Slow pitch softball returned to the WIAA in 2019 where Central Valley hoised hardware. In 2022, Chiawana raised the 4A championship trophy. It made them back-to-back state champions. The 2020 tournament belonged to COVID.
The Riverhawks defeated the Central Valley Bears 17-2 for the trophy. While the teams were tied at 2 in the early goings on the game, it only took a couple innings for the Chiawana bats to heat up.
“Super excited,” said head coach Brian Thomas. “I think it’s a continuation for me as a coach. We’ve tried to build a program where our girls have fun and when they’re having fun, they are playing their best.”
Thomas was also named MCC Coach of the Year while 7 Riverhawk players made 1st Team All-Conference with another two named to 2nd Team. From top to bottom, Chiawana had a complete team and that showed in the state finals.
“You saw a little of everything we’re capable of,” said Thomas. “We don’t have anyone that thinks they’re a superstar. They play together.”
About 80-90% of the team will compete in WIAA fastpitch softball in the spring.
