Curtis 75, Sumner 43
(Sumner, WA)
The Sumner Spartans were coming off a loss at Olympia where they didn’t score a single point in the 1st quarter, but against Curtis they took a 2-0 lead within the 1st minute, but the defending 4A state champions answered with a 14-0 run to help the Vikings to a 75-43 road win.
Junior star Zoom Diallo had his way in the paint, as the guard had 26 points and went 7-9 from the free throw stripe, and Josiah Johnson was excellent too with 16 points that included two highlight reel slam dunks. Cooper Hartley had a strong game for Sumner as the Sophomore forward lead the Spartans with 11 points off the bench.
Though the score appears to be lopsided in favor of Curtis, Sumner found some success, particularly in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. After trailing 18-5 after the 1st quarter, the Spartans doubled up their point total with 13 2nd quarter points and were able to cut the deficit to single digits before a Curtis run pushed the lead to 34-16 at the half.
The 3rd quarter was competitive as well as Sumner continued to hit shots from the outside, but Curtis dominated the 4th quarter outscoring Sumner 20-9 to pull away. Next up for Curtis is a home contest against Olympia on Saturday night at 7, while Sumner will aim to end a 2-game losing streak to start the new year when they host rival Puyallup at 7 on Saturday.
