Mariners 8, Marlins 1
(Seattle, WA) Returning home after a really rough road trip, the Seattle Mariners quickly gave the fans a reason to comeback out to T-Mobile Park on Monday night. The offense exploded for a big night to finally back a tremendous outing from one of their starters. Bryce Miller was the benefactor of the offense and he put on a great performance, allowing just one hit to the Miami Marlins. All that added up toa great start to the short homestand as Seattle took game one from Miami 8-1.
Seattle started the offensive output in the bottom of the 1st. J.P Crawford led off with a double that looked like it would be wasted as he remained on second base with two outs. Miami’s starting pitcher, Jesús Luzardo tried to pickoff Crawford, but threw the ball into center field, allowing Crawford to move up to third. Teoscar Hernandez would then put Seattle on the board with a rocket into left field for his eighth double of the season, scoring Crawford to make it 1-0. That looked to be all for the M’s as Eugenio Suarez hit a fly ball to left, but Bryan De La Cruz couldn’t handle it, dropping the would be third out and allowing Hernandez to score on an E7 making it 2-0 Seattle.
The game was then blown open in the bottom of the 2nd. With two outs and runners on the corners, Julio Rodriguez sent a liner into right field for a base hit. Tom Murphy scored off of his eighth double, extending the lead to 3-0. Ty France would deliver the big haymaker. A slider didn’t get low enough in the zone and France hammered it into the bullpen in left field for a three-run shot. France’s sixth home run of the year made it 6-0 Seattle still early in the game.
The next run, and Miami’s only hit, came in the top of the 5th. Nick Fortes took a fastball at the top of the zone and sent it into the left field bleachers for his fourth homer of the year to put Miami on the board making it 6-1. The M’s got that run right back in the bottom of the inning. Eugenio Suarez drove one deep to right center that just kept carrying, well over the wall for a solo shot. Geno’s seventh of the year extended the lead back out to 7-1.
Tom Murphy joined the home run festivities to put the finishing touches on the win. Murphy hit what looked like at best a double to center field, but once again the ball just kept carrying. Murphy instead got his second long ball of the season to make it 8-1.
The eight runs were more than enough for the pitching staff on Monday night. Bryce Miller still didn’t have his best stuff, but he was much better than his last two outings. Miller allowed just the one hit and three walks in his six innings of work to snap his rough stretch after getting shelled by the Yankees and Rangers. After that, Ty Adcock made his MLB debut after Penn Murfee was placed on the IL and Adcock looked sharp. The rookie pitched two innings and only allowed one Marlin to reach base and it was on an error by Suarez. Gabe Speier finished off the strong pitching performance with a 1-2-3 9th inning to secure the 9-1 win for the Mariners.
Seattle (32-33) will now try to secure their first series win since May 26th-28th on Tuesday night in game two with the Marlins. The M’s will go with George Kirby (5-5, 3.50 ERA) who will look to fix some location issues that cost him his last time out in San Diego. Miami (37-30) will start Edward Cabrera (5-4, 4.29 ERA) who is fifth in all of baseball in walks allowed, but has been much better about giving out free passes in his two June starts.
