Yankees 10, Mariners 2
(Seattle, WA) A stretch of clunkers continued for Seattle Mariner starting pitching on Tuesday night in game two of a three-game series with the New York Yankees. This time, Logan Gilbert struggled in a short outing with a high pitch count and the game felt out of reach early as the M’s struggled to string together hits. After a brutal nine innings, the M’s dropped another game to the bad guys by a final score of 10-2.
A three-run 1st inning took the air out of the T-Mobile Park crowd immediately. An error by Eugenio Suarez loaded the bases for the Yankees with one out instead of being an inning-ending double play. Isiah Kiner-Falefa made Seattle pay for that error with a two-run single to center to score Gleyber Torres and Aaron Judge to give New York a 2-0 lead. Jake Bauers added a warning track fly out to score DJ LeMahieu to make it 3-0 before the M’s even picked up a bat.
New York added four more runs before Seattle got on the board. Anthony Volpe crushed a three-run home run for his eight homer of his rookie year in the top of the 3rd to make it 6-0. Volpe would not be the only Yankee to record a home run in this game. One inning later, Greg Allen hit his first home run as a Yankee to extend that lead out to 7-0.
The Mariners then gave the crowd a glimmer of hope. Two batters after a leadoff walk by Sam Haggerty, he got to show of his impressive speed. Ty France lined a double down into the left field corner for his 16th double of the season. Haggerty had more than enough speed to score all the way from first to put Seattle on the board. Two batters after France, Teoscar Hernandez lined one into right field and despite Aaron Judge’s attempt to rob Hernandez of a base hit, this one would find the grass and kick away from Judge. France scored as Teo trotted to second with his seventh double of the season. There was still work to be done, but Seattle had gotten on the board still trailing 7-2.
New York dealt the final blows from there. Aaron Judge smacked his 18th home run of the season to make it 8-2 in the 8th. Another two-run single by Kiner-Falefa put the finishing touches on another double digit day for the Yankees. Seattle was put out of their misery in the bottom of the 9th as they watched the Yankees celebrate another blowout win 10-2.
Seattle (28-27) is now desperate for a win to avoid the sweep on Wednesday at 6:40pm. A pitcher coming off his clunker in George Kirby (5-4, 3.43 ERA) will try to cool off a Yankees lineup that has scored double figures in three straight games. Clarke Schmidt (2-5, 5.58 ERA) goes for the Yankees as he looks to continue to lower his ERA after back-to-back solid outings against Cincinnati and Baltimore.
