI standings but these standings are meant to be a season long measurement so look for big changes and swings still to come, this is where they are right now based on the criteria fed into the computers that spit out the rankings.
Looks to us like there is a lot to be excited about for the stretch run of the football season so buckle up and enjoy the ride!
*Note the standings are as presented there may be some mistakes but the standings are part of the WIAA’s effort to launch a statewide standings, schedules and results website. It was launched this last summer and they continue to work on it but there are some mistakes that we have noticed and have passed on to the WIAA. Overall, it is a huge step in the right direction of trying to once and for collect all the basic information on one site.
